Haas F1 Team Sees Frustrating Race in Mexico

Oct 30, 2016
Haas F1 Team drivers Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean finished 19th and 20th, respectively, in the Mexican Grand Prix Sunday at the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez in Mexico City. The result capped a frustrating race weekend for the first-year team, as struggles in practice on Friday led to a disappointing qualifying performance on Saturday with neither driver getting out of Q1.
Gutiérrez started the 71-lap race from 17th in the 22-car field, while Grosjean started from the pit lane. Crew members had to change the floor of Grosjean’s car race morning, and because it was different from the floor used in qualifying, FIA regulations required a pit-lane start.

2016 Formula 1 Gran Premio de Mexico, Sunday

31 October 2016
Renault Sport Formula One Team’s Jolyon Palmer put in a strong and strategic charge from the back of the grid to take fourteenth in today’s Formula 1 Gran Premio de México. Jolyon started P21 and made a pit stop under the safety car at the end of the first lap. This meant he used Pirelli’s medium compound tyres for a massive 70-lap stint. Kevin Magnussen started from P14 and his race strategy was modified from a one to a two-stop strategy, with a final stint on the super soft tyres. [Read More!]

2016 Mexican Grand Prix

Grand Prix, Mexico, Race | 31/10/2016
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Sunday October 30

Today was a frustrating day for the McLaren-Honda team. Both drivers ran clean races and pushed hard, and were two of the very small number of drivers able to pass their nearest rivals on track.

The team split the strategies, Jenson pitting once and Fernando twice, in an effort to get the best out of the tyres on the slippery track and make progress through the traffic. On a circuit at which it is notoriously difficult to overtake, and despite their best efforts and some hard battles on track, neither driver was able fully to capitalise on their pace and duly finished in 12th and 13th positions.

2016 MEXICAN GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 30/10/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 16th
“It just wasn’t our day today… What a tough afternoon! During the laps to the grid I already felt that there was something wrong with the gearbox while downshifting, as well as with the brakes that kept overheating from the first lap onwards – we didn’t have the pace today and these issues didn’t help. If to all this you also add a 5-second penalty for impeding Fernando during Lap 1… It just became a very difficult race from the very start and it meant we were never going to finish in the points unfortunately. It’s a shame, because we had a very good day yesterday, but this is racing and finishes like last Sunday in Austin don’t happen every day!” [Read More!]

The Sauber F1 Team finished the Mexican Grand Prix at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez in P11 (Marcus Ericsson) and P16 (Felipe Nasr). Due to a penalty for Carlos Sainz after the race, Felipe Nasr gained one position, moving up to P15. Both drivers completed the 71-lap race in Mexico City with a one stop strategy. The 2016 FIA Formula One Championship will continue in two weeks time with the penultimate race of the season: the Brazlian Grand Prix in Sao Paulo/Interlagos – the home race for Felipe Nasr. Mexican Grand Prix

30/10/16
Valtteri Bottas finished eighth and Felipe Massa ninth in the Mexican Grand Prix
Both cars managed to get a clean start on the supersoft tyre and tried to extend the first stint for as long as possible to make a one-stop strategy work
Valtteri pitted on lap 19 to replace his supersofts for medium tyres, and the strategy worked perfectly with the chasing Perez remaining behind him following his stop soon afterwards. Valtteri overtook Felipe on track, and drove a solid and consistent race to finish in eighth and collect four points
Felipe made a strong start, going from ninth to sixth in the opening laps, and pitted for the medium tyre on lap 14. He ran in ninth for the majority of the race on the medium tyre, holding off a chasing Perez who had newer medium tyres and DRS for much of the race

MEXICAN GRAND PRIX – MEXICO CITY, 30 OCTOBER

Maurizio Arrivabene: “Today could have felt special: we fully deserved this podium, which was taken away by bureaucracy. The whole team had showed great stamina by staying united and focused in a difficult moment. Our strategy had made it possible to make good progress through the race and both drivers did a very good job. Unfortunately, we were penalized by Stewards’ unappealable decision which, in my opinion, is too harsh and somehow unfair.”

