Malaysian GP - A missed opportunity

Stefano Domenicali: “Clearly today’s result leaves a somewhat bitter taste in the mouth given the start positions we had secured in qualifying. As soon as Fernando collided with Vettel it was clear that his race would involve fighting his way up the order. At that time, we felt the front wing could hold out and on a track that was progressively drying out, we risked leaving him out. With hindsight, it did not work out, trying to avoid doing two stops in the space of just four laps. As for Felipe, the gap that grew during the opening laps compromised his chances to fight with the leading group of four towards the end. Given the competitive performance level of our rivals, now the important thing is to turn the page: we must put this Sunday behind us and calmly analyse the positive and negative aspects, as we immediately turn our attention to the next race in China.”

Cold Shower for Lotus F1 Team at Sepang
Sunday 24th March 2013
Romain Grosjean finished sixth and Kimi Räikkönen seventh in today’s Malaysian Grand Prix from the Sepang International Circuit. A wet but rapidly drying track saw all competitors start on Pirelli’s intermediate tyres, with both Romain and Kimi moving to medium then hard compound dry tyres as the race progressed. Kimi keeps up his run of consecutive points finishes but falls to second in the Drivers’ Championship, behind today’s race winner Sebastian Vettel. The team maintains second position in the Cosntructors’ Championship, with third placed Ferrari on an equal 40 points.

Malaysian GP: Team Reaction

Mar 24, 2013
Jean-Eric Vergne (STR8-03) Race position: 10th
“It’s good to finish in the points, but it’s a shame that a mistake in the pits cost us so much, as I could have done something better. So, overall I feel rather frustrated. But I’ll take the point gladly. After these first two races, we now have a short break before we go racing again and we must use that time to take a close look at how we performed and where we can do better, because there is certainly a lot of room for improvement, as both these two races have been missed opportunities. On the positive side, again today, once we got over our problems I had a good race pace and managed to make up a lot of places.”

Malaysian Grand Prix: Team Reaction

March 24, 2013
Car 1 Sebastian Vettel, Finish Position: 1st, Start Position: Pole
“I messed up today. I would love to come up with a nice excuse as to why I did it, but I can’t. I can understand Mark’s frustration and the team not being happy with what I did today; I owe an explanation to him and the whole team. I will try to explain to them later. We talk about this situation happening many times and what we will do if and when it happens and normally it doesn’t, but today it did and I should have translated the call into action. I got the call and I ignored it. Mark and I are used to fighting each other when we’re close, but with the tyres how they are now, and not knowing how long they will last, it was an extremely big risk to ignore the call to stay second. We could have ended up finishing eighth or ninth after destroying the tyres in those two laps; I put myself above a team decision, which was wrong. I didn’t mean to and I apologise. I’m not happy I’ve won, I made a mistake and if I could undo it I would. It’s not easy right now and I owe apologies to Mark and the team.”

Weather: wet, then dry, 24-25°C air, 27-33°C track
The Malaysian Grand Prix brought the first four points for the Sauber F1 Team in the second race of the new season. At the beginning the track in Sepang was wet, and all the drivers started the race on intermediate tyres. However, after only a few laps they changed to dry tyres. The race was extremely demanding for tyres and, as a result, the specators saw a lot of pit stops. Both Sauber F1 Team drivers changed tyres four times. Malaysian GP - A long time coming

Fernando Alonso: “I am very happy with this position as it’s been too long since I qualified in the top three! Something I have usually managed to achieve in the race has been missing for quite a while: maybe the rain helped us a bit as we were not the quickest in the dry, but starting in the top three gives us a realistic chance of a podium finish and we can even dream about winning. In Q3, when we had seen the track was drying quickly, we had a moment’s hesitation, because in the dry, the intermediates only last one or two laps before beginning to degrade. But in the end, it seemed the most sensible choice and it worked out well. Of the past three years, this seems to be the moment when everything appears to be working for the best: performance, strategy, pit stops. Now we must see how tomorrow will turn out, because it’s always a lottery if it rains. Even if, in the current Formula 1, the start is not the most important thing, we will still try to make a good one in order to maintain position or even to try and get past Vettel at the first corner. Then we will see: our race pace in Australia and the long run here on Friday means we can be reasonably optimistic.”

