Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka, 27 September 2015

Maurizio Arrivabene: “You’re never completely happy when you don’t win the race, but I think this result should not be compared with what we had achieved in Singapore one week ago. We’d rather compare this track to Silverstone, because it has similar characteristics. And if we look back at the British Grand Prix, at the gap that we had there to our main rivals, we can see that today we have been closer. And this means that there has been a major development in all areas, starting from our power unit. As for the strategy, we were in doubt as to shortcut the Mercedes or pit after them; but there were not many data available from practice, due to the rain on Friday, so making certain choices would have meant a huge risk for the life of the tires.” [Read More!]

Suzuka International Racing Course, Sunday 27 September

The 2015 Japanese Grand Prix was a disappointing home race for the McLaren-Honda team.

Despite starting from 12th (Fernando Alonso) and 14th (Jenson Button) on the grid, and taking advantage of a couple of first-lap incidents to nick a few extra places, neither driver was able to hold back the stream of faster cars behind them. [Read More!]

“It was pretty boring for me out there this afternoon, because a combination of circumstances meant I had to just sit back and was unable to attack. I had a completely new car, so that wasn’t so easy. We had difficulties with the tyres, the brakes and the overtake button, which made life complicated. In the end, I did manage to overtake some people, but it wasn’t great. It’s frustrating and annoying, but there was nothing I could do. Battling for P13 does not give you much satisfaction. But a big thank you to the team, they had a lot of work to do on Saturday night to get the car ready for the race.” [Read More!]

2015 Japanese Grand Prix FP3 and Qualifying Report

"The race will be tough for everyone tomorrow"

Suzuka International Racing Course, Saturday 26 September

Fernando Alonso and Jenson Button will start 14th and 16th respectively for tomorrow’s Japanese Grand Prix.

Jenson was eliminated at the end of Q1, when a yellow-flag period meant he was unable to better his banker time set at the beginning of the session. That first lap had also been compromised after the car had not been switched to the optimal engine mode, which lost Jenson time. [Read More!]

Japanese Grand Prix - Suzuka, 26 September 2015

Kimi Raikkonen: “The result of this qualifying is a bit disappointing, as we had a good speed all the way through and the behavior of the car was pretty good. The first two qualifying laps went well, bu my first run in Q3 was average, my tires did not have the right grip. It’s a bit disappointing not having been able to run my second lap: I’m sure we could have improved, but the red flag stopped the session. For the race tomorrow it’s a bit unknown, because nobody had the time to run in dry conditions and do long runs, but I think we should be fine. Hopefully we have done all things correctly so that we can gain some positions. It’s going to be a long race, starting behind other cars, but we’ll try to make a good start and then go from there.” [Read More!]

“It’s disappointing to be out in Q2, it was definitely a day to get into the top ten easily. Unfortunately, during my second Q2 run, we picked-up some vibrations on the front tyres, which meant that I couldn’t improve my time and missed out in getting into Q3. It’s been difficult to adapt to this track in the dry. I had just 20 laps to learn the circuit and today it’s all been a build-up until Q2, when I finally felt totally comfortable and knew exactly what lines to take. I was ready to get into Q3 and it was a big shame not to make it in the end. I was starting to have great fun! For tomorrow our objective is to finish in the points again. I have a set of new Option tyres available, so that should help a bit, and I also have a good car so I’m convinced we can have a great race.” [Read More!]

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 7, (3rd Practice – 3, 1:34.497)
“Firstly, the most important thing is that Dany is okay. I haven’t seen a replay; I only saw the car when I passed it but the team was on the radio to let me know he was fine. As for today’s session, in general it went reasonably well. I don’t think seventh shows how happy I was with the car, because I thought we were on for a top five, but we’re still in a good place for tomorrow. We’re also in a good place for tyre wear, so we’ll see what happens. Strategy is open for the race, it’s possible to do one stop but two stops will probably be the trend.” [Read More!]

2015 Japanese Grand Prix - Practice 25 SEP

“The support this weekend has been fantastic”
Suzuka Circuit, Friday September 25

Wet conditions made progress difficult at Suzuka today. Overnight showers eased only slightly before the start of FP1, then returned with a vengeance for much of the rest of the day, meaning that both sessions required the deeper, Full Wet tyre for the majority of running. While Intermediates made brief appearances in both sessions, the conditions quickly worsened, making it too wet to safely run without a Full Wet. [Read More!]

