ABU DHABI GP – RACE

Sunday 23 November 2014
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 4th, Start Position: Pit Lane
“Yeah really happy, I think it was pretty much a faultless race from all sides, from the strategy, to myself and the pit stops, everything was good so we did everything we needed to. I had fun passing, it wasn’t boring out there, so it was pretty much what I asked for. One spot better would have been nice, but fourth is really cool from the pit lane. It’s been pretty much a perfect season, as perfect as it can be without holding a world title, so no real regrets, no complaints. It’s nice to not only start the season well, but to finish it well also and I think all the way through it was good - we had a strong summer as well, so the start, middle and end were pretty good!” [Read More!]

On my second lap, the car just stopped unexpectedly and even though the marshals did their best to push the car back to the pits in time to get it back out on track, the work took the mechanics longer than expected. In the first session, we managed to complete our programme and the car behaved as expected, but the temperature, much hotter than it will be in qualifying and the race, means the data we acquired is not that relevant. For the same reason, tomorrow’s third session won’t be that useful and that means the first lap to match conditions in qualifying and the race, in the dark in the afternoon, will be the first lap in Q1. We definitely won’t be that well prepared but all the same, we will try our best as usual.” [Read More!]

ABU DHABI GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

21 November 2014
SEBASTIAN VETTEL
First Practice Session: Position: 4, Best Time: 1:45.334, Laps: 30
Second Practice Session: Position: 4, Best Time: 1:42.959, Laps: 30
“I think we have improved the car today, but we can still improve more. The super soft tyre seems pretty good for one lap, but I don’t think they lasted very long, for everyone, and then we focused mainly on the harder compound. McLaren has made a step forward the last couple of races and the nature of the track here maybe suits them a bit better than other tracks, but it’s Friday so I guess we will find out tomorrow. I don’t really want to interfere with Mercedes in the race. It would be nice to race them and beat them, but I think realistically they are a bit far away. I want to get everything out of myself and the car and make sure I finish fourth in the Championship.” [Read More!]

ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX – PRACTICE

21.11.2014
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We had some issues with the bodywork during first practice, but the team did a really good job to correct that and fix the problem ready for FP2. It was a fairly standard second session and the car had some good pace. We are looking for a little more consistency on the long runs, but other than that we are happy with the progress we have made. The second session was a lot more representative of the race and qualifying in terms of the weather and time of day, so it is pleasing that we completed our programme then. [Read More!]

ABU DHABI 2014 GRAND PRIXVIEW

November 19, 2014
Eight months on from the opening round in Australia, it’s finale time, as the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, the 19th round of the season, brings the curtain down on the first year of racing under the most radical rule changes in several decades. There are many factors that make this race unique, starting with the fact it is the only Grand Prix on the calendar named after a city – the capital of the United Arab Emirates – rather than a country. It is the only twilight race, starting in bright sunshine and ending under floodlights at night time. [Read More!]

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Preview, November 20-23, 2014

Milan, November 17, 2014 – The final grand prix of the season will take place in Abu Dhabi, using the soft and supersoft tyre: a step softer than last year’s nomination of medium and soft. Yas Marina is a circuit that Pirelli knows well, having completed some of its private testing there before entering Formula One back in 2011, with Abu Dhabi being a well-known venue for official tests as well. This year is no exception, with the final two-day test of the season taking place straight after the grand prix, from Tuesday to Wednesday. [Read More!]

ABU DHABI: AT THE DOUBLE FOR THE FINAL

Maranello, 17 November –Sunday sees the sixth running of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. The race has always been held over 55 laps of the 5.554 kilometre-long Yas Marina circuit. This event in the United Arab Emirates will be the first ever Formula 1 Grand Prix to have double points attributed. In fact, while it’s never happened before in this category that one race is worth more than another, it’s a formula in use in other forms of racing as both the Indy 500 in the USA and the Le Mans 24 Hours endurance event, count for double points. The first race in Abu Dhabi was held in 2009 and was won by Sebastian Vettel in the Red Bull.

ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX - RACE PREVIEW

THURSDAY 20 – SUNDAY 23 NOVEMBER
YAS MARINA, ABU DHABI
For the third time in the circuit’s six-year history, Yas Marina hosts the Formula One season finale. This promises to be a race to remember, with double points on offer (50 for a win, instead of 25) and lots of potential movement in the points standings. The circuit layout contains three distinct sections: some fast corners in sector one, long straights in sector two and tight corners in sector three, reminiscent of a street circuit. Car set-up is a compromise between straight-line speed and achieving good traction out of the slow corners, and engineers have to be wary of the cooling track temperatures as the sun goes down in what is the only twilight race of the year. Overtaking should be possible in the two DRS zones, and with so many points at stake this weekend it’s fair to expect plenty of action. [Read More!]

AHEAD OF THE ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX

Daniel Ricciardo
Like many modern circuits it’s obvious that a lot of thought has gone into making the Yas Marina Circuit as safe as it possibly can be. Of course that’s absolutely the right thing to do but the consequence is that there’s lots of run-off. It’s the way it’s got to be but you never feel like you’re putting the car on the line. However Yas still manages to get the adrenaline going. I really like the third sector, around and under the hotel. It’s got a bit more of a street circuit vibe and it’s good fun. Plus there’s the whole twilight racing thing. That’s a great idea; it seems to give the whole place a really good atmosphere and is quite different to anywhere else. [Read More!]

2014 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX

“A fantastic race”
Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Sunday November 9
Today’s was a typically frantic and exciting Brazilian Grand Prix.
The race was dominated by tyre wear, the front-runners opting to run a three-stop strategy to best manage degradation. Jenson Button managed the situation superbly, was always able to push when required, and showed excellent pace throughout. He quickly settled into fifth place behind the two Mercedes and Williams cars, then established himself in fourth when Valtteri Bottas was delayed at his second stop. BRAZILIAN GP – A RISK THAT PAID OFF

Marco Mattiacci: “I believe this weekend ended on a positive note for the team, with both our drivers finishing higher than their grid positions to bring home important points. With Kimi we decided to risk putting him to a two stop strategy and he was able to show that, if he feels comfortable with his car, he can get the most out of himself in terms of managing the tyres. We are disappointed to have lost a few seconds at his pit stop and we take away the lesson that we must improve in every area that can affect performance. As for Fernando, he produced an equally perfect race and in the late duel with his team-mate he was clear headed and precise in his driving. Clearly, fighting for the places we secured today is not our aim, but the team continues to improve day by day as we work on getting back to fighting at the front of the field.” [Read More!]

2014 Brazilian Grand Prix – Qualifying

Sao Paulo, November 8, 2014 – Nico Rosberg’s pole position for the Brazilian Grand Prix, using the P Zero Yellow soft tyres, was the fastest-ever pole lap ever seen in the 41-year history of Interlagos. Rosberg set a fastest time of 1m10.023s in the final qualifying session, beating Ruben Barrichello’s pole record of 1m10.646s from 2004. Rosberg’s time was even close to the all-time fastest lap of Interlagos, which was set by Barrichello in first qualifying the same year: 1m09.822s. Mercedes also equalled Red Bull’s record for 18 pole positions in one season, while Rosberg claimed the pole position trophy for this year. [Read More!]

BRAZILIAN GP – TAKING A RISK ON FRIDAY

Fernando Alonso: “Today we knew that the power unit had reached the end of its cycle. So there was a risk we wouldn’t finish the second session, but this was part of the programme we have been on for a few races now. It’s always a shame not being able to use all the time available, even though I don’t think it affected our work too much. The new track surface produced a lot of grip and it was extremely difficult to put together a good lap, because tyre behaviour changed from corner to corner. With a new surface, what effect the rain will have is always an unknown factor, so it’s impossible to make predictions. That would have been the case at Sochi too, but it didn’t rain there, so it means we have to be ready for every eventuality.” [Read More!]

