2009 MALAYSIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Lewis Hamilton
“Firstly, we shouldn’t get carried away by our podium in Australia. Yes, we had a fantastic race but we’re all aware that our car isn’t capable of repeating that sort of performance on sheer pace alone. And Sepang is one of the tougher tracks on the calendar, one where we will probably be further from the frontrunners than we were in Albert Park. The track is both fast and technical so requires good mechanical and aero grip. It’s much more aero-dependent and rear-limited than Melbourne so it may highlight some of the shortcomings in MP4-24. Nevertheless, we’re all really encouraged by the progress we’ve made and I know we’ll be pushing as hard as ever to put more points on the board in Sepang.”

Australian GP Race

29 March 09
The AT&T Williams team didn’t manage to fulfil its potential in a typically incident-packed opening race in Melbourne today, and had to content itself with a handful of points and a fastest race lap to take to next weekend’s Malaysian GP. With the cars running in the top five and both drivers showing some committed overtaking manoeuvres, the team’s march was interrupted by a problem in Nico’s first pitstop on lap 16. Shortly afterwards, Kazuki had a high-speed spin, hitting the wall and retiring. From here Nico fought to recover lost ground, in the process setting the fastest lap of the race and collected two points for a seventh place finish.

He enjoyed a combative race to emerge in the points during his final stint and benefited from the late race incidents. Having secured three points, the team now turns its attention to next week’s Malaysian Grand Prix determined to deliver a more competitive performance.

MARTIN WHITMARSH – team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“A gearbox problem for Lewis in Q1 – probably a broken dog ring but we'll have to investigate it to know for sure – prevented him from setting as quick a time as he might otherwise have been able to, but at least he got through to Q2 even if he was unable to take part in it. Heikki's first quick lap in Q2 was solid - but his next fast lap was quicker in sectors one and two but unfortunately not quicker in sector three. He therefore missed out on getting through to Q3 – by less than half a second.

Australian Grand Prix - Qualifying Round-Up

Saturday 28 March 2009
Panasonic Toyota Racing will have two cars in the top 10 when the Australian Grand Prix kicks off the 2009 Formula 1 season. On another clear, sunny day at Albert Park in Melbourne, with track temperatures of 29-33°C and air temperatures of 24-25°C, Timo Glock claimed sixth place on the grid with Jarno Trulli two places further back in eighth. With medium and super soft Bridgestone Potenza compounds on offer, both drivers used the softer option to progress through Q1 and Q2 as the whole grid was able to compare outright performance for the first time with the 2009-specification cars. Q3, with all cars carrying the amount of fuel they will start the race with, was predictably tense and the two Toyotas used the super soft tyres in the final seconds to set their fastest times.

Massa: "starting from zero"

Melbourne, 26 March - Another season gets underway with yet another FIA press conference and Felipe Massa joined Kubica, Button and Vettel on stage at the Albert Park circuit this afternoon. Felipe, sporting his winter-grown goatee beard, was naturally cautious about his hopes for the coming season, despite the fact that the journalists always expect the drivers to be able to tell the future. "At the moment we start from zero," pointed out the Ferrari man. "All twenty drivers start from the same point, all of us fighting to win the championship. Only later in the year will it come down to a battle between two or three or five guys."

Australian Grand Prix Preview Q+A with Pascal Vasselon

Are you satisfied with the TF109 so far?
We can only be satisfied with what has happened so far with the TF109. Our winter season programme went extremely well in terms of reliability and mileage. We have been able to complete a huge number of laps before the race season starts; in fact we are very close to what we did last year with two cars, despite the restrictions we have this season. In terms of reliability we are very happy even if we are working hard to fix some small issues, as is always the case with a new car. In terms of performance as well we are satisfied, although obviously we are looking forward to seeing the pecking order when the racing starts. We have a quiet confidence we should be able to fight close to the front at the beginning of the season.

Statement from FOTA Chairman Luca di Montezemolo

17 March 2009 With regard to the decisions taken today by the FIA World Council, FOTA would like to express its disappointment and concern at the fact that these have been taken in a unilateral manner. The framework of the regulations as defined by the FIA, to be applicable as from 2010, runs the risk of turning on its head the very essence of Formula 1 and the principles that make it one of the most popular and appealing sports.

Q&A with Dr Vijay Mallya

Force India is now entering its second year in the championship. How do you intend to build on the first season?
When we started as Force India at the beginning of the 2008 season we were quite pleased with the progress we made, we were midfield until we got to Europe. We showed some early gains and I was encouraged by the progress, but then in comparison to other teams I think it's fair to say that we flattened out. I am not saying we didn't improve, as I have often heard people say that Force India is perhaps the most improved team in the paddock, but clearly we did not improve enough.

Q&A with Tonio Liuzzi

Tonio, you're staying with the team for a second season, again as the test and reserve driver. What are your feelings on this?
It will be an interesting season. Unfortunately the rules this year do not favour test drivers very much, both pre-season and during the season, but I am still really looking forward to it. There have been many changes in the regulations, both on the technical and aerodynamic side, with new systems such as KERS and also slick tyres being used, so it will be a difficult year for everybody as it will change the field a lot. I am excited about this as, from a driver perspective, it's a new challenge with lots of new things to discover and develop.

Q&A with Giancarlo Fisichella

This season will be your 14th in the championship. Are you still excited to be in F1? What keeps your motivation going?
It's not a difficult question to answer - I still love this job, I like driving F1 cars and I am passionate about motorsport. Plus I am very confident in this new car and with the new partnership with McLaren and Mercedes. It is a very exciting opportunity for the team, and that in itself is enough to keep me motivated. Our car is ready quite late relative to the others, and I am looking forward to getting my hands on it. I want to drive the car as soon as possible.

Q&A with Adrian Sutil

It's been a very long winter break this year, particularly with very little testing for you! How do you feel about getting back in the car?
I had a good winter break and I feel happy and confident. It was very good to switch off a bit and be at home, but now it's definitely time to start again. I had very little testing after Brazil, just one and a half days, and now I am getting really tired of this break - I want to go back to work. I feel refreshed, eager to do some good lap times and I am counting down the days, hours and minutes right now!
