Nico Rosberg's Review of the 2014 Belgian Grand Prix

A rollercoaster weekend for Nico Rosberg at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps saw his emphatic pole position neutralised by an eventful race - culminating in a tough recovery drive to second place.

In his latest video blog, Nico reflects on a controversial Sunday in Belgium:
"We had in important discussion after the race. The good thing is we have great leadership in the team - that is really important in such situations and I'm confident we'll get back to our way."

Spa Mistreatment

Early baths for both our boys in Spa
Pastor Maldonado and Romain Grosjean were both forced to retire from today’s Belgian Grand Prix. Pastor was ordered to make an early retirement as a result of suspected exhaust failure, whilst Romain’s race was comprised due to damage on track.
Though it wasn’t the result the Lotus F1 Team was hoping for, Romain’s E22 had a strong race at Spa, delivering impressive pace on the medium compound tyres despite the loss of downforce. [Read More!]

2014 Belgian Grand Prix – Race

Spa-Francorchamps, August 24, 2014 – Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo has won his second consecutive grand prix, from fifth on the grid in Belgium. BELGIAN GP – ROLES REVERSED

Marco Mattiacci: “At the end of a weekend in which the topic of young drivers was very much in the news, I want to start by congratulating Raffaele Marciello on his first GP2 win and Jules Bianchi for his strong showing in yesterday’s qualifying. As for the race, we are very pleased for Kimi: today, he came close to the podium and scored his best result of the season, a result which sees us maintain third place in the Constructors’ classification. Unfortunately, Fernando’s race was compromised by a problem at the start. Without that, I firmly believe the podium was within his reach. We know we have missed out on a great opportunity, but we will learn from this incident to pay obsessive attention to our procedures, as we strive to improve reliability. The next race will be complicated because top speed is a strong point of the Mercedes-powered teams. We will try and defend with every means available, because the efforts of the team in terms of improving the car are producing encouraging signs.” [Read More!]

BELGIAN GP – RACE

Sunday 24 August 2014
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: WINNER! Start Position: 5th
“You know everyone was saying we didn’t really have a chance around here, but I think we had some really good pace today and surprised ourselves. It feels a bit surreal, but another win is very cool, very cool. It was difficult staying out at the end of the race. When you’re the leader as well you always feel like you’re the most vulnerable when it comes to a pit stop or not, but Simon my engineer came on the radio and said I think it’s 11 laps left, can these tyres get to the end? And I said I think I can keep more or less this pace, and we were able to, and then on the last lap I found a couple more tenths, so I was having a bit of fun then! There’s been a lot of good things about the win today, obviously the last two came from a more aggressive style of race, but today was more calculated and it was nice to win under different circumstances.” [Read More!]

Spa-Francorchamps, August 22, 2014 – The Formula One season resumed at Spa-Francorchamps in cool conditions: a common feature of the legendary seven-kilometre venue in the foothill of the Ardennes. Track temperatures climbed to just 30 degrees centigrade in the afternoon, with ambient temperatures hovering around 18 degrees centigrade.

Mercedes were first and second in both free practice sessions, with Nico Rosberg fastest in the morning on the P Zero White medium tyre, and Lewis Hamilton fastest in the afternoon on the P Zero Yellow soft. [Read More!]

BELGIAN GP – THE CHALLENGE OF THE ARDENNES

Fernando Alonso: “Compared to the other race weekends, the story is a bit different here, because Spa is a high speed circuit and, after a month off, getting back to racing at a fantastic track like this is a real pleasure. It was nice to be able to run in the dry today. The weather is always changeable here and in fact, the possibility of rain is forecast for tomorrow, therefore, as usual, we will ensure we are ready for whatever comes our way. At this track and at Monza, engine performance counts for a lot. We know there is no magic solution but we will nevertheless try to optimise everything. The car behaved as we expected from our simulations and that is definitely something positive.” [Read More!]

BELGIAN GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

22 August 2014
DANIEL RICCIARDO
First Practice Session: Position: 9, Best Time: 1:52.972, Laps: 19
Second Practice Session: Position: 8, Best Time: 1:50.977, Laps: 16
“I think we knew it would be difficult to break away from the mid field here - we see Force India, McLaren and Toro Rosso and a few of the others are strong. Hopefully tomorrow we can find a bit more speed and get ahead of them. Our long run is better than our short run pace, so that's not bad, if we have a good race car then Sundays are always more fun. If the track keeps rubbering in, and we'll see what the weather does tomorrow, then it should come a bit more into our hands. Eau rouge is still flat out, but you have to concentrate a bit more, it's not a Sunday drive through there anymore!” [Read More!]

2014 BELGIAN GRAND PRIX – FREE PRACTICE

“With our low-downforce set-up, Eau Rouge is, er, interesting: you’ve got oversteer at more than 300km/h!”
Spa-Francorchamps, Friday August 22
Today was a satisfactory first day at Spa for the McLaren team, both Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen relishing the challenge of tackling Formula 1’s return to one of the most daunting and most challenging racetracks on the calendar.
As always, FP1 and FP2 were test sessions as much as anything else – but, even so, in running through all the team’s planned programmes, Jenson and Kevin both managed to make good progress in terms of set-up development. [Read More!]

Belgian Grand Prix Practice

22.08.14
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We managed to complete most of the work we needed to today and overall this has been a positive practice for us. Typically Spa brings a few challenges for teams with the high speeds we run at this track, but the drivers and their crew did a very good job in diligently working their way through the schedules. We focused on aero work this morning and we then moved on to tyre tests on low and high fuel levels, with encouraging results. The objective is to remain fighting for podiums in the second half of the season and from today’s running it looks like we are still in the mix. We have a lot of data to work through and decisions to make tonight, and hopefully we can continue to progress the set-up of the car so that we peak on Sunday. [Read More!]