30 OCTOBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 3rd (5th)*, Start Position: 4th
“Obviously I’m happy to get the points and I think that means third for me in the Drivers’ Championship so I’m quite proud of that this year. Sure it would have been nice to get up on the podium and enjoy it but none the less that was the situation today. It was a fun race. Even though I was quite frustrated after the race with the incident and all that, I still had a lot of fun with that battle. And being the hunter at the end is so much more fun than driving around by yourself. The race came alive and obviously it became a bit spicy but it was a cool day. Sure I want to race and having penalties after the race isn’t ideal, but I did feel today that it was called for. I committed to the move and he squeezed me. Racing should be tough and l don’t expect being waved through but we talked about the moving under braking and that’s on paper now. The only thing I’m disappointed of is not to be in the stadium in that moment but the podium is still up so I’ll go and have a few photos with the guys.”*finish position revised following penalty for Car 5

2016 Mexican Grand Prix – qualifying

Grand Prix, Mexico, Qualifying
Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez, Saturday October 29
Today was a drama-free day at the Autόdromo Hermanos Rodríguez, with both drivers managing clean laps and the team executing a perfect run plan.

The final practice session was dedicated to both high- and low-fuel running in preparation for qualifying and the race, as the team were able to evaluate better the different tyre compounds on a much warmer track than yesterday.

In qualifying, both drivers put in solid laps in clear air and were able to progress beyond Q1 without any issues. The top 10 was not quite within reach and both drivers reported that grip was at a premium on the slippery asphalt. Fernando will consequently start tomorrow’s race in 11th place and Jenson in 13th.

Kevin proceeded to Q2 where he set a 1min 21.131secs lap using Pirelli’s super soft tyres. Mexican Grand Prix - Mexico City 29 October

Kimi Raikkonen: “In Q1 the feeling with the car was good, better than in the morning during P3. Then in Q2 it was quite tricky to get the tires work consistently and to know where the grip was. In the last qualifying stint we were getting there again, but in the first run I felt it a bit odd in the last part of the lap and felt I could have gone faster in a few places. On the second try, for whatever reason, I had no speed in the straight, something was not right and we could not even try to go faster. It’s a pity because I think there was easily quite a lot of speed there today, but we couldn’t use it. Now we have to find out what happened. Obviously it’s disappointing where we finished today but tomorrow we’ll see what we can do.” [Read More!]

“I’m very pleased! It’s being a tricky weekend because of the challenging track conditions. If I say the truth, at the start of Q1 I thought it was going to be difficult to get into Q3… And here we are, P10 again for the second consecutive time in one week! It’s a massive achievement for me and the team! I’m feeling very confident in the car lately and I think this is part of the reason why we are achieving these positive results: I can push straight away, develop my weekend well and make it to these positions. I’m going through a good moment and both the team and I can be extremely proud about this – what we’ve been achieving during these two couple of races is not easy! I’m very happy. Tomorrow it will be tough: We don’t have the tyre-strategy advantage and we will need the supersoft tyre to work well during my first stint, as the guys behind will be pushing to get past me. We need to be cautious but we will for sure have some fun!” [Read More!]

Mexican GP Qualifying

Valtteri Bottas qualified eighth and Felipe Massa ninth for the Mexican Grand Prix
Both cars easily advanced from Q1 to Q2 on a set of supersoft tyres
The team attempted to get both cars through to Q3 on a set of soft tyres, but switched strategy to complete Q2 on the supersoft tyre with both cars through in eighth and ninth respectively.
In Q3, with the rising track temperatures reducing the grip levels, both cars were struggling to set their fastest laps of the day, and crossed the chequered flag once again in eighth and ninth on the supersoft tyre. [Read More!]

