BELGIAN GRAND PRIX – SPA-FRANCORCHAMPS, 27 AUGUST

Kimi Raikkonen: ”So far it has been a decent weekend, the car was behaving well today and we had the speed. My first run in Q3 was very good, but I went sideways and off track. The second attempt was even better, but in the last chicane I had some slight understeer and lost a few tenths compared to my Q2 sector. Today I felt we had the chance to get pole position, so I’m a bit disappointed, my laptime was not good enough. On a positive side, we are very close compared to the last couple of races. We decided to start the race with Soft tires, if you can make them work it will make a massive difference, we’ll see how the race will pan out but I think our plan will be fine. We’ll do our best, of course the hot conditions won’t be easy for the tires, but it’s the same for everybody. Hopefully we’ll be up there fighting also tomorrow.” [Read More!]

“It’s being a very tough weekend for us, maybe even a bit more than expected, and it’s disappointing not to be able to fight to get into Q3. On one side I’m happy because I know I’ve extracted the maximum out of the car today, but on the other side I’m sad to see us sitting in P15, a second off Q3. It’s not good enough. There’s a lot of analysis going on right now inside the team to see where we are losing so much performance – we know the reason for half of it, it’s due to the 2015 power unit, but we need to understand why we are not performing as expected in Sector 2. We’ve been slow all weekend so tomorrow’s race will be difficult. I’m confident that a right strategy will get us close to the top ten, but it won’t be easy to finish in the points. Having said that, we will give it our all and fight hard to finish as high up as possible.”

BELGIAN GP – QUALIFYING

27 AUGUST 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 2nd, 1:46.893 (Practice 3 – no time was set)
“It’s a great feeling. As soon as I crossed the line in Q3 on my fastest lap, I could see the fans going really wild so I knew it was a good lap. It’s been already an amazing weekend. To see so many fans around the track and feel their support is incredible and I’ve been enjoying the whole week a lot, so to be second on the grid is fantastic. It would have been very difficult to get pole position. The chance is always there if you are that close and in sector two we were very strong, but we were missing some top speed. Tomorrow will be very interesting with the different strategies between us, Mercedes and Ferrari so I think it’ll be a good fight. Hopefully the supersofts will give me a bit more grip in the first few laps and then for sure I will drop off a bit but that’s my strategy. I will probably have to pit a bit earlier but we have to wait and see how the race goes. Big thanks to the team for such a quick turnaround and working so hard on getting me out on time in Qualifying.”

Belgian GP Qualifying

27/08/16
Valtteri Bottas qualified eighth and Felipe Massa 10th for the Belgian Grand Prix.
Valtteri progressed from Q1 into Q2 in P10 after his opening run on the supersoft tyre. As a result of a software issue that affected both drivers Felipe was forced to use up another set of supersoft tyres. With a clear track Felipe was able to comfortably progress in P1
In Q2 Felipe and Valtteri both secured their places in Q3 in P6 and P7, with their only run in the session.
Valtteri was the first driver out on track in Q3. On his only flying lap he set a time that was good enough for P8 overall. Felipe only had one new set of supersofts available for Q3 and locked up into turn one on his only flying lap, which cost him a lot of time. Unable to set another time on his worn tyres Felipe had to settle for P10.

Weather: sunny and dry, 28-32°C air, 31-43°C track

During qualifying ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix in Spa-Francorchamps, both Sauber F1 Team drivers were unable to make it into Q2. Felipe Nasr almost made it into the second qualifying session, finishing in P17, while Marcus Ericsson ended up in P20. After already having issues with the power unit in FP3, Ericsson’s Sauber C35-Ferrari again had a lack of power in qualifying, which especially on this highspeed-track, is a disadvantage. The Swede will also get a ten place grid penalty for using the sixth turbo charger. Nevertheless, Nasr and Ericsson are confindent about making up positions during the race.

Belgian GP Friday Practice Recap

Aug 26, 2016
Unusually warm weather greeted drivers and their teams on Friday at Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps as practice began for Sunday’s Belgian Grand Prix. With not a cloud in sight, sunshine bathed the 7.004-kilometer (4.352-mile), 19-turn circuit with temperatures of 26 degrees Celsius (79 degrees Fahrenheit) and 31 degrees Celsius (88 degrees Fahrenheit) for FP1 and FP2, respectively.
Haas F1 Team drivers Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez made their installation laps in FP1 using unmarked prototype tires from Pirelli. And after making their first at-speed runs on the Pirelli P Zero Yellow soft tires, with Gutiérrez running six laps and Grosjean turning five laps, each driver returned to the prototype tires for some flying laps. The prototype tires are being evaluated by Pirelli for use later this season, where the design is better able to withstand contact with curbing and minimal contact with other cars.

2016 Formula 1 Belgium Grand Prix, Friday

An uncharacteristically hot and sunny Spa-Francorchamps circuit greeted teams on the opening day of practice for the 2016 Formula 1 Belgian Grand Prix. Both Renault Sport Formula One Team drivers completed 20 laps in the morning as they ran through aero evaluation programmes and tyre comparisons. The afternoon session brought 66 laps in total, with Kevin Magnussen ending the day in nineteenth position and Jolyon in twentieth.

Belgian Grand Prix - Spa-Francorchamps 26 August

Kimi Raikkonen: “In the morning the feeling with the car was pretty good, but then in the afternoon, when I put the Supersofts on, I struggled to put a good lap together and I kept running off the circuit. For the long run we changed some things but I was still struggling, for whatever reason. It was one of those days when you start well and then the feeling is not right anymore, but I’m sure we can find the right set up for tomorrow. It will be tricky with the tires, but it’s the same for everybody. I haven’t had time to check what the others were doing, it’s too early to have an idea, but for sure there is some work to be done. We have to go through everything and take out the best.”

