United States Grand Prix Practice

31.10.14
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: On the whole a good day for us – we completed our programme and looked strong on both high and low fuel runs which is encouraging. Having said that we can expect different conditions over the weekend because the track always evolves the more running we do and we’re also expecting different wind strengths and directions alongside slightly cooler conditions. I think we have a competitive package so a prime target is to make sure that we stay on top of the track evolution. [Read More!]

Second Practice Session: Position: 4, Best Time: 1:40.390, Laps: 30
“It was tricky out there today, the wind makes it difficult; it’s quite an open circuit, so any form of cross wind or tail wind upsets the car a lot – we saw a few spins in FP2 from a few guys. We got the car in a good window to work with and hopefully tomorrow we can find a bit more speed. We didn’t run much this morning but in FP2 we ended up in the top five and the long run looked reasonable, so I think we had a pretty good afternoon.” [Read More!]

UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX - RACE PREVIEW

THURSDAY 30 OCTOBER – SUNDAY 2 NOVEMBER
AUSTIN, UNITED STATES
The Circuit of the Americas is the track that Formula One has been waiting for in America. Its eclectic mix of corners, both fast and slow, makes it technically demanding for the drivers and provides the American fans with a fantastic opportunity to see F1 cars driven at the limit. The circuit’s design takes inspiration from many of the great corners around the world. In sector one there is a sequence of fast corners reminiscent of Maggotts and Becketts at Silverstone, and the 180-degree right-hander towards the end of the lap is similar to Turn 8 at Istanbul Park. The track’s signature bend, however, is Turn 1. It’s approached up a 133-foot incline, not dissimilar in steepness to Eau Rouge at Spa-Francorchamps, and the apex is blind. It’s a tricky corner and a great overtaking spot. Valtteri Bottas scored his first World Championship points at this race last year and he’ll be hoping for more this season! [Read More!]

AHEAD OF THE US GRAND PRIX

Daniel Ricciardo
Hand on heart, this is probably the date on the calendar I look forward to the most. I’ve loved every minute of being in Austin: when they picked this place for the US Grand Prix, they absolutely nailed it. The city is awesome. I love listening to live music and this is a great place for that, plus Texas feels like real America, and that’s something I’ve really enjoyed just sinking into the last two seasons. And then, there’s the important bit. The Circuit of the Americas, in my opinion, is the best of the new breed of circuits. The nature of the corners is interesting. It’s also a very busy track where you don’t get much respite. The first sector is very special and that first turn, blind up the big hill is like nothing else in F1. It’s also a good example of the excitement a late-apex can create: you can have a really good lunge there. They’ve done a very good job. [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – A RACE FOR JULES

Marco Mattiacci: “Once again, we find ourselves confronting a result that is a long way off our goals, but today, we must congratulate Mercedes who, after five years of hard work, have taken a well deserved Constructors’ title. The back-to-back Japan-Russia trip has been a difficult one for our team, both on and off the track. In both races, we have learned a lot that will be useful for the future, in terms of how to improve on a technical level, but also when it comes to safety. I’m sure the final three races will provide an opportunity to try and get the most out of the team and the car, in order to end the season achieving better results. While my thoughts and those of everyone are still with Jules, today I would like to thank Luca di Montezemolo, at what has been the final Grand Prix under his Presidency at Ferrari. “The first few laps were pretty hectic and we lost a few places at the start. We will have to have a look at that, it’s nearly the end of the season now, but we haven’t had many good starts so that’s a bit frustrating. Starting the race the tyre was already blistered, it had quite a bit from qualifying, so it wasn’t looking too healthy and the first stint made it worse; I could see it starting to come apart, so we had to pit quiet early. Then on the prime the tyre lasted well and we had good pace and could match Alonso, but couldn’t get past. RUSSIAN GP 2014 QUALI: TEAM REACTION

October 11, 2014
It was a fantastic day here in Sochi! Best result of the season with Daniil's 5th place and both cars in top ten with Jev starting from 9th position on the grid because of Magnussen's gearbox penalty. Here our team's reaction at the end of today's Qualifying at Sochi Autodrom. [Read More!]

2014 Russian Grand Prix – Qualifying

Sochi, October 11, 2014 – Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton has claimed pole position for the first Russian Grand Prix using the P Zero Yellow soft tyre, nominated along with the P Zero White medium tyre at Sochi. The Englishman set a time of 1m38.513s using the soft tyre in Q3, ahead of his team mate Nico Rosberg. This was the ninth Mercedes one-two in qualifying this season. [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – HARDER THAN USUAL

Fernando Alonso: “Today’s qualifying was more difficult than usual, or at least more complicated compared to the last two race weekends, when we had been able to fight with the front runners. So far here, we have not been competitive, even though the car seems okay and on the set-up front, we’ve changed almost nothing. We can’t single out any particular bad point because we are losing in all the sectors. The truth is just that the cars ahead of us were quicker. Here, the grip seems to improve with every lap and on top of that, reducing the pit lane speed to 60 km/h all points to a one-stop strategy. Even if the Safety Car could mix things up a bit, I think tomorrow, the start and the first corner could define the outcome of the race, and so we must prepare to tackle the early stages as well as possible.” [Read More!]

2014 RUSSIAN GRAND PRIX – QUALIFYING

“P4 and P6 amount to our best cumulative qualifying performance of the year, but we’re nonetheless left feeling somewhat frustrated”

Sochi, Saturday October 11
Today was a day of mixed fortunes. The team made some imperfect decisions in FP3 this morning, eventuating in suboptimised car-development ahead of qualifying, but a reasonably successful recovery was achieved. The result was P4 for Jenson Button and P6 for Kevin Magnussen, which will unfortunately become P11 following a five-place grid penalty imposed in respect of a gearbox failure in FP3. [Read More!]