MEXICAN GP – QUALIFYING

29 OCTOBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 3rd, 1:19.054 (Practice 3 – P1 1:19.137)
“I am very pleased with the way qualifying went, we have put ourselves on the second row again which means we are in an ideal position to fight from the start. All weekend we have had a good car. We are still just a little down on top speed which makes it hard to compete with the Mercedes in qualifying, but we are still pretty close so that is a good achievement. My Q2 lap was really good and felt quick but I just couldn’t find the same grip levels in Q3 which meant I was slightly slower. I struggled in sector one which is usually my best sector, that shows how the grip can change in a matter of minutes. It’s still a hard lap out there, everyone is in the same position and has to adapt to the slippery conditions. It’s fun, but a different kind of fun. At some tracks you can have a perfect lap but here it is so hard. It is a long run into Turn 1 and we start on the supersoft compound so our chances of making progress straight away is high. Race pace looked strong which means we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:37.744, (Q2) 1:37.175, (Q3) 1:37.326, pos. 10th
“I can’t be happier than what I’m feeling today after that qualifying session! After quite a complicated FP3, where I didn’t get much track time due to the two punctures, to suddenly put such a great lap together in Q2 and get through to Q3 is just amazing – I was really happy when I was told my position over the radio! I’m sure the team was also very pleased, it’s definitely something we needed after some tough race weekends. Today is one of the days I will always remember of my 2016 season! Tomorrow will be a tough race but we will certainly try our best to fight for points!”

UNITED STATES GP – QUALIFYING

22 OCTOBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 3rd, 1:35.509 (Practice 3 – P2 1:37.032)
“I’m happy with qualifying for sure. It was pretty much the best we could do today, good progression and we got quicker and quicker. We start on the supersofts and the guys around me are on softs so I hope that works out well for me. We suspected that would be the case and I was happy to do it, hopefully it gives me a little bit off the start and we can challenge the first lap. The supersofts probably won’t have as much range as the softs so you want to try and get at least a handful of laps out of them, but ideally it puts me in a better position off the start and hopefully I can dictate my own pace as opposed to fighting in traffic.”

UNITED STATES GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

21 OCTOBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO
First Practice Session: 1:39.963, Position: 7, Laps: 26
Second Practice Session: 1:37.552, Position: 2, Laps: 33
“I’m happy with today. This morning was solid and the long run pace was good. We made a few changes in between the two sessions and look pretty good for now so hopefully we’ll stay like that. On our long run pace we look like we’re able to match Mercedes, possibly quicker, so if we get the pace we had today against Mercedes on Sunday it’s going to be a fun race. It is only Friday though so let’s see what they’re doing tomorrow but it’s nice to start the weekend on the right foot. I don’t think we’ve got hours and hours of work ahead of us. Just a little bit of fine tuning as always but we don’t have to search for too much at the moment.”

Apart from that, the usual race preparation was part of the programme with short and long-runs on soft as well as supersoft tyres. Ericsson and Nasr completed 45 and 44 laps respectively. Nico Hülkenberg VJM09-03

Nico: “It was a straightforward Friday - the way you want to start a weekend, really. We didn’t have any major issues with the car and we were able to do a good amount of mileage. We tried a few different things with our set-up this afternoon, so the job tonight is to try and understand the best direction to take going forward. I am reasonably happy with the balance of the car, but I know we can make some improvements tonight. So we’re in a good place to start and I am optimistic for tomorrow and Sunday.”

“It was definitely good fun out there today and a positive Friday overall – last year we didn’t get to do many laps here in the dry, so it was a pretty new track for me this time round. I have to say that I’ve enjoyed the day: this is a special and charismatic track which is exciting to drive! From a performance point of view, we are exactly where we expected to be, but we will keep on working hard and see where we end up at the end of the weekend.”

United States GP Practice

21/10/2016
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: Today was a fairly standard Friday for us and the focus has been on completing our work plan as usual and getting the data we need. We had new aerodynamic components on the car this morning that we were testing, a new front wing and brake duct, and these looked reasonably positive with good driver feedback. Valtteri tested the halo this morning as well. It was a purely aesthetic device to gauge driver reaction and visibility. In the afternoon we focused on our normal tyre and set-up work. On the long and short runs we look to be roughly where we expect to be relative to the teams we are battling with, so I’m optimistic we can have a decent weekend. With the midfield looking as tight as it is, qualifying well will be very important, so we need to make no mistakes.

