Belgian GP – Rain is the star at Spa

Spa-Francorchamps, 31 August – When you think of the famous circuit at Spa-Francorchamps the first things that come to mind are what make this track so special: the mythical Eau Rouge, the corner immediately after the start-finish straight, the ups and downs and so many other points that have made this track well-known all over the world and, perhaps, the most loved of all by the drivers and fans of Formula 1.

31 AUGUST 2012
Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: The poor weather completely dominated both of today's sessions with all the running being performed on the full wet tyre. Pastor felt that his balance in FP1, particularly at the start of the session was very good and his laptimes reflected this, being extremely competitive. Valtteri also did a good job in FP1. With conditions worsening in FP2 we only ran both Pastor and Bruno at the end of the session in order to optimise the car for the race starts. The weather looks much better for the weekend and there is a lot of work to do in FP3 ahead of both qualifying and the race.

“I just enjoyed every little bit of lap I had!”
Spa-Francorchamps, Friday August 31
Team principal, Vodafone McLaren Mercedes
“It’s hardly surprising to be here in Spa and find that the weather is cold, wet and misty. Unfortunately, that means that Formula 1’s much anticipated return after the summer break has been effectively pushed back by 24 hours because none of the drivers were able to set representative times out there today.

· Weather conditions in Spa were very wet throughout the day with continuous and heavy rain showers

· P1 saw little action until late in the session when the drivers were able to complete a few laps on the wet tyres

· P2 was also a washout with Nico and Michael the first drivers to go out after an hour to complete practice starts

Preview to the Belgian Grand Prix

29 August 2012 — The Belgian Grand Prix represents one of the hardest challenges of the year for engines. Over 70% of the 7.004km historic Spa-Francorchamps circuit in the heart of the Belgian Ardennes forest is spent at full throttle, giving the track the second highest power factor of the season after Monza. Outright power and top speed are therefore rewarded significantly more than at other circuits on the calendar.

Friday 31 August to Sunday 2 September, 2012
Spa-Francorchamps, Belgium
Round: 12 of 20

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: It’s great to be back racing again after the August break and the whole team has been preparing eagerly for the remaining nine races, eight of which are back to back. Spa is a fantastic circuit and an excellent challenge for the drivers and car alike. We’re expecting rain at the beginning of the weekend but are hopeful for a dry qualifying and race. Setting the correct wing level with DRS is crucial around this track and one tends to see a number of different aerodynamic solutions. Pirelli are bringing their hard and medium tyres which were last used way back in Malaysia.

The Belgian Grand Prix from a tyre point of view

Spa, 31 August - 2 September 2012
Pirelli Medium and Hard tyres for Spa ‘roller coaster’
Milan, August 27, 2012 – Following the month-long summer break, Pirelli returns to action with the P Zero Silver hard tyre and P Zero White medium: a combination that has not been raced since the second grand prix of the season in Malaysia.

The conditions at the legendary Spa-Francorchamps circuit will be somewhat different however. The 7.004-kilometre lap is the longest of the entire year by some margin, and this is just one of the factors that can lead to extremely variable weather conditions, with a high risk of rain. Set within the Ardennes hills, Spa’s geography also ensures that it has its own microclimate, meaning that it can often be raining on one part of the circuit but be completely dry on another part.

Spa-Francorchamps facts & stats

One of the most revered racetracks in the world, Spa-Francorchamps featured on the inaugural Formula 1 World Championship calendar in 1950 and has retained much of its original high-speed character to this day.

There have been two iterations of the circuit. The first was designed in 1920, using public roads and the natural elevation changes of the local Ardennes countryside. This layout measured 14km and was extremely fast: F1’s final visit in 1970 saw cars averaging 150mph per lap.
