Broken Wings. 2012 Monaco Grand Prix - The Race

Monaco Street Circuit, Principality of Monaco
27 May 2012
The Marussia F1 Team’s Monaco Grand Prix got off to a flying start and continued that way for much of a race that saw Timo Glock equal his highest finish of the season, P14. However, in a more disappointing conclusion, a broken front wing end plate necessitated one more stop than his planned strategy and dropped Timo back in the race and the team down in the Constructors’ Standings.

Monaco GP - Alonso on top and Massa reborn

Another podium, the third of the season for Fernando Alonso and Scuderia Ferrari. The Spaniard finished the Grand Prix in third place while his team-mate Felipe Massa came home sixth. With this result, Fernando heads the Drivers’ classification, while Felipe moves up to fourteenth. In the classification for Constructors, the Scuderia is now third, equal on points with Lotus. Both Ferrari men made a single pit stop, Fernando on lap 30 and Felipe on lap 31, switching from the Pirelli Supersofts used in the first stint to the Softs on which they ended the race. Fernando’s podium finish brings the Ferrari total at this race to 48.

Monaco Grand Prix – Rain on our parade

For a while it looked as if, after a difficult qualifying, we were going to bring home at least one of our cars in the points in the Monaco Grand Prix, but the rain, or rather the lack of it, combined with some other situations, spoiled our plans. You might as well read what our two drivers and team principal had to say, as it gives you a very clear picture of how our race went.

Circuit de Monaco, Sunday May 27
“I got everything I could out of the car today”
MARTIN WHITMARSH, Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“This year’s Monaco Grand Prix won’t go down as one of the most triumphant in McLaren’s glorious Monte-Carlo history – since, although Lewis finished just four seconds behind Mark [Webber] today, in truth the smallness of that deficit was partly occasioned by the unique combination of the drivers’ need to drive with tyre conservation in mind and a circuit on which overtaking is well-nigh impossible.

Webber makes Red Bull two-time winners with Pirelli

Monaco, May 27, 2012 – With Monaco being the hardest circuit of the year to overtake on, the emphasis was on tyre strategy to help move drivers forward during the race. Red Bull’s Mark Webber became the season’s sixth different winner in six races – a new record – underlining just how closely matched the cars are this year. Red Bull becomes the first team to win twice this year, following Sebastian Vettel’s victory in Bahrain.

Monaco GP - Monaco delivers the best qualifying of 2012

This afternoon’s qualifying for the Monaco Grand Prix was the best team performance of the season so far. Fernando Alonso and Felipe Massa ended the session setting the sixth and seventh fastest times respectively, but the Spaniard will actually start from fifth, because of the penalty imposed on pole-setter Schumacher after the Spanish Grand Prix. Monaco GP - Monaco gets off on the right foot

Rain is the same for everyone
It is standard practice to describe the Monaco Grand Prix as a lottery and it’s even more of a cliché this year, as there does not seem to be a clear favourite going into the weekend. Adding a further element of uncertainty was the rain, which was the dominant feature of the second free practice session: right from the opening moments, the conditions were never ideal, neither for the slicks, nor for the intermediate tyres. This meant that practically no one was able to work through the usual programme relating to tyre behaviour over a long run. In total, the two F2012s completed 85 laps, 45 with Fernando Alonso driving and 40 in the hands of Felipe Massa.

Monaco GP – Practice – Thursday, 24.05.2012

Weather: sunny and dry in the morning, light rain in the afternoon,
22-24°C air, 26-31°C track

Thursday’s two free practice sessions ahead of the famous Monaco Grand Prix were trouble free for the Sauber F1 Team. Sergio Pérez and Kamui Kobayashi both pronounced themselves happy with the Sauber C31-Ferrari in its high downforce configuration. While the morning was dry and sunny, light showers in the afternoon meant the fans didn’t see as much track action as they had hoped for. The slippery conditions did, however, see several cars visit the escape roads, but thankfully with no damage.

Alesi races in Indy, Vergne pays tribute in Monaco

Frenchman Jean Alesi was one of the most popular drivers in Formula 1, especially here in Monaco. Natural enough given that the Principality is wedged between France and Italy, the two countries that make up Alesi’s roots.
However, while this year’s Monaco Grand Prix is taking place, Alesi will have a race of his own to concentrate on, because this Sunday he makes his first ever appearance behind the wheel in the famous Indianapolis 500. Several months ago, when the news broke that Jean would be trying his hand at the Brickyard, Jean-Eric Vergne promised him he’d be there to witness the event, but that was before Jev found out he was going to be a Formula 1 driver this year and would be a bit busy himself this weekend!

MONACO GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Thursday 24 to Sunday 27 May, 2012
Monte Carlo, Monaco
Round: 6 of 20

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: The 78 lap race on the demanding 3.34km long partially resurfaced Monaco circuit is unique and is undoubtedly one of the most stringent tests of the season for both driver and team alike, with little to no margin for error. On the back of Pastor's excellent win in Barcelona both drivers are eager to get back on track, aiming to bring both cars home in the points on Sunday afternoon. The team's preparations for Monaco have been somewhat hampered by last Sunday's garage fire, but the impact of the fire has been mitigated by what can only be described as a Herculean effort by the factory and our suppliers to restock both the damaged equipment and car parts. We would also like to thank the generous offers of help from the other teams, highlighting once more the excellent sportsmanship that exists in Formula One and high levels of comradery throughout the pit lane.

Romain Grosjean: “I hope we will have a pleasant surprise”

19 may 2012
After the first two races Romain had completed a mere four race laps. Now five races into the season he can look back on two strong points scoring Grands Prix, with a fourth place finish in Barcelona the latest result. Next stop Monaco as the Frenchman gets ready for the closest thing to a home Grand Prix…

How do you feel after another strong result in Spain?
I think we can be quite happy with the result. Not satisfied, but happy. Both cars in the top four is good for the team and good for the championship. It's good for me as well to finish another race, and to gain some more experience at the front of the field. We have also shown ourselves to be one of the most consistent teams in the paddock, which is a very good strength. We can still improve our car and that's what everyone is working hard for.

Two podiums from the last two races for Formula 1's most popular returnee in 2012; Here, Kimi looks ahead to the Monaco Grand Prix

Barcelona was your second podium in a row for the team; how was it from your perspective?
To be honest, I was a little disappointed. I expected us to be a bit stronger in the race, especially at the beginning. In the last stint we were very good, but it was too late. We were not fast enough to race and that's why we couldn't fight for a win. But we showed in the end that we have good speed.

Round six of the FIA Formula 1 World Championship takes place around the streets of Monte Carlo. It’s the shortest, yet most demanding track on the calendar, and the drivers love the challenge of F1’s original street race.

The Monaco Grand Prix was on the inaugural F1 calendar back in 1950 and it’s been a regular fixture since ’55. The layout of the 3.3km circuit has remained largely unchanged, the biggest updates taking place in 2004, when a new pit complex was built.

Spanish GP - Two sides to qualifying in Montmelo. Alonso shines in front of home crowd

There were two sides to qualifying for Scuderia Ferrari, as Fernando Alonso was third fastest, while Felipe Massa ended Q2 only in seventeenth place. Both drivers were on identical tyre useage programmes during the first two parts of the session: one set of Hard and then one of Soft in Q1, then one used and one new set of Soft in Q2. This meant for the first time this year, Fernando was finally able to tackle Q3 on a level footing with the others.
