No points oasis in the Bahrain desert

The Bahrain weekend was a rollercoaster ride in many ways. Firstly, the distraction of the “situation” in the country, and its portrayal in the media, cannot be denied. And on the technical front, we came here from China with more questions than answers, slowing turning the balance round in the days leading up to the Bahrain GP and validating new thinking throughout the three practice sessions as we figured out which of our Shanghai updates worked and how well. The amount of work involved, report documents that are about as thick as a good paperback and hours of analysis, is hard to comprehend, especially when, for the race team, it all has to be done on the hoof, travelling from Shanghai to Manama.

Down in the Dunes. 2012 Bahrain Grand Prix - The Race

Bahrain International Circuit, Sakhir, Bahrain
Sunday 22 April 2012

A tough race was predicted in Sakhir today and a tough race it was, as the Bahrain International Circuit dealt the Marussia F1 Team a tough battle with the tyres and, disappointingly, its first retirement in eight race starts.

Charles Pic started the race from P19 on the grid, with Timo displaced to P23 by penalties for drivers further up the field. True to form, Timo fought hard on the opening lap to make up the deficit and the two drivers were running in P19 and P20 respectively at that stage before settling into P20 and 21.

Bahrain GP - Damage limitation on a very sad day for the Scuderia

Only eight points in the bag for Scuderia Ferrari come the end of the Bahrain Grand Prix, the fourth round of this year’s World Championship. For the first time this season, both F2012s finished in the top ten: seventh was car number 5 in the hands of Fernando Alonso and in car number 6, Felipe Massa finished ninth. Both drivers made three stops: Soft-Medium-Medium-Medium was the run of tyres for Fernando, Soft-Medium-Soft-Medium for Felipe. After this first run of races outside Europe, Fernando Alonso finds himself fifth in the Drivers’ classification, ten points off the leader, while Felipe Massa is 17th. The Scuderia is fourth in the Constructors’ Championship.

2012 BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

“A pretty difficult weekend for the whole team”

MARTIN WHITMARSH, Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“Clearly, our performance was disappointing this afternoon.
Having said that, both Lewis and Jenson drove very well in extremely challenging conditions.
Lewis pulled off some sensational passing manoeuvres in his efforts to push his way through to the front, but in the end he was let down by two slow pitstops, both of which were caused by delays at the left-rear corner of his car. Jenson’s pitstops were trouble-free, by contrast, so we’ll have to investigate what the problem was with the left-rear corner of Lewis’s car.

Bahrain GP - Tyre testing in the heat of Bahrain

Coming from the Far to the Middle East has not changed much for Scuderia Ferrari, apart from the much higher temperatures on this island in the Persian Gulf, than in China. Therefore it looks like another weekend on the defensive for Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa, whose F2012s are practically identical to the way they were seven days ago in Shanghai. Today went off without any technical hitches and that meant the team was able to gather all the necessary information to be as well prepared as possible for tomorrow’s qualifying and Sunday’s race. The F2012 covered a total of 101 laps, equivalent to around 550 kilometres: 52 for Fernando, 49 for Felipe.

BAHRAIN GP PREVIEW

Friday 20 to Sunday 22 April, 2012, Sakhir, Bahrain
Round: 4 of 20

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: Having held the race on the longer endurance course layout in 2010, the 2012 race has now reverted back to the 5.412km long, 57 lap Grand Prix layout. One of the main problems imposed by this circuit is the very hot local ambient conditions of typically 35°C and track temperature rising into the high 40°C’s. These conditions force teams to open up the engine cooling bodywork which in turn can adversely affect the aerodynamic efficiency.

Bahrain Grand Prix from a tyre point of view: Bahrain, 20-22 April 2012

BAHRAIN TO HIGHLIGHT PERFORMANCE OF MEDIUM AND SOFT P ZERO
Milan, April 17, 2012 – Bahrain will be one of just three circuits that Pirelli is yet to visit in competition this year, but unlike Hockenheim in Germany and the United States Grand Prix, the Italian firm has experience of the Sakhir track through two tyre tests that were carried out there in December 2010 and January 2011, as Pirelli geared up to its Formula One return. On the first occasion, the test was interrupted by a sandstorm that blew sand onto the track and stopped the test car running: a situation that highlights one of the most prominent characteristics of the Middle Eastern circuit, which is located in the middle of the desert.

