Brazilian GP - Podium dreams fail to come true

Interlagos, 27 November – A “logical” result according to Scuderia Ferrari’s Pat Fry, but there is still room for emotion in this high-tech sport, so everyone in the team was hoping, against logic, for something a bit better than the fourth and fifth places that Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa brought home at the end of the 71 lap season finale. Going into the nineteenth and final round, the Spaniard had a theoretical chance of finishing in the silver medal position in the Drivers’ Championship, but instead he is in the same place as his race finish. As for Felipe, a home race and his hundredth with the Scuderia were two good reasons to hope for a fairytale ending to his tenth season in the sport.

Brazilian GP - Just off the podium. Alonso: "Proud of the team anyway"

Twenty two points for Scuderia Ferrari in the final race of the season, through a fourth place for Fernando Alonso and a fifth for Felipe Massa. Despite the adverse weather forecast, the race was run entirely in the dry. The two Ferrari men ran different strategies, but the difference was more down to circumstance than to choice, given that Felipe had one less set of Soft tyres than his team-mate. The result of this race means Fernando has dropped off the last podium position in the Drivers’ Championship to finish fourth, while Felipe ends the year sixth.

All afternoon the car felt great and we managed to make the most of the performance we put in yesterday in qualifying. I had another great start today, they’ve really been excellent for some time now, and from there I got straight into a good rhythm right throughout the whole race. I had a few issues with the blue flags towards the end, with so many cars coming around it kind of messes with your own race, but that’s just something you have to deal with. All year we’ve kept on progressing and we’ve finished on a real high with that tenth place so we’re set us up perfectly for next year where we can take another step forward in the development of this team.”

Brazilian GP - Fry: “next year we need to give our drivers a better car”

Interlagos, 26 November – As darkness and a few spots of rain settled on the Interlagos circuit, the Scuderia’s technical director, Pat Fry took a break from his work to talk to the media in the Ferrari hospitality area. As a difficult season comes to a close, the most pressing question was what Fry and his team were doing to ensure next year is much better. “I think we have learned a lot from this year and I have had to learn how the team works once I joined it,” began the Englishman. “Within our team, there are certain things that work very well and others that have not. At the moment we are trying to concentrate on those areas that need improving. We have made some changes in the aerodynamic department and I feel that has been successful as the work we are doing is more creative than before. Now we must see if we can deliver the goods, but as always we will not know exactly how successful we have been until the cars roll out in Melbourne next year.”

Brazilian GP - From Melbourne to Sao Paolo the circle is completed. Alonso fifth and Massa seventh in qualifying at Interlagos

For Scuderia Ferrari, the result of the final qualifying session of the 2011 season ended in almost identical fashion to the very first one: in Melbourne’s Albert Park, Fernando Alonso qualified fifth and Felipe Massa was eighth, while this afternoon in Interlagos, the Spaniard again recorded the qualifying position he has started from most often this year, nine times in total, while the Brazilian went one better than back then, which will see him start from the clean side of the grid. Tyre useage through the session was as follows: Fernando used two sets of Medium tyres in Q1, one of Soft in Q2 and two Soft in Q3, all of them new. After a first run on Medium in Q1, Felipe went out as a precautionary measure on a set of Softs, which he then used again for his first run in Q2. Here he had to make use of a second set, thus finding himself with just one set of new tyres for Q3, which led to him opting for just a single timed lap.

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX 2011 - FP3 & QUALIFYING

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - Chassis T128-04: “That is a great way to end qualifying for the season, one of the really good laps. I’ve had a lot of good sessions this year but that really stands out as one of the best. Jarno has been strong here all weekend and I was just behind him after the first runs so I had to really pull out everything to beat him. We made a couple of adjustments to the tyres and it paid off with that final lap with seconds left on the clock. We’ve also finished here closer to the opposition than we have all season, and even though it’s a shorter lap here it’s still a very good sign that we’ve found quite a bit of time with the new rear wing and I think that will help us again tomorrow. The forecast looks like rain and that always makes it interesting around here, so I think whatever happens it’ll be a good Sunday, and hopefully a great way to end the season.”

Brazilian GP - The usual Friday scenario in Interlagos

For Scuderia Ferrari, the final Friday of the 2011 season ran to the same plot it has followed throughout this final part of the season: a first session given over mainly to development of new components for next year, the second one revolving chiefly around preparation of the car for qualifying and the race. The only difference to many of these Fridays was the opportunity to evaluate two sets of additional tyres Pirelli supplied as part of its 2012 preparation. Both Ferrari men completed a lot of kilometres, with the local man Felipe Massa doing two laps more than a Grand Prix distance at this track (71) while his team-mate stopped ten laps from the theoretical chequered flag.