Objectives: Wet set-up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: It was a reasonably quiet day. This morning’s wet track gave us a chance to test the car and tyres in problem situations such as when the track is crossing over between the wet and intermediate tyre. Our tests were well-executed and we learnt a lot. The rest of the day was tougher and we now have a very busy FP3 to capture all the data ready for the race. “The conditions today were tricky. The track was slippery the more it drizzled and Suzuka is a narrow circuit and there are a few corners where the car had a tendency to aquaplane. We have work to do for tomorrow but I think we are ready. The chassis is handling well, cornering in the wet has always been strong for us but we don’t know what the weather will be like tomorrow. Singapore Grand Prix - Singapore, 20 September 2015

Maurizio Arrivabene: “This is a fantastic win! It’s fantastic for Seb, who yesterday put in an awesome qualifying lap, something which reminded me of the great champions of the past. But this result is also fantastic for the whole team, for all the guys here in the Singapore garage, and also for those who work back at Maranello. Kimi’s third place today clearly shows how important and effective was the development work we carried out on our car. Today we have both drivers on the podium and we’re happy with that. And yet, I was not sure that we could make it until we crossed the finish line. A race win is something you build step by step, from the start onwards: and on a track like this, full of unpredictables, and with two safety car periods, the real problem was keeping concentration. Now I don’t want to make predictions for the championship: there are still may points at stake, and obviously we’ll do all that’s in our power to stay in front. But always with great humility and a huge respect for other contenders.” [Read More!]

SINGAPORE GP – QUALIFYING

19 September 2015
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 2, (3rd Practice – 4, 1:46.359)
“It’s really nice to be back up here on the front row; it’s been a while and it’s a bit of coincidence that it’s Seb and I together, but it should be a good race. Qualifying was exciting and to have no Mercedes up here is a surprise, so we will definitely try to capitalize on that - it would be nice to be back in the press conference tomorrow! I’m really happy for the team as we have definitely made a load of progress, since Silverstone and particularly since Budapest. Today’s result backs up the confidence I had in the car. We’ll be aiming for the win, as that’s where the points are and the champagne is. Seb put himself out of reach, so we are second best for today and we’ll try and go one better tomorrow. It’s always a challenge here and you need to have confidence in the car, because it’s hot and physical and a test for the driver which makes it fun. I’m happy with the way the weekend has gone so far.” [Read More!]

Singapore GP Practice

18.09.15
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We've got a bit of work to do on both the low and the high fuel. The drivers are alternately happy on the prime and the option tyre, so we need to work to get them each happy on both compounds. The reality is we need to find a bit of performance as well. The up sides are that we've brought a lot of new parts here, worked through our programme diligently, and they seem to be working well. Now we just have to put everything together to ensure we get a good position in qualifying. [Read More!]

“We’ve had a pretty nice car out of the box at the last few races, because the balance has been right. Both free practices today were good for us, we hit a bit of traffic on the Option lap, but we know what we have and I think we are looking good for the weekend. Saturday is the important day but I am happy we started off on the right foot in free practice. The car felt strong and as expected is performing well at this track. We will be doing some fine tuning tonight. We expect the silver cars and the red ones to turn it up tomorrow, but hopefully we can keep the pace we showed to get up as far the grid as possible.” [Read More!]

RACE PREVIEW
MARINA BAY
18 – 20 SEPTEMBER
A modern-day classic despite its unusual timings as a night race, Singapore has become a popular stop for the Formula One paddock. Due to the high humidity the drivers lose up to three kilos in sweat during the race, so preparation is vital to maintain concentration amidst the looming street circuit barriers. The race’s susceptibility for safety cars makes it one of the longest of the season, and it often finishes close to the FIA’s two hour time limit. Good traction and car stability are vital for a good laptime due to the bumpy nature of the circuit but unlike other street circuits, overtaking is possible. [Read More!]

