Q&A WITH SIR FRANK WILLIAMS

WEDNESDAY 28 NOVEMBER, 2012
Q: 2013 will see Pastor Maldonado and Valtteri Bottas as the Williams F1 Team’s driver line up. How do you think they will complement each other as drivers?
FW: Both drivers are very strong in their own right and I’m excited about what they can achieve next year. Pastor has shown this season that he is one of the fastest drivers in Formula One and has put in some stellar qualifying performances. Valtteri has already shown in what little running he has had that he can be on the pace quickly, so we should have two drivers that can get the most out of our car’s undoubted potential. They are also easy to get along with, which always helps in building good relationships with the engineers and developing the car.

Q&A WITH VALTTERI BOTTAS

WEDNESDAY 28 NOVEMBER, 2012
Q: You’ve been part of Williams since joining the team as a test driver in 2010, how does it feel to finally be race driver for the team?
VB: It feels incredible to be driving in Formula One next season and to be with a team like Williams, with all its pedigree, is even more special. I’ve worked hard to get here ever since I started karting at six years old, but the real work starts now as I prepare myself for the biggest challenge of my career. The fact that I’ve been with Williams since 2010 will help a lot though because I know the engineers really well and have a good working relationship with them.

Q&A WITH PASTOR MALDONADO

WEDNESDAY 28 NOVEMBER, 2012
Q: Now you’ve been confirmed as a Williams driver for a third season, what are your thoughts heading into 2013?
PM: 2013 will be an important season for the team. In my first season we had a lot of problems with the car, but this year we made a big step forward in performance and managed to capture a memorable win in Barcelona. We have a lot of potential as a team and next year we must continue this upward trend and produce a car that can challenge for strong points finishes and podiums at a wide range of circuits.

Brazilian GP - So very close

Interlagos, 25 November – Scuderia Ferrari has finished the Constructors’ Championship in second place, Fernando Alonso is second in the Drivers’ classification and Felipe Massa is seventh. That is how the 2012 season will be archived but it does not even scratch the surface of explaining the drama of this final race weekend of the year. Fernando Alonso said a chaotic race would be his best chance of getting his hands on the title crown and he got just that with intermittent rain falling throughout the afternoon. The Ferrari man also admitted that unless Sebastian Vettel retired, being champion was very unlikely. He was proved right, because, while the Spaniard delivered yet another superb performance to finish the race second behind the winner, McLaren’s Jenson Button, however with the German bringing home his Red Bull in sixth place, it was enough to give him his third consecutive Drivers’ title. There was plenty of red on the Interlagos podium because Felipe Massa also delivered a beautiful performance to come home third, in a race where just staying on track was an achievement.

Brazilian GP - We almost did it in Interlagos

Two drivers on the podium and 33 points – the biggest haul of the season – was not enough for Scuderia Ferrari to help Fernando Alonso win the Drivers’ title. The Spaniard finished the Brazilian Grand Prix in second place, to record his thirteenth podium finish of his extraordinary season. Alongside him in third place for the second time this season and for a fourth time in his home race was Felipe Massa. At the end of the twenty races making up this the longest season in the history of Formula 1, only three points separated Fernando from the winner, while Felipe, who produced a brilliant drive today, finished seventh. The Scuderia is second in the Constructors’ classification on 400 points.

BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Friday 23 to Sunday 25 November, 2012
Sao Paulo, Brazil
Round: 20 of 20

Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: The 71 lap long high altitude Interlagos circuit is one of the highlights of the season and one where overtaking is possible. Setting the car up for this circuit is the classic compromise between pandering to the high downforce requirements of the medium-low speed corners in sector 2 versus the low drag demands of the uphill section from the important T12 exit right up to the start-finish line. After a double points finish in Austin, we will be looking for a similar result here to end the season on a high note.