Russian Grand Prix Qualifying

11.10.14
Valtteri Bottas qualified third and Felipe Massa eighteenth for tomorrow’s inaugural Russian Grand Prix.
Valtteri showed strong pace and pushed the Mercedes cars hard for a front row position, but ultimately his tyres went away in the final corners on his final run.
A problem with Felipe’s car in Q1 led to a loss of power which meant that he had to settle for 18th on the grid for tomorrow’s race. [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – QUALIFYING

Saturday 11 October 2014
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 7th, (3rd Practice – P4, 1:39.755)
”It’s tough to get a lap together around here, for a new track it’s really high in grip but at the same time it’s hard to read the grip; it’s not such a natural feeling that it gives us behind the wheel, but it’s fun and a new challenge. We were trying to get the fronts in and get grip out of them and on the last lap I lost the rear. We’re better off than we were yesterday, but I was hoping for more than seventh.” [Read More!]

RUSSIAN GP – DISCOVERING SOCHI

Fernando Alonso: “The track is very unusual and I didn’t think that Formula 1 had already got such a large following here. Also surprising today was the good level of grip from the track surface, which is unusual on a brand new circuit. From this point of view, I felt comfortable right from the first lap and that helped a lot when it came to today’s most important job, namely learning the track. We worked a lot on set-up and found the two compounds had behaved in similar fashion and tyre performance improved as the laps went by. The track is very hard on brakes, but that is a specific thing we can work on this evening to be well prepared for qualifying.” [Read More!]

“Does getting back in the car help us after what’s happened? It does and it doesn’t. It helps to get your head elsewhere and focus on the day job – looking after the best possible set up and comparing the tyres and learning the new track, it keeps you occupied. But on the other hand it’s only been a couple of days, so it’s quite fresh and difficult. It looks like we will struggle here; it’s a nice track, but maybe not made for us.” [Read More!]

Russian Grand Prix Practice

10.10.14
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: This is an interesting circuit and we’ve had a positive practice today. It’s very much a low speed track, with no real high speed corners and our primary focus was to get the set-up of the cars right and to get the drivers honed in to the right trajectory. We still have a bit more to find on this but that was always going to be the case given this is a new circuit. The car balance is looking good for the first day and the car performance has looked good on both low and high fuel runs. Valtteri had a problem with his tyre blankets this morning which hindered his run time in FP1 but this didn’t affect the overall run programme in the end. The compounds are looking very hard for this track but this is the same for everyone and we need to analyse how this will affect the race weekend. The tyre performance might change quickly so we need to be open minded with our strategy and react to this when needed. [Read More!]

Weather: sunny and dry, 19-22°C air, 18-33°C track
Today it was the first time since Jules Bianchi’s serious accident last weekend in Suzuka, that the engines have been started again. On the new circuit built in the Olympic park in Sochi, the Formula One teams prepared for the Russian Grand Prix, which is a new round on the Formula One calendar. Alongside regular driver Adrian Sutil, Sauber F1 test driver Sergey Sirotkin was taking part for the first time in the morning practice session during a Grand Prix weekend. The 18-year-old Russian drove without making any mistakes and was able to improve consistently. In the afternoon, Esteban Gutiérrez was back in the cockpit of the C33 and he focused on learning the new track as quickly as possible. With stickers on the cars and helmets, the teams were remembering the seriously injured Jules Bianchi. Our thoughts are with him and his family. [Read More!]

JAPANESE GP – A SAD SUNDAY IN SUZUKA

Marco Mattiacci: “For our team, this weekend was unfortunately characterized by reliability problems, yesterday on Kimi’s car and today on Fernando’s. With Kimi, we paid the price for not having been able to get his car configured as well as possible in the third free practice session. That meant he suffered with balance problems throughout the race. Today, with Fernando, we had a bit more of a chance and what happened today just underlines the fact that we must improve the car. However, at the moment, all this is of secondary importance and all our thoughts are only with Jules Bianchi.” [Read More!]

2014 Japanese Grand Prix – Race

Suzuka, October 5, 2014 – Lewis Hamilton won a prematurely-ended Japanese Grand Prix to extend his championship lead, using the Cinturato Blue wet tyres and Cinturato Green intermediate. The rainy conditions, as a result of the Phanfone typhoon, meant that the hard and medium slick tyres nominated for the weekend were not used at all. 2014 JAPANESE GRAND PRIX

“For me, the race doesn’t really matter today.”
Suzuka, Sunday October 5
The entire McLaren team’s thoughts are with Jules Bianchi, Jules’ family and the Marussia team after today’s accident.
For McLaren, it was a disappointing race.
At the start, Jenson Button quickly capitalised on the mixed conditions – he was the first driver to make the jump to Intermediate tyres after the Safety Car peeled in, a move that elevated him to third place, a position he was able to hold for most of the race, until he was delayed by the need to elongate a pit-stop in order to accommodate a steering wheel change. JAPANESE GP – QUALIFYING

Saturday 4 October 2014

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 6th, (3rd Practice – P6, 1:35.086)
”I was quite surprised by Sebastian’s news, I didn’t know before this morning; it’s two pretty big changes for the team, Sebastian leaving and Daniil coming in, but Seb’s done his work here at Red Bull and he feels it’s time to move on. I’m glad I got one year to race with him and see how he works, I heard a lot about his work ethic before the season and it was good to see that this year and to go against him. Daniil’s coming in and I expect him to be quick – I know him pretty well and it should be good fun working with him. I’m happy with how we bounced back in qualifying after my mistake yesterday, I thought we would be better here, but I think sixth is realistically what we could do today. If it rains tomorrow then we should be looking a bit better” [Read More!]