Practice sessions ahead of the Belgian Grand Prix went according to the plan for the Sauber F1 Team. Following several rear wing tests before the summer break, both Sauber C35-Ferraris hit the track in Spa-Francorchamps for the first time with an optimised aero package consisting of a new front wing and floor, as well as brake ducts. MAX VERSTAPPEN
First Practice Session: 1:49.865, Position: 7, Laps: 24
Second Practice Session: 1:48.085, Position: 1, Laps: 27
“It has been a very positive Friday for us. We showed great pace today in comparison with other teams, though it’s hard to say what Mercedes is like. Of course I’m happy to be first in front of so many Dutch fans but it’s still not qualifying and not the race so let’s see. When I went up to first position in the second practice the fans were all cheering me on with their flags. It definitely gives me a boost and motivates me a lot. This track is very difficult for setting up the car balance so I also had some struggles but at the end it paid off with the last set up change we did. We’ll see what happens tomorrow. I’m sure we can improve even more, but we have to wait and see what the others are doing. So far we had a very good start to the weekend.”

Belgian GP Practice

26/08/2016
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: The weather has been uncharacteristically kind to us so far and is really quite hot. With the Pirelli prescriptions that we’re running at the moment the running pressures are very high and therefore the degradation is massive. So I hope we can resolve this with Pirelli. Everyone was degrading the option and the qualifying tyre between three tenths and half a second, which is an amazing amount of degradation. With Valtteri, we lost most of the session this afternoon due to a telemetry issue resulting in an ECU change. Unfortunately, he didn’t get a clear run on the supersoft tyre so there’s obviously a lot that we can gain there. Felipe was struggling with the balance of the car on both high and low fuel, but we’ve got some good ideas on what we need to do tonight. What was really encouraging was Valtteri’s high fuel pace. I think he had the least degradation out of everybody and his pace was right there with the front running cars.

Previews and Personnel News – 2016 Formula One Belgian Grand Prix & Heineken Italian Grand Prix

23.08.2016
13th and 14 th Round of the FIA Formula One World Championship

After a two week summer break and factory shutdown, the Sauber F1 Team goes into the second part of the 2016 season with a new aero package. Another back to back race weekened is approaching on two traditional tracks: One is the longest, the other one is the fastest. Following the Belgian Grand Prix (28th August), which is a kind of roller coaster ride on the legendary Ardennes race track in Spa-Francorchamps, the Swiss Team heads straight to the Italian Grand Prix (4th September) on the “Autodromo Nazionale di Monza”. The track near Milan is known for the highest speed on any straights on the calendar. The weekend is always like a home grand prix for the Sauber F1 Team, as Monza is not far away from the Swiss border. The Italian Grand Prix will be the last round of the 2016 FIA Formula One World Championship in Europe.

2016 BELGIAN GRAND PRIXVIEW

It’s been a well-deserved two-week break for the whole team, but we are now back and ready for more… And it’s off to Spa we go! For Carlos this track is, together with Silverstone, his favourite one. Both himself and Daniil enjoy the famous Eau Rouge corner: “you really need to be brave and go for it!” says the Russian, while Carlos also adds that it’s “probably the best corner in the world!” All in all, it’s a special layout and both our drivers just can’t wait to get back in the car and go racing: “It’s a unique race weekend” says Carlos, while Daniil describes it as “very exciting for the driver.” Bring it on!

AHEAD OF THE BELGIAN AND ITALIAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen
"It has been a nice relaxing break after a busy start to the summer. I managed to spend some time with my family, get some rest and have a bit of fun. Going into Spa it should be a great weekend, there will be a lot of Belgian and also Dutch fans. They are all coming to one of the most famous tracks on the calendar and from the driver’s point of view one of the favourites also. I had a really good weekend there last year so hopefully we can have an even better result this year.
“Spa is the longest track we go to, I did a track walk last year and it felt long so I will probably use a bicycle this year. Also last year I drove part of the circuit the wrong way for a Live Demo, it was definitely interesting and quite a lot different. Downhill into Eau Rouge was pretty scary, the barriers aren’t made for that but it went well and not many people get the chance to do it.
“After Spa we head straight to Monza, it’s really cool because of the history of the track as well as being a really fun track to drive. The food though is of course the best in the world. I have spent a lot of time in Italy so to go back, eat some local food and see some old friends will be very nice. I can’t wait to get back there.”

2016 Formula One Belgian Grand Prix, Preview

Vijay Mallya on Spa
Vijay Mallya sets his sights on a strong showing in Spa as the Formula One season resumes.

Vijay, the team’s strong season continued with more points last time out in Germany. What can we expect this weekend in Spa?
VJM: “More of the same, I hope. We are performing well and delivering results, and Spa represents a good opportunity to continue our run of points finishes. The updates we introduced at Silverstone have made a difference and there is still more performance to be extracted from our chassis. I think all teams have now switched their focus to 2017 so the pecking order should not change dramatically. Some tracks will suit us more than others, but Spa is certainly a track where the VJM09 can be strong.”

First day of testing with the 2017 Pirelli tyres

THE FUTURE TAKES TO THE TRACK
Maranello, 1 August – Sebastian Vettel drove an SF15-T today at the Fiorano track, in the first of a series of test sessions that Pirelli is undertaking, using the wider tyres to be adopted as from 2017. A series of runs was completed, using various specifications of wet weather tyres, thanks to the artificial watering system fitted at this track. The German did 120 laps and tomorrow he hands over to the Haas F1 Team driver, Esteban Gutierrez, for the second and final day of this test. [Read More!]
