Bahrain GP - A cursed Sunday

Stefano Domenicali: “This is definitely not the outcome we expected after showing all weekend long that we were capable of fighting for the top places. Today’s result needs to be put behind us in a hurry, although there is a feeling of great disappointment that we were unable to bring home the hoped for result. Despite his problem with the DRS, Fernando produced a blistering drive, pulling off overtaking moves and setting lap times that were absolutely incredible. Felipe’s race was also very complicated: first of all he was involved in a collision at the start of the race, which damaged the front wing on his F138, then he had tyre problems which compromised his race still further. An initial analysis after the first four races indicates that we did not pick up as many points as we should have done. In just over three weeks, we will be back on track in Europe and it will be important to turn this trend around immediately. Until then, we will knuckle down and continue with the development of a car that still has plenty of potential to offer”.

Bahrain Grand Prix: Team Reaction

April 21, 2013
Car 1 Sebastian Vettel, Finish Position: 1st, Start Position: 2nd
“It was good fun at the beginning with some very tight wheel to wheel racing. At the start you don’t know if you will be quick or not, as everyone is a bit all over the place, including yourself! It’s important to get to the front; we saw at the last race that if you get stuck behind someone then it does have an impact on tyre wear and today it was important to make use of the tyres we had saved from qualifying yesterday. I love to be in clean air, so I was pushing hard to get into the lead and, with the speed we had mid-race, it was quite comfortable today. Well done to the whole team, to everyone here, to the factory in the background and especially to those who were working on the strategy today; it worked just as we expected, so we obviously got the numbers right.”

Bahrain Grand Prix: Team Reaction

April 21, 2013
Daniel Ricciardo (STR8-01) Race Position: 16th
“I got a reasonable start, better than some of the guys around me and I got ahead of Grosjean. Then at some point, I locked up the wheels and lost a position or two. All afternoon, we just struggled with speed: in the first stint, tyre warm-up was a problem and I was losing a lot of time on braking. We never really recovered, even though we tried to make a few changes to the balance of the car at the pit stops. We must look into what exactly was wrong with the car as we were really limited in terms of downforce.”

Sunday, 21.04.2013
Weather: sunny and dry, 29-26°C air, 42-37°C track

It was a disappointing Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix for the Sauber F1 Team. In a race that had plenty of pit stop action and exciting duels, Nico Hülkenberg finished 12th and Esteban Gutiérrez, who started last, finished in 18th. After just one lap, the Mexican had to pit because of a broken front wing. The find of the weekend was that the car is simply not competitive on this track and an improvement is expected in Barcelona.

Bahrain GP - An all-Red second row

Fernando Alonso: “It’s really good news that once again we managed to do well in qualifying, which is our Achilles Heel! This is now the third time this year that we end up in the top three and, even if usually Sunday goes better thanks to our race pace, I am really pleased to see our potential already maximized on Saturday. The data seen from Friday’s long runs means we can be optimistic about a race in which our main adversaries are represented by Vettel and the Red Bull in front and the Lotuses which might be behind us on the grid, but they will definitely be in the game. Because of the penalties for Hamilton and Webber, Felipe will start from fourth: I think it’s much better that I find myself alongside my team-mate’s Ferrari than Lewis’ Mercedes! We won’t discover which is the best strategy until tomorrow and it’s impossible to make predictions. But I think the best tyre for the race will be the hard and that could work in our favour, given it’s the one we have been most comfortable on all weekend”.

MULTIPLE STRATEGIES POSSIBLE AT THE BAHRAIN GRAND PRIX

Sakhir, April 20, 2013 – Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg will start from pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix tomorrow, thanks to a time of 1m32.330s set on the P Zero White medium tyres, which have been nominated along with the P Zero Orange hard tyres this weekend. Rosberg’s pole lap on the 2013 medium tyre eclipsed the pole time set by Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull on the 2012 soft tyre last year: 1m32.422s. “I’m not disappointed with that. Well done to Nico, it was a strong lap and it was all his today. When I crossed the line I saw I was second on the screen and didn’t know how much I was missing to pole as the lap was fine. When I got told the gap to P1, it was clear that even with a perfect lap he was unbeatable today, but nevertheless I’m very happy. I don’t think I could have done better than this today, looking at the guys we managed to out-perform in qualifying and how we went in free practice. We were close to a McLaren and ahead of both Saubers and Williams, so I feel that is where we should be on current form. Bahrain GP - Closely matched in the desert

Fernando Alonso: “It was a positive day and we are reasonably pleased with how the car behaved. We had no major problems and more importantly, we didn’t have to make any radical changes to the F138 to adapt it to this track and its long straights and slow corners, characteristics which I like a lot and usually produce a great show in the race. Unfortunately, the wind and sand make everything a bit more complicated here, because the track surface never gets completely clean. However, the initial feelings are good and I think we can be up in the leading group tomorrow, a group that is all within the same two, maximum three tenths. We have not yet decided if we will use the aero updates we tried in the morning. It is not yet completely clear how they worked and in the afternoon, we concentrated on comparing the two tyre compounds we have for this race. Ahead of us is another long evening of studying data to choose the best strategy and set-up for qualifying and the race”.

HARDEST P ZERO COMPOUNDS FOR BAHRAIN

Milan, April 15, 2013 – Just one week after the Chinese Grand Prix, Formula One moves to Bahrain where the P Zero Orange hard and P Zero White medium tyres have been nominated. At the Bahrain International Circuit, high track and air temperatures are expected, along with a track surface that is frequently made dirty by sand from the surrounding desert. Bahrain is a fast, flowing and technically demanding circuit, which made it the perfect test venue for Pirelli when the Italian firm was preparing for its Formula One return. Traction and braking are the main demands of the 5.412-kilometre variable width track, with tyre degradation expected to be reasonably high – which is why the two hardest compounds of the range have been nominated.