USA and Mexican Grands Prix Preview

USA

21-23 OCTOBER
CIRCUIT OF THE AMERICAS
ROUND 18 OF 21

Formula One has made several attempts in the past two decades to regain a successful foothold in the United States, and seems to have finally struck gold with the Circuit of the Americas. The sport is steeped in history in the USA, with the likes of Watkins Glen and Long Beach helping to define that era, but after transitions through Detroit, Dallas and Phoenix it struggled to find a permanent home. The short-lived stay in Indianapolis was followed by a five-year absence, but since 2012, the universally-popular Texas venue has carried Formula One back with a bang. Williams has scored victories at four US circuits, with Alan Jones at Watkins Glen in 1980 and Las Vegas in 1981, and Keke Rosberg at Dallas in 1984 and Detroit in 1985.

Last year the Sauber F1 Team celebrated its 400th GP in Texas, at which Felipe Nasr scored two points by finishing in the top ten. The Mexican Grand Prix is directly afterwards on the calendar, which is a popular race weekend with teams and drivers after its successful revival in Mexico City in 2015.

Vijay on America
Team Principal, Vijay Mallya, reflects on a successful couple of weeks in Asia as the World Championships heads to North America.

VJM: “Malaysia and Japan were positive races for us. We were close to maximising our potential at each of those events and that’s all we can do at this stage of the season. Sepang and Suzuka provide a tough test of a Formula One car and our strong form is a good sign for the races to come.

JAPANESE GP – RACE

09 OCTOBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 2nd, Start Position: 3rd
“We knew the start was going to be very decisive and we had a really good one today which allowed me to settle into my own rhythm. I’m pleased the starts are coming together, that’s two in a row now. I was then able to sit behind Nico (Rosberg) and control my tyres. The team gave me a really strong strategy, along with a car that felt very balanced so I was able to enjoy a successful race. I was really happy to be able to get in-between the two Mercedes cars, it is a great result yet again for the team. In the race we had quick pace but I think Nico was still only cruising. When I sped up Nico could match it and if I slowed he did also, he was in control. Lewis (Hamilton) was obviously a bit quicker in the final stages and I knew he was going to catch me, the gap time on the pit board was dropping every lap. Into the last chicane I saw him coming in my mirrors so I defended my position, this allowed me to hang on for the second place.

Daniil Kvyat (STR11-03, Car 26)
Race: Pos. 13th
“A P13 was the maximum we could do today, I really don’t think we could’ve done much better. Nothing extraordinary happened today, there were no Safety Car periods or retirements, so we didn’t gain any positions that way either. Our straight-line speed is just nowhere, which is very unfortunate, but there’s not much more we can do, we’re just too slow. On the positive side, I feel better in the car race after race and our team work is constantly improving, so we will go on doing our best to finish the season knowing that we couldn’t have done more!”

2016 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX – SATURDAY 08/10/2016

Daniil Kvyat (STR11-03, Car 26)

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:32.645, (Q2) 1:32.623, pos. 13th
“I’m quite happy with my qualifying session. Both my Q1 and Q2 laps were good and to be honest I don’t think there was much more to extract from the car today and I did my best. I also think the whole team around me works very well, we now follow our own system which works well – they deserve the good laps I put in! We will now go for it in tomorrow’s race and see how close we can get to those point positions. It will be interesting if the weather mixes it all up a bit, but it’s not something we can ask for and we are ready for any scenario – we will just settle in and see what we can do from a P13. I’m feeling better and better in the car, much more confident every time and I look forward to tomorrow’s race!”

