Renault Sport Formula One Team endured a tough qualifying for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix at the Baku City Circuit. Nico Hülkenberg set the fourteenth fastest time, however an electrical issue precluded him from completing the Q2 session.
Nico had earlier set the eleventh fastest time in FP3. Jolyon Palmer had to sit out qualifying after his car suffered from fire damage in FP3. The fire was extinguished, however the damage caused required an engine change which could not be completed in time for the session.

AZERBAIJAN GRAND PRIX – “TOMORROW IT CAN BE CLOSER”

Scuderia Ferrari drivers confident about the race

Baku, June 24th – Scuderia Ferrari drivers managed to lock out the second row of the grid for tomorrow’s Azerbaijan Grand Prix after an eventful P3 session, in which our mechanics did another splendid job of rebuilding Seb’s car after a precautionary engine change, following a hydraulic issue.

“OUR EMPHASIS IS ON TOMORROW”
With significant engine penalties for both drivers, and on a circuit not best suited to the strengths of our car, today’s qualifying session was always going to be somewhat disappointing.
Fernando Alonso set the 16th-fastest time in Q1, but will start from 20th position. His team-mate Stoffel Vandoorne lines up 19th.
The team has placed extra emphasis on race performance, and with the weekend so far littered with incident, we’re hopeful of making progress in what promises to be a long and eventful race around the streets of Baku.

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:42.927, (Q2) 1:43.186, pos. 11th
“I think the only way of getting into Q3 today was by managing to get a massive tow or slipstream from someone, like what happened to me in Q1 – that was a mega lap that put me P5! In Q2 I didn’t get the chance to do this again, but I enjoyed some clean laps. I’m satisfied with P11. For tomorrow, you can never be 100% confident about anything here in Baku, but we will obviously try and do our best and see where we finish.”

24 JUNE 2017
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 5th, 1:41.879 (Practice 3 – P6 1:43.614)
“The car felt very good during qualifying, I struggled a bit to get the tyres working in sector one but everything else felt like it was going in the right direction. I think we realistically had a shot at P3 today, which on this track would have been a fantastic result. The Red Flag didn’t really have an impact on me, I had just about completed my fast lap and then had a chance for one lap when the session was restarted, just like everyone else. On my final lap in Q3 I was going about three tenths quicker than my best time but then I lost gear sync in the second sector, it cost me a couple of tenths which was frustrating and meant we could not challenge for third. I’m hopeful we can get on top of these issues overnight and be ready for tomorrow. Once again Mercedes have made a big step today so I don’t think we can get close to them but we will be looking to challenge Ferrari come the race. It would be great to get on the podium and that is the goal.”

Azerbaijan Grand Prix - A day spent learning

Kimi and Seb 4th and 5th at the end of P2

Baku, June 23rd – The first day of practice at Baku circuit is always interesting, with drivers using a lot of the run-off areas and trying out their reverse gear. The compromise between the fast and the twisty section means that, in the latter, drivers must rely heavily on mechanical grip – which is questionable on Friday. Different choices of set-up though, meant the times were very close. Kimi ended up fourth quickest with a 1min 43.489 seconds, while Seb recorded a best personal lap time of 1min 43.615s. MAX VERSTAPPEN
First Practice session: 1:44.410, Position: 1, Laps: 19
Second Practice Session: 1:43.362, Position: 1, Laps: 36
“The whole day has been really positive, except the last lap, everything has been working well. From lap one I felt comfortable in the car, it was handling really well and I was confident with the setup. I think the preparation we did at the factory and in the simulator has allowed us to come here with a strong setup and competitive car from the go. This has definitely been the most positive Friday of the year so far. In the second session I felt I couldn’t get the maximum out of the short run pace due to yellow flags and traffic so we can be very happy to still finish P1. It feels like the cars are quicker through the corners this year, this means if you have a lock up in can be more critical. We are confident heading into Qualifying but also wary that Mercedes will turn their engines up a bit. We are on top at the end of Friday which means they have to catch up so it will be exciting in the session tomorrow. At the end I locked up at turn 1, I could see I wasn’t going to make the corner so decided to take the run off, as I turned right I lost the rear and ended up sliding into the wall.”

Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: It was a pretty good day and we completed the intended programme. On Lance’s side that involved learning the circuit, as he’s not been here before and it’s quite a tricky track. I’m pleased to say that he drove very well. He progressively built up his pace and managed to put himself sixth in FP2, and he never went off the circuit, which makes him one of a few drivers who had a clean day. So it was a great job by Lance. Felipe did a number of tests for us, but was probably the worst off in terms of traffic throughout the day. It’s been a very scrappy day with a lot of yellow flags and a lot of traffic, so he wasn’t able to put a good lap together in FP2. But we got some good data from his long runs. It’s extremly competitive out there, with some other teams looking fast. So, we’ll work hard on understanding the performance of the car tonight to make sure that we’re in a strong position for qualifying tomorrow.

Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix – Practice – Friday

09.06.2017
Weather: Sunny/cloudy and dry, 21-25°C air, 28-38°C track

Friday’s training sessions at the Canadian GP did not pass without difficulties for the Sauber F1 Team. The team was unable, as yet, to find the right car setups for the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve for Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein. The two Sauber drivers completed 55 and 59 laps, respectively. For the third practice session and the qualifying, they are counting on improving their performance after analyzing the data collected today.

Paddy Lowe, Chief Technical Officer: It was a good day. We did all of the things that we wanted to do and we had no problems with either car. We have some new aerodynamic and mechanical parts here, and we were able to do all of the relevant testing for those, while completing our tyre programmes with Felipe and Lance. Felipe did a solid job all day, and showed really competitive pace on both high and low fuel. Lance’s main job, having never driven here before, was to learn the circuit; which he’s done very quickly. He’s shown reasonable pace for this stage of the weekend, and he hasn’t used the ultrasoft yet. There’s still a lot of work to do overnight to keep finding extra performance, but we’re hopeful we can have a good day tomorrow and score some points on Sunday.

First Practice session: 1:14.861, Position: 7, Laps: 19
Second Practice Session: 1:13.388, Position: 5, Laps: 25
“It wasn’t the cleanest of days but in terms of performance I think we were OK. Before the stoppage in P2 it was a positive session, we felt like we had good pace and weren’t far off the top four. This is nice to see at this track as it usually is not one of our favourites, we can be pleased with that I guess. The short runs were good and the updates seem to have given us something a little extra, with such long straights here it is always going to be difficult for us. We are not yet fast enough to beat the top two teams so we do our best to finish fifth and optimise what we have. We still need to investigate what the issue with the car was but I’m sure the boys will have it ready to go again tomorrow.”

Sahara Force India looks ahead to round seven of the 2017 season in Montreal, Canada.

Vijay Mallya: “I was naturally disappointed to see us leave Monaco empty-handed. Operationally we were strong and the car showed good pace, but sometimes the luck doesn’t go your way and there’s nothing you can do.

“The positives we take from Monaco leave us feeling optimistic for Canada. The car is working well and we’ve made progress over the last few races. The confidence throughout the team continues to grow and we approach every race knowing we can fight for points. It’s important we get back into our rhythm in Montreal and build on our strong start to the year.”
