Sauber F1 Team will not appeal

Hinwil, 29.3..2011 - After examining all the facts, the Sauber F1 Team has decided not to appeal against the verdict of the stewards following the Australian Grand Prix last Sunday. The two drivers Sergio Pérez and Kamui Kobayashi had crossed the finish line in Melbourne in seventh and eighth places respectively, but were subsequently excluded from the results. The post-race scrutineering check by the race stewards revealed that a radius on the upper rear wing element on Pérez’ and Kobayashi’s cars contravened the regulations by a few millimetres.

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX REVIEW

Vitaly: “We can be proud of our result”

Vitaly, congratulations: your first Formula One podium in your 20th grand prix start. Tell us how you are feeling right now?
I feel ecstatic. It was a great feeling to be standing on the podium in front of my team, especially knowing what we have all been through over the winter with some very difficult moments. It shows that all the hard work and effort was worth it and I have to say thanks to everyone for giving me such a great car. I feel really good and I know we can have a great season.

Renault RS27 engine takes win in Australia with Red Bull Racing

Renault Sport F1 had a perfect start to the season, as Red Bull Racing’s Sebastian Vettel, powered by the Renault RS27 engine, took a dominant victory from pole position in the Australian Grand Prix, held at Melbourne’s Albert Park circuit. After 58 laps the reigning world champion finished over 22 seconds ahead of Lewis Hamilton to take the championship lead. Renault’s strong form continued as Vitaly Petrov drove a faultless race to put his Lotus Renault GP – also powered by the RS27 – into third position, giving Renault two of the three podium positions.

Australian GP - Four more points for Felipe

Melbourne, 27 March – Following post race scrutineering, the two Saubers of Sergio Perez and Kamui Kobayashi have been disqualified because of a technical irregularity linked to the rear wing. This means that Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro driver Felipe Massa moves up from ninth to seventh in the classification of the Australian Grand Prix, thus bringing home an additional four points, which moves Ferrari up to third place in the Constructors’ Championship.

The Formula 1 circus will be back in action in a fortnight’s time, on 10 April, at the Sepang circuit in Malaysia.

AUSTRALIAN GRAND PRIX QUALIFYING

Today’s inaugural qualifying of the 2011 season concluded in Q2 for both AT&T Williams drivers. In the first qualifying session of his Formula One career, Pastor Maldonado eased through Q1 and was lapping consistently until yellow flags impeded the first of two quick laps in Q2. Pastor’s last opportunity to set a fast time was then aborted due to a flat spot on his tyre. A final lap time of 1:26.768 puts Pastor in P15. Rubens was unable to convert strong form shown in practice into a competitive grid position as he lost control of his FW33 on his first lap in Q2 leaving him beached in the gravel at turn 3. With no Q2 time set, Rubens will start tomorrow’s race in P17.

Australian GP - Many laps, many questions

Albert Park, 25 March - Before coming to Melbourne, we already knew that this year’s Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro car was reliable, thanks to an impressive mileage accumulated over the fifteen days of testing in Spain. So, no surprise then that Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa racked up over one hundred laps between them in today’s two free practice sessions. However, any questions relating to the pecking order among the twelve teams remain unanswered on a day best described as confusing, not least because of cool conditions and the occasional shower of light rain. Add in the fact that this semi-permanent track is also a bit green and dirty on the first day and clearly, the engineers will have a tough task analysing all the data from today, in order to prepare for the rest of the weekend.

Australian GP - Delayed verdict. The 2011 season gets underway in Melbourne

On the opening day of the Formula 1 World Championship, Ferrari chose to show solidarity with the Japanese people, who have been so seriously affected by the earthquake and subsequent tsunami that hit a fortnight ago. Therefore the two 150° Italia cars carried a phrase in Japanese and the country’s national flag. During today’s three hours of free practice, the Scuderia Ferrari Marlboro drivers completed a total of 102 laps, split between 48 for Fernando Alonso and 54 for Felipe Massa.

Team Lotus Australian GP FP1 / FP2 Report

Karun Chandhok: "I'm obviously disappointed to have had such a short run for my first time in the Team Lotus car, but I put my hands up to it and totally accept it was a combination of a slippery track and less grip than I expected from the tyres that combined to put me out so early. Q&A WITH SAM MICHAEL, TECHNICAL DIRECTOR

TUESDAY 15 MARCH, 2011
Q: How has winter testing gone and how confident are you in the design of the FW33?
SM: We had a few reliability problems during winter testing but none of the problems we had were major, except perhaps those on KERS that have now been addressed. Some small faults caused some downtime, but that is the result of having such tightly integrated systems on F1 cars now. Encouragingly, we haven’t had any issues with the new conceptual areas that we pushed the boundaries on, like the driveshafts. We have successfully completed 4969.2 kilometres during winter testing.

TEAM LOTUS T04 BARCELONA REVIEW - 11 / 03 / 11

HEIKKI KOVALAINEN: "That is obviously a fantastic end to the tests. Everyone in the team has put in a lot of hard work and days like today are the reward. Completing a double-race distance has given us the chance to make a lot of progress on track and we have accumulated a huge amount of data that will be very helpful in Australia, Malaysia and China. I'm not only pleased with the mileage we've done today, i'm also pleased with the pace we've shown. It's too early to make predictions but I think we'll go to Melbourne and have a good chance to taking the step forward we want to. A good day!"

Q&A WITH PASTOR MALDONADO

FRIDAY 11 MARCH, 2011
Q: How did your first test day go in Barcelona this week?
Pastor Maldonado: We had a KERS problem which unfortunately cost a few hours’ track time and we only did two short runs. It is better for the problems to come out now though than on a race weekend; that is what testing is for. We have a new aero package here as well, with more upgrades to come in Australia, so I am keen to get back in the car to try them out.

DAVIDE VALSECCHI: “First I want to thank Team Lotus for the opportunity to drive the car today. It was a great experience and one I want to build on with the team. To begin with it was obviously all new to me - new seat, more power, better brakes, the whole package, but by the end of the morning I was much more confident in the car and had the chance to push. By the time the morning session ended I think the team were pretty happy with how I performed so I can't really ask for more than that. It's definitely been a good day."