Bahrain Grand Prix Preview

This weekend sees Formula 1 return to the Sakhir Circuit, outside the Bahraini capital Manama, for the first time since 2010. In fact, the actual track layout was last used in 2009, because we are reverting to the older shape, as the longer one tried in 2010 did not prove popular or provide any more excitement.

A NEW CHAPTER IN THE HISTORY OF THE SILVER ARROWS

BRACKLEY/STUTTGART
16 APRIL 2012

In motorsport, there are days when the stars simply seem to align and everything comes together perfectly. Sunday in Shanghai was one of those days. Nico Rosberg won his first Grand Prix at his 111th attempt - 111 years (and three weeks) after the first ever Mercedes took victory at the 1901 Nice Speed Weeks. What's more, this year marks exactly three decades since Nico's father Keke became world champion - in a season that, just like 2012, saw three different winners of the first three races (on the road, at least, before the first two finishers in Brazil were disqualified for technical irregularities...)

Bahrain Grand Prix Preview

20th-22nd April 2012, Bahrain International Circuit - 57 laps - 5.412 km

Manama, Monday 16th of April 2012

It’s back-to-back races for the second consecutive time this season with the Championship stopping off in Bahrain. This will be the last event held far away from home before the teams head into the European swing of the season. HRT Formula 1 Team has progressed leaps and bounds since the season started down under and, with its own particular "preseason” completed, the Spanish outfit is now working more efficiently as a unit and faces the race in Bahrain much more settled and than in previous races. Without hardly any time for greater upgrades, the weather conditions and the track itself present another great challenge that Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan take on with great motivation.

Chinese GP - Without speed and traction you don't go far

Two disappointing points for Ferrari at Shanghai
Only two points to its name for Scuderia Ferrari come the end of the Chinese Grand Prix, brought home by Fernando Alonso, who finished the race in ninth place, while Felipe Massa was classified thirteenth. It is without a doubt a disappointing result, which came at the end of a race where the two drivers were practically always in traffic. After the third Grand Prix of the season, Fernando finds himself third in the Drivers’ classification, eight points off the leader, while Felipe is still on a blank score sheet. Tyre strategy the key to an action-packed Chinese Grand Prix

Nico Rosberg completed a perfect weekend for Mercedes, during which both the German driver and his ‘Silver Arrows’ team managed their allocation of the P Zero White medium tyre and P Zero Yellow soft tyre perfectly. Having claimed a dominant pole position by half a second, Rosberg took his debut victory and the first win for Mercedes since the 1955 Italian Grand Prix, using a two-stop strategy. Rosberg’s pace at the beginning of the race was enough to ensure that he was able to complete his first pit stop without losing the lead and from there on he was able to control his advantage, completing the race on the medium tyres.

Chinese GP - Different day, same result, but plenty of surprises

Shanghai, 14 April – The current world championship leader will start tomorrow’s third round of the World Championship from ninth place on the grid and his team-mate is twelfth. Under normal F1 circumstances, that would seem an unusual scenario, but it’s not, given that the current leader is Fernando Alonso in the F2012 that Scuderia Ferrari knows is not yet competitive enough when compared to its usual rivals. His team-mate, Felipe Massa missed the cut into Q3 by around two tenths of a second, getting closer in terms of lap time to Fernando than in the first two rounds of this year’s series. Proving that this season is throwing up plenty of unusual scenarios is the fact that the Brazilian Ferrari man starts on the sixth row on the outside of reigning champion, Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull. So it’s been a case of different day, same result, as the Ferrari grid positions are identical to those at the Sepang circuit three weeks ago.