JAPANESE GP – QUALIFYING

08 OCTOBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 5th*, 1:31.178 (Practice 3 – P4 1:32.784)
“Not such a bad result in qualifying but I think the whole team expected a bit better. We wanted to be in front of the Ferraris, we were very close but the balance of our car wasn’t quite right. In the low speed corners where we are usually very strong it didn’t quite work for us today, this could be the changing conditions but I’m not entirely sure. Staring fourth on the grid tomorrow gives us a chance of a good result so we can still be positive. Our race pace looks ok but everyone looks quite strong at the moment so it is quite unknown how tomorrow will play out. It will be hard to overtake here and like you can see from qualifying it is very close, I expect the same during the race. If we can have a good start like in Malaysia then we can achieve a good result. We will all sit down and work through this evening to make sure we are as prepared as possible for the race.”

Japanese GP Qualifying

08/10/16
Valtteri Bottas qualified 11th and Felipe Massa 12th for the Japanese Grand Prix
Both cars progressed from Q1 into Q2 after two runs on the soft tyre, with Valtteri advancing in P5 and Felipe making it through in P10 after their second runs
Valtteri and Felipe only had one run in Q2 on the soft tyre. Both of their laptimes were provisionally good enough to progress to Q3 but as others followed them across the line on an improving track, Valtteri and Felipe fell to P11 and P12.
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: It’s disappointing to be 11th and 12th and not make it through to Q3. However, what we can see is that our drivers are evenly matched and we’ve got most of what we could have out of today. The car just wasn’t quick enough. It’s going to be more about the race around here and we can definitely have a good strategy from where we are. We’ve got the car set up with a good compromise for all conditions, so whatever the weather brings we will be prepared. We’ve got to look forward now and get as many points as we can tomorrow.

Vijay Mallya on Japan

VJM: “We head to Suzuka off the back of a very strong weekend in Sepang. Scoring twelve points strengthened our fourth place in the championship and showed, once again, that the VJM09 is a car that is competitive on any kind of circuit. I think we were a little unlucky with how the race unfolded, but we made the most of the situation and came away with some important points. It means we can arrive in Suzuka confident of another competitive performance. The team is working extremely hard, the drivers are extracting the performance from the car, and we are looking forward to the challenge that awaits us this weekend.” [Read More!]

MALAYSIAN GP – RACE

2 OCTOBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: WINNER! Start Position: 4th
“What a day, I’m feeling a bit emotional and overwhelmed! It’s been a long time between drinks! A couple of weeks ago I said we’d win a race this year but to be honest I didn’t expect a win to come at this circuit. This is probably the sweatiest race to win and do a shoey, but for me it’s not so bad, I felt a bit sorry for the others though having to drink from my shoe, but the crowd was encouraging me! We had an opportunity today that we needed to capitalise on and I was determined to not let it go. We had a good battle with Max, he is a hard racer and we have that in common. We fought hard and aggressive but I think we showed we can push to the limit but still keep it on the track. We had a fair and clean fight and I think we both enjoyed it. My tyres were a little more tired than his but I was going to hold him off as long as I could. When the Virtual Safety Car came out and we both came into the pits for new tyres, that made me a little more comfortable for the last stint. This year has been an awesome year of progression for the team. We started the year a step higher from last year and kept going and getting better, and it really is amazing to win at this circuit. I want to thank the team for making this all possible and I’m very grateful for today. After Monaco I had a lot of mixed emotions and it was a hard one to take but I felt as a team we came through that stronger and better. I want to thank my parents and my sister as well for the support they gave me growing up. I also want to dedicate the win to Jules (Bianchi), I have been waiting for a victory to dedicate to him. My life definitely changed since that incident and I am extremely grateful and appreciative of everything I’ve got.”

Formula 1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix – Race – Sunday

02.10.2016
Weather: sunny and dry, 33-34°C air, 49-55°C track

The Sauber F1 Team finished the Malaysian Grand Prix, the hottest race of the season, with one remarkable athletic performance and one retirement because of a technical issue: Marcus
Ericsson’s drinking system stopped working after the first of 56 laps with cockpit temperatures up to 60 degrees. Nevertheless, he managed to finish in P12. Felipe Nasr was running in P13 when he had issues with the brake-by-wire system, which forced him to retire on lap 47. The Japanese Grand Prix will take place next weekend in Suzuka.