“It was very difficult as the circuit was half dry and half wet today – so it was difficult to find the right compromise between pushing hard and also saving the tyres. It was the right strategy to come in and change the tyres and the pace was there. It was a good session in Q3 and it was clear what we had to do, so I’m pleased with the result. It’s a long race tomorrow and whoever wins will have done the best job. We managed to save some tyres today which will help if the race is dry, but we will see.”

“Coming into qualifying today, if I’d been told I could sign on the dotted line for thirteenth, I’d have taken it. It’s a decent result and we haven’t been that far up the time sheets all weekend in practice. Looking at it that way, thirteenth is quite good, but in Q1, we were quite competitive and only one hundredth of a second from the top ten. With the rain coming, maybe we missed an opportunity to do better. We have improved but I still want more. Tomorrow, I plan to move up the order in what could be an unpredictable race. I really want to be in the top ten and get some points on the board early in the season.”

Malaysian GP – Ferrari confident in unpredictable Sepang

Fernando Alonso: “Today, the car worked well in all conditions and that is very good news for us. This circuit is more representative than Australia for evaluating the car’s performance and so it was important to understand here today if the positive feelings from the winter were not just an illusion. On my lap on the Medium tyres, I did not have the right balance, otherwise I could have managed to improve, as I did on the Hards and I could probably have been on the “front row.” Now we must see how tomorrow goes, when it could rain at any moment and on a track where tyre degradation is much higher than in Melbourne. With a high number of pit stops likely, a car that works better in the race than in qualifying could be an advantage. However, tomorrow we will try and do our best to get a place on the front row, because, as usual, the start, strategy and pit stops will hold the key”.

TEAMS GET USED TO THE HEAT AND RAIN OF MALAYSIA WITH PIRELLI

Sepang, March 22, 2013 – Conditions for the first two free practice sessions in Malaysia were in complete contrast to Australia last week, with ambient temperatures of 33 degrees centigrade and track temperatures that sometimes exceeded 40 degrees centigrade. Once more though there was rain, which fell halfway through FP2. This meant that many teams accelerated their programmes, moving from the P Zero Orange hard tyre onto the P Zero White medium tyre earlier than expected in FP2. This was the very first outing for the 2013-specification hard tyre, which is coloured orange for the first time.

MALAYSIAN GP PREVIEW

Friday 22nd - Sunday 24th March, 2013
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
Round: 2 of 19

Mike Coughlan, Technical Director: Following a difficult opening to the season in Australia, the team has regrouped and been working hard to solve the problems we encountered last weekend. We have a good idea where to focus our efforts and learnt a lot in Melbourne which we will implement in Malaysia to continue working to improve the performance of the FW35 throughout Friday testing and into the weekend. The Sepang circuit is a technical challenge which is always quite hard on tyres. The high ambient temperatures and humidity also make it a tough race for the drivers, with the weather also playing its part with late afternoon showers common and forecast over the weekend. Our aim is to move forward from where we were last weekend, with a view to end the race with both cars in points-scoring positions.

NEW P ZERO ORANGE TYRE MAKES ITS DEBUT IN MALAYSIA

Milan, March 18, 2013 – The toughest compound in Pirelli’s new 2013 range of tyres makes its debut in Malaysia, complete with a brand new colour. The P Zero Orange hard has been nominated for Sepang together with the P Zero White medium, which was already seen in Australia. The two hardest compounds in Pirelli’s range are ideal for the extreme temperatures and abrasive surface of Malaysia. Sepang is also well-known for its monsoon-like downpours, which make it extremely likely that the Cinturato Green intermediate and Cinturato Blue full wet tyres will be seen at some point over the course of the weekend.

Mar 17, 2013
Car 1 Sebastian Vettel, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: Pole
“I think you’re always a little disappointed when you start first and don’t finish first, but overall it was a good weekend for us. We had a good day today with a pole and a podium – but in the race we were a little too aggressive with the tyres and lost the front and the rears, while others did a little better. There are always areas where you can improve, but the result we got today is fair. We didn’t see Kimi on the track, he was too quick and Fernando jumped us at a vulnerable time – but we can be happy with third.”

