Formula 1 European Grand Prix – Practice – Friday

17.06.2016
Weather: sunny/overcast and dry, 25-28°C air, 31-43°C track

In the practice sessions ahead of the European Grand Prix on the new Baku City Circuit, the Sauber F1 Team was able to run a total of 89 laps despite having issues on both Sauber C35-Ferraris. In FP1 Felipe Nasr (49 laps) had issues with a set of tyres. Due to an exhaust problem, the mechanics had to change the power unit of Marcus Ericsson’s car between FP1 and FP2. Nevertheless, the Swede was able to run 40 laps. All in all, both drivers have a good impression about the Formula One debut on the Baku City Circuit in the capital of Azerbaijan. [Read More!]

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: The first impressions of Baku are that it’s clearly a good track and definitely offers us a good opportunity to be near the front. I like the circuit layout and, apart from an issue with the kerbs in FP1 and FP2 which will hopefully be resolved by tomorrow, I think the organisers have done a very good job. [Read More!]

2016 Formula 1 Grand Prix of Europe, Preview

Q&A with Vijay Mallya
Team Principal, Dr Vijay Mallya, looks ahead to the latest addition to the Formula One calendar.

VJM: “The race in Canada was another strong indication of the good steps forward we have been taking since the start of the season. We showed good pace all weekend and delivered a solid performance in the race. This result increased our advantage over our direct rivals in the constructors’ championship and consolidates our fifth position. We now have a very quick turnaround to get ready for Baku – a big challenge, especially as it’s a new addition to the calendar.

CANADIAN GP – RACE

12 JUNE 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 4th, Start Position: 5th
“We did what we could today and that was a great job. We wanted to finish on the podium in front of the Williams but soon realised we were suffering with a bit too much tyre degradation. I think a little bit of rain could have helped us today. At the beginning I saved my tyres and fuel as I knew I could not stay with the front two. When Daniel got close behind I then decided it was time to push. I am very satisfied with my performance but also with the new power unit, you could see it was hard for the Mercedes to try and pass on the long straight so we are making good progress. The last ten laps I really enjoyed, I would actually say they were the hardest ten laps of my life. I was in fourth for a very long time so didn’t want to give up that position. It was a very hard battle at the end of the race, his [Rosberg] pace was very strong but we managed to keep ahead and then the last lap was pretty spectacular. After Monaco it’s nice to leave this race with a big smile on my face. Now looking ahead to Baku it’s a new experience for everyone so we have to wait and see how the grip levels are but today was definitely positive for us.”

Gutiérrez to Start 14th, Grosjean 15th in Canadian GP

Jun 11, 2016
Cool weather and intermittent drizzle greeted teams on Saturday at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal as they continued preparation for Sunday’s Canadian Grand Prix. It was a turnabout from Friday’s two practice sessions, where sunshine bathed the 4.361-kilometer (2.710-mile), 14-turn track amid warm temperatures.
Final practice allowed Haas F1 Team drivers to record a total of 30 laps – 16 by Esteban Gutiérrez and 14 by Romain Grosjean. Both made their installation laps on the Pirelli P Zero Yellow soft tire before switching to the P Zero Purple ultrasoft tire for the remainder of the session.

2016 Formula 1 Canadian Grand Prix, Saturday

11 June 2016
Jolyon Palmer fell just 0.015secs off Q2 today as the leading Renault Sport Formula One Team driver in qualifying for the Canadian Grand Prix. Q1 started dry, but gentle drizzle made an appearance late in the session. Jolyon’s was the only car from the team attempting qualifying as damage sustained to Kevin Magnussen’s R.S.16 in the morning practice session meant the Dane was an observer rather than a participant in the afternoon.

CANADIAN GRAND PRIX – MONTREAL CIRCUIT, 11 JUNE

Kimi Raikkonen: “Since yesterday evening we did a good job and improved a lot the behavior of the car, but today it was still not easy to put the car where I wanted. It was a hectic qualifying session because of the weather conditions and I was not very happy with the driving. I had some issues here and there, I struggled in turn 10 all the times to make the front turn, and it was hard to put the lap together. It has not been an easy weekend so far and if you finish P6 there’s still work to be done, but I’m sure that for the race tomorrow the car will be better”. [Read More!]