2016 MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 02/10/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 11th
“We were so close to the points! It was quite an eventful race right from the start, which was what we needed. My start was also very stressful, as I was doing a clutch warming when I arrived to the grid and the engine suddenly stopped! I managed to turn it back on and it was just as the lights went out… So my start wasn’t great because of this, but I then did a mega job at Turn 1 and overtook five or six cars! From then on we tried to follow the opposite strategy to many others – when the first Virtual Safety Car was deployed we decided to stay out, which was a bit risky, but meant we were fighting for the points positions! In the end, we did a good race and if we didn’t end up in the points it’s because we just didn’t have the pace, not because we didn’t try. We will of course keep working and I now look forward to Japan, a race that has become one of my favourites after enjoying it for the first time last year. I also can’t wait to meet all those amazing Japanese fans again, they definitely give you an extra boost!”

Sergio Perez confirms his plans to stay at Sahara Force India have been finalised

Sergio Perez: “I’m pleased to confirm that I will be racing with Sahara Force India in 2017 as the team and my supporters have concluded their agreements. I’m very happy with this team and I have a good feeling for the future. I’ve seen the progress we’ve made over last couple of years and I’m sure we have the potential to achieve even more going forward. The team knows me well and it’s important to have stability, especially with some big rule changes planned for next year. I’m excited for the rest of this season and for the challenge that awaits all of us in 2017. I thank all the team for believing in me and I will do my best repay their faith with points, podiums and hopefully wins. I also want to thank our Mexican partners, especially Telmex and Telcel, who have been supporting me since I was a young boy. They continue to play an important role in my journey through the sport.”

Malaysian GP Qualifying

1/10/16
Felipe Massa qualified 10th and Valtteri Bottas 11th for the Malaysian Grand Prix.
Both cars easily advanced from Q1 to Q2 after setting one timed lap each on new soft tyres, one-tenth apart, with Valtteri finishing P8 and Felipe P9.
The first laps in Q2 saw both drivers qualify as high as P5 on softs. As the rest of the field crossed the line, Felipe dropped to P7 and Valtteri out of the top ten. He attempted a second lap, but didn’t improve and qualified P11 - just 0.4-seconds short of progressing into Q3.
In Q3, Felipe completed two flying laps. The first put him P7, but he couldn’t improve on his second run and qualified in tenth position.

MALAYSIAN GP – QUALIFYING

30 OCTOBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 3rd, 1:33.420 (Practice 3 – P2 1:34.879)
“I thought it was going to be a tough race for us before we came here. Now it seems like the balance of the car is there, the long runs seem good and we have improved our short run pace a lot. We were pretty close to the Mercedes on the front row and I’m really enjoying the new surface here, the car is working very well on it. For both of us to be on the second row, in front of Ferrari, means we can be very pleased with today’s work. Out of the past three or four races this has been my best long run pace on a Friday, we haven’t changed much on the car so it should be similar tomorrow. After Singapore I talked with the team and we changed some things on the car and it seems to have worked, hopefully we can keep improving in this way. We have made some changes to the clutch so we shall see if it has improved tomorrow, so far everything looks positive. The set up feels really good here and we will no doubt check everything tonight to make sure we are in the best position possible on race day.

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:35.695, (Q2) 1:35.369, pos. 15th
“Not an easy qualifying. We managed to get through to Q2 where we had clean laps but no pace, which made it difficult to fight for higher positions. It was very close between Carlos and I but, to be honest, we were just fighting each other today… It’s quite a tough situation as the car is missing speed here and I think we extracted the most out of the car but it’s just not our track. A P15 shouldn’t be what we aim for but right now this is where we are. For tomorrow, our long-run pace doesn’t look that bad, but overtaking here is a difficult task still, so we will see what we can come up with. The good thing is that this new tarmac offers some different opportunities which we will have to analyse overnight. It won’t be easy but we will certainly try our best!”
