Gené: "Great to be back on a real track "

Barcelona, 18th November - After numerous laps driven wit the simulator and on the Vairano straight for tests of the aero package, Marc Gené is back behind the wheel of a Formula 1 single-seater on areal race track. Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro's official test driver, who was also engaged in other things over the last year [Peugeot driver in the prototype category and Formula 1 commentator on Sky Italia] was happy about the opportunity to drive on his home track: "It's great to taste the Ferrari again on this track. I've worked a lot with this car at Vairano, but a test like this is something completely different. I don't have a huge mileage, because we have to keep in mind that we're close to the 30,000 km limit we can use in 2008; but it's great to be here."

Both continued the work they had started yesterday. While Luca is working on the engine's and the gearbox's reliability, Marc dedicated his tests to the set up and the slicks. The difference in their programs could also be seen in the laps driven: Marc has a limited mileage available, so he just did nine laps in the morning before the lunch break, while Luca already drove 69. These are the best lap times by the two Ferraristi: 1.22.425 for the Italian and 1.22.898 for the Spaniard.

Constant change.

The BMW Sauber F1.08 over the course of the season.

Munich/Hinwil, 13 November 2008. There is a rule of thumb in Formula 1: Standing still means going backwards. Vehicles change from race to race. The engineers are continually modifying the vehicles depending on the characteristics of the different circuits – the extremely long straights in Monza require a different aero package than the tight and slow corners in Monaco. Willy Rampf, the Technical Director of the BMW Sauber F1 Team, uses a selection of technical drawings to describe the constant change undergone by the BMW Sauber F1.08.

Raikkonen: Ferrari won again!

Maranello, 5th November - The season is over and this is the verdict: Ferrari won again! The last race was a mirror for the Championship. We were really strong and we gained an excellent result, but not the perfect one. The most important thing is that the Team gained the Constructors' World Title; the most realistic goal we could reach in this last race. It's a very important result for all who work for or are part of the world of Ferrari: the people from the Scuderia, our partners, and more above all Stefano Domenicali, during his first year as Team Principal. It's also a little victory for me, at the end of a difficult and complicated season. It's good to win after such a year; it shows how united the Team has been and that we have fought right until the end. My hopes ended up in smoke at Spa and Monza. From then on I tried to gain as many points as possible for the Team and I tried to understand how to improve things for the next year.

Lewis Q&A post Brazil

4th November 2008

Lewis, you’ve won the most spectacular world championship ever – you must be in a total daze.
“The last two laps were the toughest two laps of my entire career because the stakes were just so high. I was pushing and pushing to close the gap to Sebastian but it wasn’t easy because my car wasn’t feeling great: I had no rear tyres left, so I just couldn’t get close enough.
“Then, as I was in Turn 10, the team told me over the radio that Timo was just ahead and was struggling on dry tyres. Through Turn 11 I saw Sebastian pass him and, just as Timo was about to turn in, I dived down the inside and made it through. It felt like ages to hear from the team – but they came on the radio line after I crossed the finish line to tell me I was world champion. I was exhausted but ecstatic.”

Brazilian Grand Prix Debrief - Q+A with Timo Glock

How did the rain at the end of the race affect your strategy?

In the final laps we saw that we had the opportunity to make up some places due to the rain. It started to rain lighty on parts of the circuit with around six laps to go and at that stage everyone was on dry tyres. We took the decision to stay out on dry tyres even though the intensity of the rain was increasing we were sure we could make up positions when the other cars pitted for wet weather tyres and because it was only on the last couple of laps that the wet tyre was superior. We stayed out and I was up to fourth but it was not easy in those conditions in the last laps.

Brazilian GP - For a Few Metres!

Interlagos, 2nd November - Felipe Massa won his home Grand Prix and Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro has won the 2008 Formula 1 Constructors' World Championship. And the other big winner on the day was the sport of motor racing, as this final round of the season was thrilling from start to finish, thanks to a sudden shower at the start and another one in the closing laps. In fact for a few moments on the very last lap, Felipe Massa looked to have secured the Drivers' crown as Sebastian Vettel and Timo Glock relegated Lewis Hamilton to sixth. However, in the very last metres, the Englishman got past the Toyota to retake fifth place, enough to give the McLaren-Mercedes man the Drivers' crown, by one single point. For the record, Felipe won six races this year to Lewis' five. Kimi Raikkonen came home in third place.

LEWIS HAMILTON - 2008 FIA FORMULA 1 WORLD CHAMPION

Vodafone McLaren Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton is the 2008 FIA Formula 1 World Champion.

In one of the most dramatic finishes to a world championship ever, Lewis took the title by a single point after securing fifth position on the final corner of the final lap of the final race of the 2008 season. Lewis finished the year with 98 points, one point ahead of Ferrari’s Felipe Massa, who won his home race at Interlagos this afternoon.

Heikki Kovalainen finished seventh - a result that helped the Vodafone McLaren Mercedes team to second in the constructors’ championship with 151 points. Ferrari amassed a winning total of 172 points.

At the age of just 23 years, 10 months and 26 days, Lewis is the youngest champion in Formula 1 history. He takes McLaren’s 12th drivers’ world title, and the third for the McLaren Mercedes partnership, which won the drivers’ title in 1998 and ’99 with Mika Häkkinen.

2008 Brazilian Grand Prix Race Report

2 November 2008 - The Force India Formula One Team suffered a frustrating end to its debut season in today's Brazilian Grand Prix. Points looked tantalisingly close for Giancarlo Fisichella, who had made an inspired early call to change to dry tyres on lap two following the heavy rain on the grid. The Italian was catapulted up the field to third position when the rest of the field pitted some five laps later and he held a points scoring finish until his first pit stop on lap 38. An undetected clutch problem however led to two stalls in the pit and Giancarlo dropped from the sharp end of the field to the rear. Undeterred, he continued to push until the end to finish a disappointing 18th.
Adrian Sutil put in a steady performance in the chaotic rain-soaked race, making no mistakes in the changing conditions. The German finished his second season of F1 in 16th overall.

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX – RACE

SUNDAY 2 NOVEMBER, 2008
In front of packed grandstands, today’s Brazilian Grand Prix at Interlagos delivered a thrilling Championship decider and produced a new British World Champion in Lewis Hamilton. Predicted rain fell earlier than anticipated when a heavy shower drenched parts of the circuit before the formation lap and delayed the start by ten minutes. Both AT&T Williams drivers were subsequently caught up in a first corner incident prompted by the wet conditions, although neither suffered terminal damage. From 18th on the grid, Nico Rosberg climbed six places over the course of the race, finishing the last Grand Prix of 2008 in 12th. Driving an accident damaged FW30, Kazuki Nakajima crossed the line in 17th place. Congratulations to Lewis Hamilton on his maiden Drivers’ crown and to Ferrari for another victory in the Constructors’ Championship.