Manama/Hinwil, 15th April 2013 – Straight after the Chinese Grand Prix the Sauber F1 Team set off to the Middle East for the Gulf Air Bahrain Grand Prix. Located in the middle of the desert, heat will play a significant role yet again at this track. The team left Shanghai with mixed feelings. Although Nico Hülkenberg scored one championship point for the swiss race outfit, some disappointment remains as the race looked more promising for quite some time. Nevertheless, overall it was a positive weekend as the technical measures, which the team had taken before Shanghai, worked well. Esteban Gutiérrez will have to start the race in Bahrain with a five place grid penalty after his accident in Shanghai. That, however, does not change his motivation.

Chinese GP - First win of the season

Shanghai, 14 April - Fernando Alonso delivered Scuderia Ferrari’s first win of the season in Shanghai this afternoon, in a race that was action packed, mainly down to the different strategies employed in managing the tyres. Chinese Grand Prix: Team Reaction

April 14, 2013
Car 1 Sebastian Vettel, Finish Position: 4th, Start Position: 9th
“After the last stop, the team told me there was quite a big gap to the cars ahead, but also a big gap behind, so we thought we should go for it in the closing stages. When I came on to the long straight and saw Lewis at the other end turning into the hair pin I thought ‘well, that’s a bit too far’, but obviously we had much more speed on the fresher tyres. It was a little bit disappointing to lose out by such a tiny bit; a few corners more and we could have tried something. Nonetheless, our strategy seemed to work today. We knew it would be difficult and that it was crucial to get clean laps, but we didn’t in the first stint. I was faster than Nico (Hulkenberg) but if you follow another car you lean on your front tyres too much and it was hard to find the right compromise, but overall we can be happy.”

I am definitely looking forward to having a strong race tomorrow and will give it all I’ve got to make the most of this seventh place on the grid. I think it will be an exciting race and today, you could see that most of us waited until the last moments in Q3 to go out, with everyone thinking about saving tyres for tomorrow, as the Options were having a hard time on a long run on Friday. This result will boost everyone’s spirits, and mine as well and I really can’t wait for the lights to go out tomorrow! Chinese GP - A step forward

Fernando Alonso: “To end qualifying with both cars in the top five is a result that fills me with hope for the race. The F138 has been competitive all weekend and that means we have made a step forward, which is down to the work of the team. Some of the updates we had here worked as we had expected, but others need further work. In terms of establishing what will be the best strategy, we will be in for a long night and that will be the case for everyone, given that almost all our main competitors will start on the Softs. I’m not concerned about Red Bull’s choice and Mercedes usually has a higher degradation than ours. I’m definitely expecting an interesting race in which the biggest threat could come from Raikkonen as the Lotus has shown it manages its tyres well”.

It was a different approach to normal in today’s qualifying and it all came down to the last few minutes for everyone; it was very silent and then everyone left in a queue to start the lap at the same time – but not a problem. Chinese Grand Prix: Qualifying - Team Reaction

April 13, 2013
Daniel Ricciardo (STR8-01)
“It’s nice to be in Q3. It’s the first time since Bahrain last year that I’ve made it to the top ten, so that’s nearly a whole year. The guys have been working so hard back at the factory and they’ve made the car quicker, so well done to everyone.”

UBS Chinese Grand Prix – Qualifying – Saturday, 13.04.2013

Weather: sunny and dry, 25 - 28°C air, 32 - 41°C track
The Sauber F1 Team showed clear progress in qualifying for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. After the season’s first two races the engineers took some measures which proved to be effective. Nico Hülkenberg made it into Q3, but then decided to save tyres for the race tomorrow. He didn’t set a lap time and finished P10, giving him free choice of the tyre compound for the start of the race. Teammate Esteban Gutiérrez made a mistake on his quick lap in Q1 and ended up 18th.

Chinese GP – New data on Friday in Shanghai

Fernando Alonso: “By the end of the day, the overall feeling is positive. We worked well and on top of that, it’s always great fun driving the Shanghai track which has some really unique features, such as the first corner. From one session to the next the track conditions improved significantly, because the other categories that ran after our morning session cleaned the surface. The increase in temperature means the conditions were very similar to those predicted for tomorrow. Once again, tyres will play a key role in this Grand Prix because of the high level of degradation over a long run. We will have to ensure we pick the right strategy for Sunday, as well as deciding on which of the new parts we tried this morning to fit to the car. As usual, we can expect a long evening studying the data.”

Weather: dry, 18-22 °C air, 26-36 °C track

Sauber F1 Team drivers Esteban Gutiérrez and Nico Hülkenberg made good progress in the first two free practice sessions for the Chinese Grand Prix in Shanghai. They tested several aerodynamic parts which seem to work well. The goal now is to further optimise the package for the remainder of the weekend. Esteban lost 20 minutes in the second session due to an oil leak, but despite this he was satisfied with his day on a track which was new for him.

MEDIUM AND SOFT PIRELLI P ZERO COMPOUNDS FOR CHINA
Milan, April 8, 2013 – Pirelli has nominated the P Zero White medium and P Zero Yellow soft tyres for China: the first time that this combination makes an appearance this year. China is well-known for its smooth and sweeping track layout with moderate ambient and track temperatures, which makes it ideal territory for this combination. The flexibility of the medium and soft compounds also mean that several strategies are open to the teams, and in the past the top positions have been decided through the use of extremely wide-ranging race tactics. Rain – a notable feature of the first two races held so far this year – is also not an uncommon occurrence in China, so we could see the appearance of the Cinturato Green intermediate and Cinturato Blue full wet tyres once more.