The 19th Friday of 2011

So that was it then, the final Friday fling of 2011. For Scuderia Toro Rosso, it was another three driver-two car day, so a lot of work to get through and fortunately, yet again, as part of its 2012 development plan, Pirelli supplied some experimental Hard compound tyres for all drivers to assess today, as well as the Medium and Soft compounds that will be used for the rest of the weekend. So there was no shortage of rubber to restrict our laps. After ninety minutes in the morning, it was time to say au revoir to Jean-Eric Vergne, as “Jev” completed his final Friday morning stint with us, taking over Sébastien Buemi’s car. The Swiss driver slipped into the cockpit in the afternoon, to record the fifteenth fastest time of the day, one place ahead of Jaime Alguersuari in the other TR6.

It was a very proud moment for me to be back on track in Interlagos, this time in an F1 car, a real dream come true, so I want to thank the whole team for the chance to drive here today. I’d had a good run in the car last week in Abu Dhabi so I felt comfortable pretty quickly, and I think my laptimes showed that. We worked through a busy programme, including comparisons with the new rear wing the team’s brought here against the previous spec we used in Abu Dhabi – I could feel immediately what a good step forward that is and I’m pleased I could play my part today in helping the team keep progressing, right up to the last race here in my home country.”

Firstly, Abu Dhabi – what went wrong for the team in the desert?
The result was not what we were looking for. We knew that the weekend would not be our finest of the season; the trend of slower tracks not suiting the R31 well repeated itself over the three days. For the race, we adopted differing strategies but neither one paid off. Our reliability problems did not help, either. The boys put in a big effort to try and give us something to smile about at the fantastic Yas Marina Circuit but unfortunately it was not to be. All eyes now to Brazil and what we hope will be a decent end to the season.

Both Sauber F1 Team drivers drove strong races at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix for which, in the end, one point was the reward. Kamui Kobayashi, who started 16th, came tenth at the penultimate round of the 2011 FIA World Championship, and today this was enough to defend the team’s seventh position in the constructors’ ranking. Sergio Pérez, who had qualified 11th, could not get the most out of his grid position because of a first lap incident, which forced him to pit early. Night time not the right time in the desert

At least Sauber only got one point – that was the overwhelming sentiment at the end of a weekend that went from bad to worse as surely as the Grand Prix itself went from light to dark. ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX 2011

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - Chassis T128-04: “Another pretty good start and from there the whole race was straightforward. I didn’t have any issues for the whole race, the pitstops were good and the strategy worked out exactly was we’d planned, so across the whole weekend this has been another strong event for us. What seems to be happening is that in the first couple of stints, as the race sort of settles down, we are able to keep up with the cars ahead, and that’s obviously a sign of how we have progressed, and that’s again what happened here. When we went onto the primes for the last stint the pace obviously dropped a bit but we had another strong push to the end, with Senna losing time on his final set of tyres, and that points to us being able to fight much more closely next year. For now we have one race left, so we’ll shift the focus now to Brazil and make sure we finish the season as strongly as we have been doing since Singapore.”

Abu Dhabi GP – A predictable qualifying: Ferrari 150° fifth and sixth on the grid

There were no surprises under the artificial lighting at the Yas Marina circuit, during qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The two 150º Italias will line up on the grid tomorrow afternoon on the third row, with Fernando Alonso fifth and Felipe Massa sixth: ahead of them it’s the usual suspects, namely Red Bull and McLaren. Even the way the three parts of the session panned out did not throw up any special excitement or surprises. Fernando did a run on the Mediums in Q1, one on Softs in Q2 and two more on the Soft tyres in Q3. Felipe used the same number of sets of tyres, but did one lap on the Softs right from Q1 in case of any threat coming towards the end: the Brazilian then used the same set of Softs in Q2 and the two remaining ones in Q3.

On the defensive

In a war, an army must be aware of its strengths and weaknesses, knowing when to attack and when it’s best to cut one’s losses and defend. And rest assured that Formula 1 is a war. So when our generals and foot soldiers arrived at the Yas Marina oasis in the deserts of Arabia, we knew this weekend would be one where defence and damage limitation might well be on the cards. In a fortnight’s time at the much quicker Interlagos circuit in Sao Paolo, it should be a very different situation and we can attack again.