Renault’s Constructors’ Titles

The 2012 title is the 11th constructors’ championship that Renault has taken in the sport.
After joining forces with Williams at the end of the 80s, the first constructors’ championship came in 1992. It was then followed by successive titles in 1993 and 1994. Renault teamed up with Benetton in 1995 and immediately took another crown, before Williams again took the title in 1996 and 1997; the sixth consecutive title to be powered by Renault. After a brief hiatus from the sport Renault returned with the Renault F1 Team and won another two titles in 2005 and 2006. The latest period of success with Red Bull Racing has yielded three constructors’ titles to date.

United States GP - Qualifying leaves a bitter taste in Austin

From one continent to another, the outcome of qualifying remains a bitter one for Scuderia Ferrari. On Saturday afternoon in Abu Dhabi, the two F2012s were seventh and ninth and the numbers were the same on the new Austin track, this time with Felipe Massa ahead of Fernando Alonso. The way qualifying evolved definitely did not follow the usual pattern, with just a single run for both drivers in each of the three sessions: in Q1 using the Prime, while switching to the Option for Q2 and Q3. The reason for this strategy resides with the difficulty in finding the right operating temperature for the tyres at this track, a problem that affected the whole session.

• Bruno made a mistake in the final moments of Q2, running wide at Turn 19 resulting in him narrowly missing out on a place in Q3.
• With the good race pace seen yesterday, the team are feeling confident of moving both cars further into the points tomorrow.

Extra Pirelli tyres help maximise track running time in Austin

Austin, November 16, 2012 – History was made today, as Pirelli returned to Formula One racing in the United States for the first time since 1990, when the Italian tyres were last seen at the United States Grand Prix in Phoenix, Arizona. The P Zero Silver hard tyres and P Zero White medium were used in free practice at Austin, as the teams got their very first chance to familiarise themselves with the brand-new circuit. In order to allow them to maximise their running, Pirelli brought an additional set of the hard compound tyres for today’s two free practice sessions only, enabling the drivers to complete more laps than they would usually on a Friday.

United States Grand Prix Friday Practice, Drivers' Reaction

Here's what Sebastian and Mark had to say after their first day on track at the Circuit of the Americas...
Car 1, Sebastian Vettel: “It was slippery this morning and a bit like driving on ice. It wasn’t so easy, but we managed to get into a rhythm. We had a bit of a problem this afternoon and so couldn’t run as much as we wanted, but we got two good runs which is important for tomorrow and Sunday. I think there were a couple of surprises today in terms of pace, so we’ll see tomorrow. The track will constantly improve – it’s good that we are amongst the guys at the top, now we’ll try to improve the car to make sure we stay there.”

Awesome!

The most overused word in the American dictionary is actually quite appropriate here at the Circuit of the Americas, because, at first sight, the massive hill rising up like a wall at the end of the pit straight leaves everyone awestruck. The rest of the circuit is equally entertaining and as our Monsieur Vergne said there was not one single corner which he felt was ordinary or uninspiring.

Weather: sunny and dry,12 -21°C air, 15-31° track
COTA, the brand new Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas, offers everything a race driver could ask for. For the Sauber F1 Team on the rollercoaster track both free practice sessions on Friday went okay. The new tarmac allows for lap times to improve minute by minute, despite the fact the combination of hard tyres and low track temperatures keep the general grip level low. In the afternoon the team began with proper set up work for the United States Grand Prix, the penultimate round of the 2012 FIA Formula One World Championship. Neither Kamui Kobayashi nor Sergio Pérez are really happy with their cars yet, but are positive they will find solutions to improve them.

The FIA Formula One World Championship returns to the USA for the first time since 2007 this weekend with the inaugural Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. The 5.516km track is set in the Texan countryside outside Austin and features corner profiles similar to the most challenging complexes ever seen on the calendar, including the Suzuka Esses and Turn 8 from Istanbul. There are also several gradient changes over a lap, particularly in sector one, which features a blind apex that will really push the drivers.

Heikki Kovalainen, car 20, chassis CT01-#03: “COTA looks like a great circuit. I’ve spent a day in the simulator preparing for it so I know how it flows and they’ve taken the same approach as we saw in India, adding in up and downhill sections with some really quick corners and a couple of heavy braking zones where it should be possible to pass other cars.

UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX PREVIEW

Friday 16 – Sunday 18 November, 2012
Austin, America
Round: 19 of 20
Mark Gillan, Chief Operations Engineer: On the back of a good result in Abu Dhabi the whole team is really looking forward to the last two races of the season. We will be pushing hard right to the end with further updates in order to try to secure seventh position in the constructors championship. As this is a new track, with no historic database of information to call upon, it places even more importance on one’s circuit simulation tools and simulator to ensure that we’re fully prepared in terms of both car set-up and proposed run programme. Pirelli bring their hard and medium tyres and as normal for any new track one will need to be careful on analysing the track versus the tyre evolution when making strategy predictions.

United States Grand Prix Preview

Madrid, Monday the 12th of November 2012
The Formula 1 World Championship leaves Asia after five consecutive races in the Orient and it does so to return to the United States for the first time in five years. The city of Austin in Texas will host the United States Grand Prix for the first time from the 16th to the 18th of November at the brand new Circuit of The Americas. The first ever Formula 1 United States Grand Prix took place in 1959 at the Sebring International Raceway in Florida with Bruce McLaren of Australia taking the win. This will be the 33rd edition and the sixth different circuit to stage the race. Therefore, Pedro de la Rosa and Narain Karthikeyan arrive in uncharted territory, like the rest of the drivers and teams, meaning that adapting as soon as possible will be vital, something that they have successfully done on numerous occasions this season.

Raikkonen stops just once to seal his first victory with Pirelli

Abu Dhabi, November 4, 2012 – Lotus driver Kimi Raikkonen has sealed the first victory of his Formula One comeback with Pirelli: the 19th of his career. The Finn used a one-stop strategy, stopping on lap 31 to move from the P Zero Yellow soft to the P Zero White medium tyres. Raikkonen, who started fourth on the grid, took the lead following the retirement of McLaren’s Lewis Hamilton on lap 19, and did not relinquish it until the finish. Second place for Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso – who used an identical strategy to Raikkonen, stopping three laps earlier – meant that the Spaniard reduced his gap to the lead of the drivers’ championship to 10 points with two races to go, pushing the Lotus driver all the way to the chequered flag.

Abu Dhabi GP - A disappointing qualifying in the Abu Dhabi night

One car seventh and another ninth: definitely not a result that matches Scuderia Ferrari’s expectations in qualifying for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. After a relatively positive start to the session – Q1 was dealt with using just the Prime tyre and Q2, at least in Alonso’s case, using just one set of Options – in Q3, the F2012 was not competitive enough, not just when compared to our usual rivals, but also when up against other cars that in recent races had been inferior to us in terms of performance.

Abu Dhabi, November 3, 2012 – McLaren driver Lewis Hamilton has ended Red Bull’s recent run of three one-two qualifying results, thanks to a pole position lap of 1m40.630s in Abu Dhabi using the P Zero Yellow soft. The soft tyre, making its final appearance of the year this weekend, has been nominated together with the P Zero White medium tyre for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Hamilton was three-tenths of a second ahead of Red Bull driver Mark Webber in final qualifying: historically the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has only ever been won from the front row of the grid.

Season Ticket

Seventeenth and eighteenth on the Friday “grid:” it seems that Daniel and Jean-Eric have been given the official F1 season ticket for these places. Not exactly inspiring, but no cause for alarm, as we have nearly always managed to improve the car throughout the weekend, eventually challenging for points on Sunday.

Half a second separates medium and soft Pirelli tyres in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi, November 2, 2012 – The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, at the spectacular Yas Marina circuit, is unique because it starts in the late afternoon and finishes at dusk. This puts a new complexion on the tyre evaluation work that is carried out during free practice on Friday, with a different pattern of ambient and track temperature evolution – and therefore tyre behaviour – than usual. Normally temperatures rise during each session, but in Abu Dhabi (as well as at the night race in Singapore) they drop.
