2016 RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX – SATURDAY 30/04/2016

Max Verstappen (STR11-01, Car 33)
Third Practice Session - Best lap: 1:38.133, pos. 7th, 22 laps
Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:38.123, (Q2) 1:37.510, (Q3) 1:37.583, pos. 9th
“I’m pleased and happy with today’s qualifying result. Especially after a difficult day yesterday, where we were struggling a lot, to come back and get through to Q3 is something I honestly didn’t expect. In addition to that, I’d say this is one of the most difficult qualifying sessions of the season: the track is very slippery and as soon as you brake a meter earlier or later, you immediately lose a lot of lap time and lock-up the tyres… So you really have to be very focused and that’s what I did to end up P9. For sure tomorrow’s race will be another challenge because we are all very close, but I’m ready for it and hopefully we can carry on scoring good points.” [Read More!]

2016 Russian Grand Prix – qualifying

“It’s undeniable that we’re very much a team on the move”
Sochi Autodrom, Saturday April 30

Twelfth and 14th positions respectively for Jenson and Fernando don’t quite tell the story of the progress achieved relative to our principal competitors at this weekend’s Russian Grand Prix.

In Q2, Jenson was a scant 0.095s away from a place in the top 10 shootout – despite both he and his team-mate complaining of understeer on their final, flying laps. [Read More!]

30 April 2016, Sochi
Bittersweet afternoon for the Silver Arrows in Sochi
Nico today claimed his 24th career pole position - his second at the Sochi Autodrom and second of the 2016 season
Nico's Q2 time of 1:36.119 was 1.776 seconds faster than the 2015 pole time
Lewis suffered a Power Unit failure during the out-lap of his second run in Q2, forcing him to sit out Q3
The failure in question has been diagnosed as the same that ruled Lewis out of qualifying at the last race in Shanghai
Nico completed two runs in Q1 (SuperSoft / Supersoft), one run in Q2 (SuperSoft) and one run in Q3 (SuperSoft) [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – QUALIFYING

30 April 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 6*, (Practice 3 – 11, 1:38.622)
“We gained one position with Seb’s penalty so to start 5th is not bad and we are about a tenth off Felipe so it’s close. The track makes it hard to put a lap together, the grip comes and goes so it’s not easy to put all the sectors together but generally I’m happy. We are obviously a long way off the Mercedes but we expected that so if we can race the Williams tomorrow that would be good. We don’t have much of an advantage here because it’s a one stop, everyone is able to push on the tyres and it will be flat out for a majority of the race therefore we are not able to do much with strategy. If we finish in the top five, that would be a very good result for us. There is a lot of fan support here for Dany, which is really nice to see, the atmosphere is good.” [Read More!]

29 April

Russian GP Practice

29/04/2016
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We’ve had a very complex test programme today. We looked at various different suspension and set-up options, we’ve been looking at aerodynamic configurations with the front wing and we’ve been doing our homework on the tyres so it’s been really busy. We’ve collected all of the data that we need to but we have a long night ahead to make sure we have the car optimised for tomorrow. The team’s done a good job in getting through the programme after the clutch actuation problem we had with Felipe’s car this morning, which put us on the back foot but we managed to recover and get through everything that we needed to. The car looks reasonably competitive on low and especially high fuel, which is what we’re always working towards. So for this stage of the weekend we are where we need to be, maybe even a little further up the road. [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

29 April 2016

First Practice Session: Position: 6, Best Time: 1:39.650, Laps: 24
Second Practice Session: Position: 5, Best Time: 1:39.084, Laps: 34
“It was different this morning running with the aeroscreen, not having the wind rolling on me and the engine sound was different as well. The visibility was pretty good, so first impressions were fine, it was driveable. Where we have the structure in place is pretty much where the mirrors are so I wouldn’t say it hindered any more than we are now in terms of visibility. Peripheral vision was fine as well. The talk about open cockpits has been going on for a while and that’s fair enough. It would be great to keep it as it is but obviously with accidents that have happened, especially more recently, I think not exploring this seems a bit disrespectful. The plan is to probably try it again on a different circuit with different scenery, a bit more undulation or something like that or maybe a night circuit. The lights could be interesting how they reflect off the screen so we’ll give it a bit more running.” [Read More!]

“It feels good to be back here in Russia. As I said before arriving here, this is a track that I enjoy and today we were able to cover all of our run plan with no issues, so I’m happy with that. I’m pleased with the car so far and I’m looking forward to the rest of the weekend. As we’ve seen during the first three races, the midfield is extremely tight so we need to keep working because it’s not going to be easy.” [Read More!]