Another record has fallen to newly-crowned champion Sebastian Vettel. The German driver equalled Nigel Mansell’s record of 14 pole positions in one season (from 1992) by going fastest in qualifying at the Yas Marina circuit, with a time of 1m38.481s. This was comfortably quicker than the time he set to take pole last year – 1m39.394s – before going on to win the championship.

AT&T WILLIAMS ABU DHABI GP QUALIFYING

It was a challenging day for the team at Abu Dhabi's Yas Marina circuit today. During practice earlier this afternoon, the team detected an oil leak on Rubens Barrichello's car which sidelined him for the second half of the session. Despite the team's efforts, a resolution to the issue was not found in time for qualifying forcing Rubens to sit out the session. With no time on the board, Rubens will start tomorrow's race from 23rd place. Pastor Maldonado classified 17th but has to serve a ten place grid penalty for using a ninth engine which drops him to 24th on the grid.

The Sauber F1 Team drivers, Sergio Pérez and Kamui Kobayashi, have qualified 11th and 16th

ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX 2011 FP3 & QUALIFYING

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - Chassis T128-04: “I am really pleased with that performance today. We definitely got as much performance as we could out of the car and to break into the 1.42s is very satisfying. I pretty much nailed the quick lap and I think we know that where we are on race pace gives us another chance of a strong finish tomorrow. I’m also looking forward to Brazil where we have an update to the rear wing coming – that should give us a better chance of using the DRS more effectively around the whole lap in qualifying, helping us get much closer to our race pace on Saturday afternoons, so another quick lap like that in Brazil with the update would be a great way to finish the qualifying sessions this season.”

Abu Dhabi GP - Several irons in the fire for the Scuderia

In the unusual and intriguing atmosphere of the Yas Marina circuit, where track action starts under the blinding light of the sun before going on to run under the floodlights, there was a busy first day of testing for the penultimate round of the 2011 season, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The increased work load can be ascribed partly to the two additional sets of tyres made available to each driver as part of Pirelli’s development programme for the 2012 season and also because of the work programme the Scuderia had planned for its two drivers. Fernando Alonso completed 45 laps of this circuit, missing out on the final part of the second session after he went off the track at Turn 1. Felipe Massa did 51 laps, in what were essentially two trouble free sessions.

McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton has emerged quickest with a time of 1m39.586s, set during the second session using Pirelli’s current P Zero Yellow soft tyre. Weather: dry, 28-26°C air, 41-28°C track
At the end of the first day of practice ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix the Sauber F1 Team drivers, Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez, were 10th and 11th respectively on the time sheet. Kobayashi lost a lot of track time in the first free practice session due to a gearbox problem, which was fixed without a new gear box being needed. In the second session both drivers not only ran the Pirelli soft and medium tyre compounds, but also two sets of test tyres each. The second free practice session on the Yas Marina Circuit took place at the same time as the race will be run on Sunday – starting at 5pm in daylight and finishing after sunset with a full moon contributing to the great atmosphere.

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - Chassis T128-04: “Not too bad at all. Both sessions were pretty straightforward and we kept making improvements all day. The car felt good on both sets of tyres – the track here has really good grip levels and the degradation on the softs was pretty low, certainly manageable, so that looks good for Sunday. The main thing is that our Fridays are now all solid, giving us the chance to really dial the cars in and that means we can work on maximising our pace on Saturday and Sundays, and you can see the evidence of that from our recent races.”

119 Laps

119 laps from three drivers was the outcome of the first day of practice for the penultimate round of this year’s Formula 1 World Championship for Scuderia Toro Rosso. After giving our two race drivers as much track time as possible at the new venue in India a fortnight ago, Jean-Eric Vergne was back on the scene, the Frenchman replacing Sébastien Buemi during Free Practice 1. The French media seemed to get terribly excited about this, especially as Lotus Renault gave another Frenchie, Romain Grosjean a run in their car this morning instead of Bruno Senna. That particular battle worked out in favour of our man who seems particularly keen to remind his national media that he is four years younger than Grosjean!

Race Preview Feature 18: 2011 Season Pit Stop Analysis

2011 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX
YAS MARINA CIRCUIT
11-13 NOVEMBER

The combination of DRS and Pirelli tyres has made 2011 a bumper year for Formula One, but not just in terms of on-track passing manoeuvres. The characteristics of the Pirelli tyres, designed to improve the racing, have also seen the total number of pit stops rise steeply - so far, there have been an average of 58 stops per race. Slick pit work has always been important in Formula One, but the frequency with which the pit crews have been in action this year has brought both speed and consistency to the fore.