CANADIAN GP – QUALIFYING

11 June 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 4th, 1:13.166 (Practice 3 – P6, 1:14.487)
“I’m pretty happy. This weekend was steady – I think we built up to it and found a better rhythm in qualifying, and as always it’s the most important session, so I made sure I got it all together and in the end I’m pretty happy with fourth. My pace is only a few tenths from pole which is pretty good around here. I was quite lucky on my last lap in the last chicane, I hit the wall pretty hard and luckily it got me to the line and I didn’t lose too much time. The start is important here, but you can pass. I think we’ve got pretty good straight line speed now so we’re in a position to overtake. Tomorrow’s going to be cool, if not wet, so with those conditions it could be anyone’s race. Hopefully it’s a five or six way fight – that could be a lot of fun. I think being on the right tyre at the right time is crucial. It’s about being smart, but being quick at the same time, so it’s worth taking some risks.”

Canadian GP Qualifying

11.06.16
Qualifying Notes
Valtteri Bottas qualified seventh and Felipe Massa eighth for the Canadian Grand Prix
Both cars made it comfortably through into Q2 and Q3, despite the tricky overcast conditions
Felipe was fastest through the speed trap during qualifying at 336.7kph, Valtteri was second fastest at 336.6kph
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: I think we got what we could out of the car today. It’s disappointing to come here and have the fourth quickest car, but at this time, that is the fact. We know this and so we need to focus on improving it. We’ve qualified on the fourth row with both cars so therefore I think we’ve extracted what we could. On the whole I think it’s been a reasonable qualifying. We’ve got the cars set-up for the race as well, which is good, and both drivers did a good job. Felipe did a really great job as we were not able to give him the most performance on his car due to a shortage of parts after the accident yesterday. I think without that we may have been able to get in front of Raikkonen. It’s still all to play for tomorrow. We have got a good race car, as we saw on Friday, so we’ve just got to race hard from there and get a good haul of points.

2016 Canadian Grand Prix – qualifying

“It’ll be maximum attack tomorrow”

Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, Saturday June 11
Fernando Alonso underlined the burgeoning competitiveness of the McLaren-Honda package by qualifying 10th for tomorrow’s Canadian Grand Prix, the third successive race in which the team has reached the Q3 phase of the qualifying session.
Team-mate Jenson Button proved equally competitive all weekend, but lost out on a critical tow down the back straight that would have improved his chances of also making the top 10.
If the weather remains dry tomorrow – which it may or may not – both drivers will be looking for points-scoring positions at the end of what is usually one of the most unpredictable and exciting grands prix of the year. [Read More!]

Canadian GP Practice

10/06/2016
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: FP1 was a little bit fraught with what happened on Felipe’s car. The DRS didn’t close under braking, we’re still investigating as to why, but that then left Felipe with a lack of rear downforce under braking and he spun causing quite a lot of damage. We did a very good job to get the car built for FP2, where we tried to recover some of the test programme that we missed out on in FP1 on Felipe’s car. I think he’s recovered admirably and done a good job, as has Valtteri, who has got through most of his Friday programme. There’s a lot for us to take away from these two sessions between the two cars. I think overall we can be quite happy as we’re much more competitive here than we have been in the last two races, both on low and high fuel runs. I don’t think we’ve exercised anywhere near the limit of the car, which is a good thing. We’ve got bits and pieces to do tonight but overall it’s a competitive package we just have to make sure that we have a good Saturday and more importantly come away with a good haul of points.

10 June 2016

First Practice Session: Position: 11, Best Time: 1:16.734, Laps: 28
Second Practice Session: Position: 5, Best Time: 1:15.168, Laps: 43
“Obviously nice to be driving again for sure, and it’s a nice circuit – I enjoy it here. I think the day was ok; we can still find some more speed so we’ll work hard tonight to hopefully find some good solutions which can put us towards the top four tomorrow and close to Ferrari. Mercedes looked strong today, their long run pace was probably more impressive than their short run pace so that’s where I think we need to improve. Our long runs can be better for both me and Max, so that’s what we’ll look at tonight. On Sunday the weather looks like it could change, so we will wait and see as it will affect things. I expect the gap to Lewis to be less than a second tomorrow, how much less I’m not sure but I think we can close the gap quite a lot from today.”

Q&A with Vijay Mallya