13th Round of the FIA Formula One World Championship, 18th to 20th September 2015

Hinwil, 14th September 2015 – The Singapore Grand Prix is one of the highlights of the season for the Sauber F1 Team. Not only because of the unique atmosphere which the Marina Bay Street Circuit on the island state offers, but also due to the new aero package that will be introduced on both Sauber C34-Ferrari in Singapore. The night race, as well as the typical high temperatures and high humidity, makes it to one of the most exciting and challenging race weekends on the Formula One calendar for drivers as well as for team members. AHEAD OF THE SINGAPORE & JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

Daniel, it’s traditional for a driver to start the Singapore preview by saying it’s a bit hot and quite humid...
Well it is hot! And very humid! I think it’s all those tall buildings downtown – the heat doesn’t have anywhere to go. It’s the most physical challenge of the year. It’s the only race of the season where you crack open your visor to let in some cool air and instantly wish you hadn’t because it’s hotter outside. By the warm-up lap your chilled drinks bottle is the temperature of a freshly-poured cup of tea. It’s a tough place to race – but I love the challenge. I think most of the drivers do. [Read More!]

2015 Italian Grand Prix - Race Day 06 SEP

“Though expected, a very difficult weekend”
Autodromo Nazionale di Monza, Sunday September 6
As expected, that was a tough afternoon for McLaren-Honda.

Both drivers made strong starts – Jenson Button jumped five cars on the first lap, and ran as high as ninth in the opening laps. However, he was soon passed by a number of faster cars, eventually settling into 15th position. A late retirement from another car elevated him to 14th at the end. [Read More!]

Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso will start 15th and 16th respectively for tomorrow’s Italian Grand Prix.

Jenson qualified 16th, and receives a five-place grid penalty, but will start 15th owing to four cars receiving bigger penalties, which relegate them to the back of the grid. For the same reason, Fernando will start 16th despite qualifying 17th. [Read More!]

2015 Italian Grand Prix - Practice 04 SEP

“This is a circuit we love”
Autodromo di Monza, Friday September 4
A difficult pair of free practice sessions for the team today.
Jenson was sidelined for the majority of the afternoon after his car suffered a coolant leak, which could not be fixed before the end of the session. This meant that the bulk of the evaluative work was conducted from Fernando’s side of the garage.

The engineers will pool data tonight ahead of tomorrow’s free practice and qualifying. However, the afternoon session will be tricky since both cars have grid penalties (Fernando, 10; Jenson, five) for fitting a ninth ICE this weekend. [Read More!]

Italian Race Preview

02.09.2015
MONZA, 4 – 6 SEPTEMBER
Monza is home to some of the most passionate fans in Formula One. The Italian Grand Prix was first held during the inaugural Formula One season in 1950 and has been on the calendar ever since. Four times during a single lap the FW37 will exceed 195mph due to the circuit’s layout. Monza’s history surrounds the circuit with corner names linking back to past greats and the original banking from the 1950s is ever-present. Monza hosts the last visit to Europe for the Formula One fraternity before they head to sunnier climes. The Italian Grand Prix has had six Williams victors, with Felipe Massa securing an emotional podium in 2014 in front of the Tifosi. [Read More!]

Time flies, definitely. As we gear up for the final European Grand Prix of the team's tenth season in Formula 1 – as well as our home race! – we joined another of Max and Carlos' conversations, this time while talking about their preparations for the race, the Italian track, the speed and... Adrenaline rushes!
So... Next one: Monza!
CS: "Monza is such a classic, old-school track, every driver loves to race there!"
MV: "Yes, I just can't wait – it's the type of track I enjoy: high speeds, great braking zones and a unique atmosphere. The only time I drove there was last year during an F3 test, but to actually race there must be such a great feeling..." [Read More!]

The 2015 Formula One World Championship season continues with Round Twelve, the Italian Grand Prix, from Monza

Driver / Senior Management Quotes

Lewis Hamilton
Spa was a really positive weekend for me. I felt comfortable right the way through and it was great to finally get another win at one of the real classic F1 circuits. Now, we head to another of those in Monza. It's an awesome track - so fast and with some of the most passionate fans you'll see anywhere in the world. I was actually at this circuit with Sir Stirling Moss earlier this year, driving the banking in his old Mercedes W 196, which was just awesome. Having that taste of what it was like for those guys back in the day really gives you a feel for the history of this place and why it became so legendary. It's still a big challenge today, too. Fast, but really technical at the same time with some heavy braking and big kerbs to ride for the best line. Racing in Italy brings back a lot of good memories for me and I'd love to add to those this weekend, so that's the aim. [Read More!]