Shell Belgian Grand Prix – Practice – Friday, 22.08.2014

Weather: overcast and dry, 13-17°C air, 17-33°C track
The first practice day for the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps didn’t go exactly according to plan for the Sauber F1 Team. In the morning, the power unit in Giedo van der Garde’s car didn’t deliver the maximum power output, and in the afternoon the failing of the Energy Recovery System (MGUK) brought Esteban Gutiérrez‘ practice session to an end after just a few laps. Meanwhile Adrian Sutil was quite happy with the performance of his car. [Read More!]

BELGIAN GRAND PRIXVIEW 2014

August 19, 2014
While our team is travelling to Belgium, here our Grand Prixview for you:
Nearly a month has passed since the last Grand Prix in Hungary and in that time, we have had the compulsory two week factory shutdown, as stipulated in the Sporting Regulations. It provided a well deserved break for everyone in the team to enjoy some holiday time with family and friends. But for motor racing fans, a month without a Grand Prix is far too long, so the entire Scuderia Toro Rosso crew is looking forward to this weekend's return to racing, all the more so as it takes place at one of the most challenging tracks on the calendar, Spa‑Francorchamps. It might be half the length it used to be, but crammed into its seven odd kilometres are bits of track that capture the essence of what the old circuit must have been liked to drive. But don't take our word for it, because you can still drive on the 'old' bits as they are still public roads, going through legendary and scary corners like Burnenville and the most feared section of all, especially if it was raining, the Masta kink. Give it a go, it's one of the best things you can do during the Formula One season, before tackling some famously strong Belgian beer, brewed by Monks who clearly had a sense of humour. (Take a taxi home afterwards) [Read More!]

AHEAD OF THE BELGIAN GRAND PRIX

Daniel Ricciardo
Above all, Spa is a racing circuit - one that really encourages exciting wheel-to-wheel action. That said, F1 has changed over the years and whereas Eau Rouge and Blanchimont were once the stand-out sections, now it’s probably the Pouhon downhill left-hander at Turns 10 and 11. That’s seriously, seriously fast – and probably a good place to watch the race from for anyone prepared for a bit of a hike through the Ardennes. Of course, given the Belgium Grand Prix draws in all the petrolheads, everyone’s perfectly happy to slog through the woods to find the best view. You bump into people who’ve been going to the race for five decades. And if you ever go into a pub or restaurant in one of the villages around the circuit, chances are you’ll see pictures on the wall of great drivers from back in the day, standing where you are and doing what you’re doing. It’s great stuff. [Read More!]

2014 Belgian Grand Prix – preview

Formula 1 returns to action this weekend at one of the world’s most challenging circuits. Spa-Francorchamps, situated deep in Belgium’s Ardennes forest, is the ultimate high-speed test of man and machine; it’s one of the highlights of the season.

Spa-Francorchamps facts & stats
Spa-Francorchamps has been synonymous with Formula 1 for more than 60 years. The track featured in the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship in 1950, but its current design bears little resemblance to the original 14km layout. The modern track is much shorter (7.004km) and safer, but it’s still breathtakingly quick: the average speed is 230km/h. [Read More!]

Belgian Grand Prix Preview: Spa, 21-24 August 2014

Milan, August 18, 2014 – The Formula One season resumes after a three-week break for one of the most eagerly-anticipated races of the year: Spa-Francorchamps, where the P Zero White medium tyres and P Zero Yellow soft tyres have been nominated, a softer choice compared to last year, to promote different strategies. At just over seven kilometres in length, Spa is the longest lap of the year, while its mixture of fast straights, flat-out corners, abrasive asphalt and swooping elevations put maximum strain on the tyres. As if that were not enough, variable weather – with frequent heavy rainstorms – are a common feature of this picturesque circuit, located in the Ardennes Mountains. All of this can lead to a high incidence of safety cars, so the ability to react fast, as well as the insight to formulate an effective strategy, is vital. Often it can be raining on one part of the circuit but completely dry at another part, meaning that the versatility of cars, tyres and drivers is tested to the limit as well. [Read More!]

BELGIAN GRAND PRIX - RACE PREVIEW

FRIDAY 22 – SUNDAY 24 AUGUST
SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, BELGIUM
RACE 12 OF 19

One of the classic Formula One venues, Spa-Francorchamps is loved and respected in equal measure by the drivers. It’s the longest track on the calendar and within its 7kms are several of the most challenging corners in the world. Pouhon and Blanchimont are both fast and taxing left-handers, but Eau Rouge remains the corner that’s recognised by racing fans the world over. In dry conditions the cars enter Eau Rouge at 180mph and they experience both lateral and longitudinal g-forces as they pass through the compression at the bottom of the hill, while flicking their cars through the left-right-left sequence. With the 2014 technical regulations limiting downforce at the rear of the cars this year, there’s every chance that it won’t be ‘easy-flat’, which will test the drivers’ skill and bravery to the limit. Vijay’s Vision
Vijay Mallya looks ahead to the second half of the season.

Vijay, three weeks on from Budapest, has the team regrouped following a tough race?
“Until Hungary we had scored points in every race, so I guess we were due to have an unlucky weekend at some stage. I just hope that’s our bad luck over and done with. At the same time there was a huge opportunity to come away with some significant points so it was a missed opportunity. Both drivers came to me and apologised. Checo was unlucky: the same thing happened to Vettel at the same corner and he got away with it.” [Read More!]