Australian GP - Qualifying postponed

Melbourne, 16 March – The starting grid for the Australian Grand Prix will not be decided until after 11 tomorrow morning. The Race Director took the decision to postpone Q2 and Q3 because of a violent storm that hit the Albert Park circuit. At the end of Q1, the only part of the proceedings that went ahead when the rain eased briefly, Fernando Alonso was second fastest in 1.43.850, behind the Mercedes of Nico Rosberg, (1.43.380.) In the other F138, Felipe Massa was sixth in 1.44.635, having survived a spin that saw him damage both wings against the barriers.

Rain stopped play!

Mar 16, 2013
Well, today was strange. Qualifying should have been 1700 until 1800 local time. We had delay, then another delay, then Q1 then a whole series of further delays until finally the whole thing was called off at 1847. We’re lucky the sun went down else we’d probably still be standing there now.

While the Sauber F1 Team driver Nico Hülkenberg finished 13th in Q1, Esteban Gutiérrez spun on a kerb, hit the barrier and couldn’t continue. He finished 18th and so did not progress further than Q1.

Saturday 16 March

An eventful day at Albert Park saw Romain Grosjean top the times in FP3, then set the third fastest lap in Q1 before the remainder of qualifying was postponed. Kimi Räikkönen went fifth fastest in FP3 and eleventh quickest in the Q1 session. Qualifying will resume at Albert Park with the Q2 session, starting at 11:00 local time (01:00 CET).

Four seasons in one day

Mar 16, 2013
Melbourne is reckoned to have a temperate climate and a favourite saying in this city is that, in terms of weather, you can experience four seasons in one day. That was almost the situation today and it was a case of the rain affecting all the track action, starting with the morning’s free practice session. The clouds never went away after that and a massive downpour delayed the start of Q1 and then further delays ensued, until the Race Director took the wise decision to postpone Q2 and Q3 to 11h00 on Sunday morning. The track conditions were atrocious and on top of that, visibility was becoming an issue.

FORMULA ONE SEASON IS GO WITH NEW RANGE OF PIRELLI TYRES

Milan, March 11, 2013 – The 2013 Formula One season gets underway in Australia this weekend, with Pirelli supplying the new P Zero White medium and P Zero Red supersoft compounds: the first time that such a nomination has been made by the Italian firm for the Albert Park circuit. This year’s compounds are generally softer and faster than their predecessors, but two to three pit stops are still expected per car on race day. Where: Melbourne, Australia
Round: 1 of 19

Mike Coughlan, Technical Director: We had a successful winter test and are continuing to look at all the data we gathered. Following this, we have some further aero tests planned for Friday with both drivers in Australia. The results so far have been interesting and so we’ll make our final decision on Friday evening as to what we will run over the weekend. In either case, we feel we have two strong aero packages, each with their own benefits, and so the nature of the circuit and temperatures we find will dictate which package we choose.

TEAMS COMPLETE TESTING WITH FULL RANGE OF PIRELLI TYRES

Review – 2013 Official Formula One Test in Barcelona
Barcelona, March 3, 2013 – With just two weeks to go before the 2013 Formula One season gets underway in Melbourne, the final four-day test took place in Barcelona, with two days of wet weather followed by two days of dry running. This enabled the teams to sample the entire range of 2013 Pirelli tyres, including the Cinturato Green Intermediate and Cinturato Blue full wet. With Barcelona being an extremely familiar venue, particularly off the back of last week’s test at the Circuit de Catalunya, the teams were able to carry out some useful comparison work between all the compounds and assess the final upgrades to their new cars.

Alonso: “We are on the right road”

Barcelona, 2 March – Scuderia Ferrari is continuing its preparation for the season in Barcelona, where yesterday, Fernando Alonso got through another busy day of testing. The F138 seems to be moving forward with every lap, clearly responding to any modifications made and eating up the kilometres, with a further 102 laps of the Catalunya Circuit added yesterday, equivalent to 475 to be precise. The rain certainly didn’t help, but it was not enough to stop the men in red, as they worked through a programme focussed on important aero checks and some vital reliability testing, all aimed at getting a better understanding of the car prior to the now rapidly approaching first Grand Prix.