2011 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX VIEW

Heikki Kovalainen, Car 20 - Chassis T128-04: “Two races left and we are going to two of the better circuits on the calendar. Abu Dhabi’s not a hugely challenging circuit to race on, but the timing of the sessions and the fact we are running as the light’s fading on Sunday makes it pretty cool for the fans and on TV.

Back to where it all began for Pirelli and the P Zero compounds

The Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi is a significant venue for Pirelli as it is where the teams got to try out the P Zero compounds for the very first time, at a test following last year’s grand prix.
That two-day test, along with other sessions carried out by Pirelli in Abu Dhabi, means that the 5.554-kilometre track is the place where Pirelli has the most Formula One experience – having tested a wide range of the P Zero tyres there in the past. For the penultimate grand prix of the season, Pirelli will bring the P Zero White medium tyre and P Zero Yellow soft tyre to Abu Dhabi, which should be well suited to the 21 corners and two straights that make up the lap.

Vijay’s vision
Team Principal and Managing Director, Dr. Vijay Mallya, reflects on an emotional Indian Grand Prix and looks forward to the penultimate race of the year.
The Indian Grand Prix weekend was obviously a huge one for you personally. How would you sum it up?
It was outstanding. It was emotional and there was a great sense of pride. It was a dream come true. When Force India became the first and only Indian team on the grid in 2008, it was a great moment for me too, but even at that time I really didn’t think that India would ever host a Grand Prix. It couldn’t be better, it was like the confluence of two dreams: owning an F1 team and racing on home turf. The icing on the cake was at least getting one car into the top ten and into the points.

ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Friday 11 to Sunday 13 November, 2011
Yas Marina Circuit, Abu Dhabi
Round: 18 of 19

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: Early preparation for the 55 lap Abu Dhabi race has gone well. The Yas Marina Circuit is a medium aerodynamic efficiency track, with a real mix of long straights and relatively tight, low mean speed corners, which in turn puts a great deal of energy through the braking system. We are expecting low 30¢ªC ambient temperatures with track temperatures rising into the low 40¢ªC so we will have to run a relatively 'open' cooling package. Fuel consumption at the race is medium to high, but the actual fuel effect on lap-time is average. Pirelli are bringing their medium and soft tyres to this race, with these tyres being last used together at the Japanese Grand Prix.

Abu Dhabi Grand Prixview

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be staged for only the third time this weekend and this will be the first time in its history that the Yas Marina Circuit does not host the final race of the season. Last year, the most spectacular facility on the calendar saw a nail biting finish to the World Championship, with Sebastian Vettel taking the title, despite never having led the Drivers’ classification prior to that final race. The German is in fact the only winner of this event and, the way 2011 has gone, you would not get good odds against the youngster taking an Abu Dhabi hat-trick on Sunday.

The 2011 Formula 1 World Championship visits Asia for the last time as Abu Dhabi hosts the penultimate Grand Prix of the season. It is the only day-night race on the calendar with proceedings getting underway at 17:00 local time as the sun sets. The Yas Marina circuit is a futuristic complex designed by Hermann Tilke, which combines tight corners with high-speed straights meaning that braking and traction will be key factors. The track is one of the few ones in the Championship to run anti-clockwise and provides a unique setting beside the sea with the impressive harbour and the five star Yas Marina Hotel located within the circuit itself.

Preview – Abu Dhabi Grand Prix

18th of 19 Rounds of the FIA Formula One World Championship, 11-13 November 2011

Hinwil, 4th November 2011 – While the top places in the FIA Formula One World Championship are already decided, the Sauber F1 Team still needs to pull out all the stops for the final two races. The Swiss team currently lies seventh in the Constructors’ Championship. After the most recent GP in India, Toro Rosso now ranks eighth with an equal number of points, while the sixth-placed team, Force India, has a ten-point lead. This means drivers Kamui Kobayashi and Sergio Pérez are both the hunters and hunted – and neither catching up nor defending are easy tasks. A reason for this is because further development of the effective exhaust-blown diffuser on the Sauber C30-Ferrari was halted in the summer, when this controversial technology was banned for a time. Despite the ensuing, increasing disadvantage compared to the competition, the team will continue to give of its best at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix from 11th to 13th November 2011 so it can secure the best possible position in the World Championship.