2014 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX – FREE PRACTICE

“With some hard work tonight, we should be able to make significant improvements”
Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace, Friday November 7
Kevin spent the first half of the morning session conducting detailed aerodynamic studies, his car running with a large measuring rake behind each front wheel. He continued his progress into FP2, but never felt fully happy with the overall pace and feel of the car.
Jenson had a disappointing morning – his car suffered an early electrical failure that forced the team to spend the rest of the morning replacing his ERS pack. While they concluded the work minutes before the end of the session, unfortunately they still weren’t quite able to get him out of the garage in time. [Read More!]

Brazilian Grand Prix Practice

07.11.14
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We had two fairly busy sessions today with three red flags interrupting the running, but I’m optimistic for the weekend with the car responding well on low and high fuel loads. We found that the rear option tyres were graining but this is normal in these very high temperatures and seemed to affect everyone, with no such issues with the prime tyre. We expect the weather to be very different over the weekend so we need to take what we have learned today on board but be completely prepared for a very different track tomorrow. This was Felipe Nasr’s last FP1 session for us and he did another good job, providing very good feedback and completing the test programme diligently so a thank you to him for his hard work this year. BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX RACE PREVIEW

THURSDAY 6 – SUNDAY 9 NOVEMBER
SAO PAULO, BRAZIL
RACE 18 OF 19
Brazil’s love affair with Formula One enters its fifth decade in 2014, and it shows no sign of waning. Interlagos continues to be a sell-out every year and many of those fans will be cheering our very own Felipe Massa, who began his racing career at Interlagos. The track is one of the shortest on the F1 calendar and it’s also one of the most breathless, due to it being situated 800m above sea level. The low atmospheric pressure has an effect on engine power and aerodynamics, and the bumpy surface tests suspension to the limit. Physically, its anti-clockwise direction and long final corner takes its toll on the drivers’ necks. Races at Interlagos are rarely dull, due to the circuit offering a number of overtaking opportunities, including the famous Senna ‘S’ at the end of the pit straight, and there’s always the chance of rain to mix things up. AHEAD OF THE BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX

Sebastian Vettel
In Sao Paulo I have taken part in races which we will always remember, for different reasons. Like in 2009, when we almost took the title in the last race of the season. In the end it wasn’t enough and Jenson Button became world champion. I was very disappointed, but it was also an important experience for me. On the positive side we knew that we fought until the end and gave everything we could. 2010 was my first year on the Sao Paulo podium: a truly unforgettable race and thinking about Brazil 2012, I spun on the first lap and found myself at the back of the field. Suddenly the title seemed so far away. I worked myself back up through the field position by position and at the end it was unbelievable: we were World Champions again. In 2013, the title was already secured, but as it was my ninth win in a row, I will always remember this race. In Sao Paulo we drive anti-clockwise and the track has severe bumps. One of the best chances to overtake is the first chicane, the Senna-S. You have to be careful here, especially at the start as it’s very tight. The left-right-left combination looks a bit like a screwdriver and you are going downhill, so you have to be patient with the steering. [Read More!]

Brazilian Grand Prix Preview

Interlagos overview
Rémi Taffin, Renault Sport F1 head of track operations
The main factors of Interlagos are the altitude and heat, both of which are potentially destructive characteristics for the new Power Units. Whereas the altitude once gave the cars and engines an easier ride as less power was produced, it now works against us. A turbocharged engine pressurises the ambient air to the same level inside the turbocharger and compressor, ensuring there is always the same amount of oxygen content in the air inside the engine. With around 10% less oxygen in the air in Brazil, the turbo has to spin at a much higher speed to generate the same power, rotating at very close to its maximum. We can consider the ‘high’ races such as Spa and Austria as interim tests, but at 800m above sea level, Interlagos is another step (before Mexico in 2015, that is) so we conduct specific tests in the dynos at Viry to check settings, firstly to ensure reliability and then to get the performance settings right. US GP 2014: TEAM REACTION

November 2, 2014
Our Team''s reaction, after the US Grand Prix:
Jean-Eric Vergne (STR9-01)
Race
Position: 10th
"It was an exciting race, but difficult at the same time. In the final stages I absolutely wanted to gain positions. I saw the opportunity to overtake Romain (Grosjean) and I decided to go for it. When he closed the door it was just too late. At the end, this is racing and you have to fight as much as you can. I like fighting, so it was good fun. It's great to be in the points, especially after a difficult weekend, with not much running. We have the car to do well and I'm happy that we do not have to wait too much before being back in the car next week in Brazil, where hopefully we'll be able score more points." [Read More!]