Sochi Autodrom
This weekend we’ll be snaking our way around the Olympic Park in Sochi, host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, at Round 4 of the 2016 FIA Formula 1 World Championship, the Russian Grand Prix. Once again this is virgin territory for Pascal Wehrlein but familiar asphalt for Rio Haryanto, who has raced here twice before in GP2. It’s just seven months since we last raced at this challenging 5.848km circuit, as a calendar shift sees Sochi switching from an autumn event to spring. Let’s catch up with our drivers and Racing Director Dave Ryan. [Read More!]

AHEAD OF THE RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX

Daniel Ricciardo
“Sochi is not the Russia I pictured before I first went there. All of a sudden I saw a beautiful blue beach, which made me feel as if I was in a resort and they also have a very modern facility with the Olympic Park.
“I think the track hasn’t suited us in the last two years, but we’ve had some strong races so far this year on circuits we didn’t think suited us either so let’s see what happens. In the past it’s been quite a low grip. It got a bit better last year but it’s still quite slippery and because there is not that much tyre wear we haven’t done many pit stops in the past. CHINESE GP – RACE

17 April 2016
DANIIL KVYAT, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: 6th
“I really enjoyed the race today. Our pace was very strong and to get this result at this track where we didn’t expect to be so strong is really great. The car is performing really well, the chassis is easy to drive and with further upgrades coming to the power unit, we should be in an even stronger position. I think it was a fair move on Vettel. I saw the gap and I went for it. We didn’t touch, unfortunately for him, Kimi was on his other side. For me it was a logical move and it paid off with a podium. It’s a nice boost for our side of the garage after a couple of tricky races. It’s also good for the team to be consistently fighting for podiums this year. It’s very encouraging for the season. I’m a very happy man today and it’s nice to carry this feeling heading into my home grand prix in Russia.” [Read More!]

CHINESE GRAND PRIX – SHANGHAI CIRCUIT, 16 APRIL

Chinese GP - Kimi Raikkonen
Sebastian Vettel: “I don’t think I deserved to be in the top three today. We saved tyres, so we start tomorrow on Supersofts. I thought I could make it in the last lap, but my only run wasn’t special overall. I asked too much from my tyres already at the beginning and then I did a couple of small mistakes here and there, which cost me a lot of lap time. So in the end my run was not so good, but this is how it is and we can’t change it now. [Read More!]

CHINESE GP – QUALIFYING

16 April 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 2, (Practice 3, No Time Set)
“Compared to last year we’ve certainly got a bit more from the power unit. We’ve seen the trend in the first couple of races and the deficit hasn’t been as big as last year on the straights but I didn’t expect to be standing here unless it was a wet qualifying. To be front row in the dry is pretty cool. A few people joked saying it’s the haircut so maybe that’s what it is: aerodynamic. The positive is that Niko’s on the Soft and we’re obviously starting on the Super Soft, so the start should be interesting. Hopefully we’ll battle the Ferrari’s for the podium. New or old qualifying system, we seem to be competitive so that’s nice.” [Read More!]

Second Practice Session: Position: 5, Best Time: 1:38.143, Laps: 31
“Looking at the lap times we are fairly satisfied but I think there is still more to come in terms of balance. If we find what we’re after, we’ll be a lot closer to where we want to be. I think most guys were struggling for balance because we seem to be relatively competitive. But the car was a bit of a handful today and I think it was like that for everyone. We saw quite a few guys spin this morning, maybe the wind was having quite a big effect as well. The long runs at the end with the Soft tyre were promising and the pace didn’t look too bad. If it rains tomorrow it should give us a bit more of a chance. I’d say top 5 would be achievable for us.” [Read More!]

2016 Formula 1 Pirelli Chinese Grand Prix – Preview

Q&A with Vijay Mallya
Team Principal, Vijay Mallya, reflects on the opening couple of races ahead of the Chinese Grand Prix.

Vijay, the team was out of luck in Bahrain, but there were some positives…
“Bahrain was a missed opportunity. Two front wing changes in the space of two laps put us on the back foot and prevented us from playing a part in the outcome of the race. It’s disappointing because we know the car has the speed to be right up there fighting for points. So that’s the positive we must focus on as we prepare for the upcoming races.” [Read More!]