Chinese GP - Nothing new from Sepang to Shanghai

Alonso 9th and Massa 12th in qualifying
The circuit, the country and the weather might change, but the result of qualifying for Scuderia Ferrari remains the same. In Sepang, we had one driver, Fernando Alonso in ninth and the other, Felipe Massa in twelfth. In Shanghai, the Ferrari men produced an identical result. Also the same as in Malaysia was the management strategy for the Pirelli tyres: one set of Prime, which here is the Hard and one of Option (Soft) in Q1, one used and one new Soft in Q2. Fernando then used the last set of Soft available on his only run in Q3.

A puzzling performance

April 14, 2012
Our two drivers have not been with us very long, but one of the qualities they have already demonstrated is a good technical understanding of how their car behaves. Therefore the fact that both Daniel Ricciardo and Jean-Eric Vergne had no real explanation as to why they lacked pace this afternoon tells part of the story of why they only qualified 17th and 18th respectively. The two Toro Rosso boys will therefore start tomorrow’s Chinese Grand Prix from the ninth row of the grid.

Free Practice 3 and Qualifying – Chinese Grand Prix

Good sensations at HRT Formula 1 Team after the second day at the Chinese Grand Prix which took place today at the Shanghai International Circuit with Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan qualifying comfortably for tomorrow’s race. The set-up adjustments which were made to the car yesterday didn’t give the best result this morning on the track but, as the weather was more stable, the team was able to work on the set-up of the cars for the definitive qualifying session in the afternoon. Once they took to the track, the drivers felt a substantial improvement in the balance of the car which allowed them to make the most of both sets of soft tyres. De la Rosa and Karthikeyan finished 23rd and 24th respectively and face tomorrow’s 56-lap race with the objective of taking both F112’s past the finish line once again and continuing to gather vital data for the development of the car.

Chinese GP - No nasty surprises on Friday 13th

In many countries, Friday 13th is seen as being an unlucky date but, at least as far as Scuderia Ferrari is concerned, everything here at the Shanghai International Circuit went off in normal fashion, without any problems. Only the weather in the first session – rain at times, a track that was never completely dry, nor wet enough to be able to run intermediate tyres – created a few difficulties in terms of running the programme as planned on the Maranello team’s pit perch. It was however completed by the end of the day.

Chinese GP – Practice – Friday, 13.04.2012

Weather: misty and damp, 14-15°C air, 13-15°C track

The weather conditions were not too welcoming at the Shanghai International Circuit on Friday as it was rather chilly, misty and damp. The first free practice session for the Chinese Grand Prix didn’t see too much running as there wasn’t a lot to learn on a slippery track. Sergio Pérez was fourth fastest in the morning, Kamui Kobayashi followed in fifth place. In the second of the two 90-minutes sessions the conditions clearly allowed for dry tyres, and both drivers continued to work on the car’s set-up. Kamui was seventh in the afternoon, Sergio 11th.

Wet start in China

The first free practice session was affected by rain, which has been falling on and off in Shanghai since Thursday night. It meant that both our drivers started their Chinese campaign on intermediate tyres on a damp track, before switching to the Pirelli Mediums, although more rain later saw the inters come out again.

Chinese Grand Prix – Still a long way to go

Even before the winter tests in Spain in February had come to an end, the media and “F1 experts” were already talking about Scuderia Ferrari being “in crisis.” This phrase is hardly new, having been used countless times in the 62 year history of the most successful team in the sport. However, in interviews with the press, the drivers and senior management did not deny the fact that the F2012 was displaying some shortcomings in overall performance, particularly on the aerodynamic front and in terms of top speed.

2012 CHINESE GRAND PRIX

SHANGHAI, 13-15 APRIL
Race Preview Feature Three: Cracking the Conundrum
Two races into the 2012 season, and firm conclusions are very hard to come by when assessing the true competitiveness of the teams. The results from the first two races indicate that this could be one of the most open seasons for years, with seven different teams finishing in the top ten in Melbourne - and nine in the mixed conditions of Sepang. Even in qualifying, the margins are incredibly close: the top ten qualifiers from Q2 at the first two races were separated by an average of eight-tenths of a second, compared to 1.5 seconds in the first two races of last year. In such a tightly matched field, small details make a huge difference.