UNITED STATES GP – A CHALLENGING SUNDAY

Marco Mattiacci: “After all the news this week, today, it was particularly pleasing to see that the grandstands were packed. The response of the American public was an encouraging sign, which shows how much the interest in our sport is growing in a country where we would like to strengthen its presence. It was a shame we could not give our fans a better result, with a Ferrari capable of fighting for the top places. Today, with Fernando, we were able to maintain his start position, while Kimi had some of those difficulties that we are working hard to solve as a team, to ensure he has a better car. 2014 United States Grand Prix – Qualifying

Austin, November 1, 2014 – Using the P Zero Yellow soft tyres, Nico Rosberg set a pole position time at the Circuit of the Americas that was three tenths of a second faster than last year’s pole. Rosberg’s time of 1m36.067s, set right at the end of Q3, comfortably eclipsed the 1m36.338s pole position time in 2013, when the cars had bigger engines and more downforce. [Read More!]

Close, but no cigar

Near misses in Austin
Austin saw one of the best qualifying results in 2014 for the team as fresh impetus in a revised format saw Pastor take his season-best result of 11th, while tyre locking meant Romain missed the chance to make it two cars in Q2 and qualified eighteenth.

While it was a case of mixed fortunes between the two E22s, there was an extra boost for the team following Pastor’s promotion to tenth after Jenson Button’s grid penalty. [Read More!]

UNITED STATES GP – AVERAGE VALUES

Fernando Alonso: “I think that this was a good qualifying and, looking at the times of the cars ahead of me, I don’t think I could have done much more. Before coming here, we had thought about changing the power unit, but then we opted for one we had already used, so as not to start from the pit lane. The track surface is much better than in past years, with a lot more grip, but at the same time, there’s more tyre degradation so a two stopper is inevitable. The temperatures have dropped from yesterday to today, but I don’t think this factor, along with the expectation that the wind direction will change for tomorrow, will affect the strategy. The races are long and anything can happen, including on the reliability front, as has especially been the case this season.” [Read More!]

2014 United States Grand Prix - Qualifying

Austin - 01/11/2014
Nico Rosberg took pole position for tomorrow's United States Grand Prix with Lewis Hamilton completing a MERCEDES AMG PETRONAS front row lock out at the Circuit of the Americas.
The team scored its 16th pole position and 10th front-row lock-out in 17 races this afternoon at the Circuit of the Americas
Nico's pole lap was 0.271s faster than the 2013 pole time set by Sebastian Vettel 12 months ago

2014 UNITED STATES GRAND PRIX – QUALIFYING

“This is where we are with the car right now”
Circuit of the Americas, Saturday November 1
Jenson Button and Kevin Magnussen were remarkably evenly-matched throughout all three of this afternoon’s qualifying sessions, finally finishing just 0.051s apart after their final runs in Q3. However, Jenson has been given a five-place grid penalty (for a premature gearbox change) and will therefore drop to 12th – between Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg. As a result, Kevin will start seventh.
Since multiple tyre stops are predicted for tomorrow, there ought to be ample opportunity for strategy to play a role in mixing up the competitive order. [Read More!]

UNITED STATES GP – QUALIFYING

Saturday 1 November 2014
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 5th, (3rd Practice – P6, 1:38.927)
”I’m pretty happy with the top five, realistically we’re fighting for the last spot on the podium, if Mercedes have a clean race, and we’ve put ourselves in a good position for that. We were close to Felipe, but hopefully the clean side of the grid will help me out a bit, so we’ll see what happens. I’d say we’re better on tyres than the Williams, but their straight line speed makes that advantage disappear. Hopefully we’ll have some good clean battles on track tomorrow, the circuit certainly allows for that and provides some good opportunities, so hopefully we can have some fun!” [Read More!]