AHEAD OF THE CHINESE GRAND PRIX

Daniel Ricciardo
“The straight at the Shanghai International Circuit is super long which makes it pretty different compared to other tracks. Coming off that straight, you then have to brake for one of the tightest corners on the calendar – you go from one of the highest speeds to the lowest. Turns 1, 2 and 3 are like one big corner, really long and uphill, and this makes it really tough on the front left tyre, it’s one of the toughest circuits for that which can be interesting. BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Bahrain Grand Prix - Sakhir Circuit, 3 April
Kimi Raikkonen: “The start was not ideal, but luckily we did not lose too many places in the first lap. After that I tried to recover, and was able to overtake some cars and make the best out of it. We managed to do good pit-stops with the right tire choices and the speed was quite good, too. In the end we were catching up a bit on the Mercedes in front, but I never got close enough to try and pass Nico. Considering what happened in the first lap it’s a pretty ok result, it’s not what we want but we keep working and improving things. We are going in the right direction, but obviously it’s not ideal for the team to have only one car finishing the race. In this sport we always push to the limits and sometimes things can go wrong, this is not what we want but it’s part of racing. We know that the car is pretty good but we have certain things to improve and still some work to be done.” [Read More!]

2016 Bahrain Grand Prix

“A flawlessly mature performance”
Bahrain International Circuit, Sunday April 3
Stoffel Vandoorne scored McLaren-Honda’s first world championship point of the season after a faultless drive to 10th place on his grand prix debut.
The young Belgian, deputising this weekend for Fernando Alonso, started 12th, stayed out of trouble on the opening lap as the field bunched up and collected one another on the approach to Turn One. Thereafter, he kept his nose clean throughout all four stints, pulled off some confident passing manoeuvres and drove cleanly and consistently to the chequered flag.
Jenson had a short-lived race. After running strongly inside the top 10, he encountered a sudden power unit issue and was forced to pull the car onto the run-off and retire on lap seven. [Read More!]

2016 Formula 1 Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix, Sunday

Renault Sport Formula One team fought a tough Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix with Kevin Magnussen finishing in eleventh place and Jolyon Palmer failing to make the start.
Kevin’s race began from the pit lane due to a penalty incurred during practice on Friday but he fought through the field to finish just shy of the points. Jolyon returned to the pits at the end of the formation lap due to suspected hydraulic issue with his car. Kevin started the race from the pitlane on new soft compound Pirellis, changing to a set of fresh super soft tyres on laps 12, 24 and 38. Jolyon started the formation lap in P19 on new super soft tyres. [Read More!]

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 4th, Start Position: 5th
“The race start was interesting. I didn’t get off the line very well and I could see it was getting a bit chaotic into Turn 1. I tried to capitalize on it but ended up with damage on the front wing when Bottas and I came together. There was a moment that I thought I would have to pit for a new wing as the chunk that came off looked pretty substantial but we were able to hang in there for a few laps, racing with the Williams. The damage didn’t affect me too much and we had a good race, although a little lonely towards the end, with some decent points scored.” [Read More!]

2016 Bahrain Grand Prix – qualifying

“There’s definitely more to come from the full package”
Bahrain International Circuit, Saturday April 2
Qualifying in Bahrain was almost a carbon copy of our qualifying performance in Australia a fortnight ago.
Both drivers conducted two runs on the Option tyre in Q1, comfortably edging through into Q2. In the second session, without a second set of tyres to take the fight to the cars at the front, each driver completed a single run, establishing us on the fringes of the top 10, just as in Melbourne.
Stoffel will start his first grand prix 12th; Jenson, who wasn’t entirely happy with his car’s balance during his Q2 lap, will line up directly behind him in 14th. [Read More!]

2016 Bahrain Grand Prix – free practice

"It's fun to have a car that's enjoyable to drive”
Bahrain International Circuit, Friday April 1
Strong winds made for tricky conditions in the desert during the first free practice session, although a dry day on track was welcome after a few days of uncharacteristically wet weather and cooler temperatures in Bahrain.
Following yesterday’s decision by the FIA doctors to rest Fernando for the weekend, the team did a fantastic job to ready chassis #02 for Stoffel Vandoorne, who deputises for Fernando this weekend. Stoffel quickly got to work on a busy aero and mechanical set-up programme. “Dany is probably happier with his Friday than I was with mine. This morning wasn’t too bad but from the very first lap this afternoon I locked the front into Turn 1 which killed that set of tyres. We couldn’t use that set for the long run which compromised our afternoon programme. With the super softs on the low fuel we still needed to find a bit more balance, and with the high fuel run, we were interrupted with the virtual safety cars. We still have some homework to do but we’ll see how tomorrow goes. I think Q3 will be on the edge for us, but the race will be better.” [Read More!]

Bahrain GP Practice

01.04.16
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: It was a key day for us because we missed out on so much work in Melbourne due to the weather during practice. The low fuel runs were good and put us about where we expected to be. The high fuel runs were also very encouraging as they were better than what we saw in the Melbourne race. In addition, we’ve got some further upgrades coming for tomorrow which will put us in even better shape. [Read More!]
