German Grand Prix - Hockenheim, 31 July

Maurizio Arrivabene: ”While one week ago, in Hungary, our race pace was totally respectable, here in Hockenheim we experienced again some issues with both mechanical grip and downforce, which unfortunately are not unknown to us. Obviously, we must react as quickly as possible to cure these problems and most of all we must lose not to too much time in the process. Having been jumped in the Constructors’ championship only pushes us to react, and perform better in the second part of the season, after the summer break.”

2016 German Grand Prix

“Eighth was as good as it was going to get today”

Hockenheimring, Sunday July 31
The McLaren-Honda team heads into Formula 1’s summer break having scored an encouraging eighth-place result in the German Grand Prix – the team’s seventh points-scoring finish of the season.

Both Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso ran measured races inside the top 10 for almost the entire duration, but whereas Jenson was able to capitalise in the closing laps – moving from ninth to eighth two laps from home – Fernando fell back, dropping from 10th to 12th at the chequer.

2016 Formula 1 German Grand Prix, Sunday

31 July 2016
Renault Sport Formula One Team didn’t enjoy the German Grand Prix that it wanted today at the Hockenheimring. Starting 14th on the grid, Jolyon Palmer made a decent start, however flat-spotted his tyres then made contact with a rival on the first lap. This necessitated an early pit stop, and a tough race pushing hard from behind ensued. Kevin Magnussen worked up the order early on, although better-than-expected performance from three-stopping rivals meant his hard work was undone in the latter stages of the 67 lap race. Kevin finished in sixteenth, Jolyon in nineteenth.

Haas F1 Team Drivers Rally to Finish 11th and 13th in German Grand Prix

Jul 31, 2016
Haas F1 Team drivers Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean drove to hard-fought 11th- and 13th-place finishes, respectively, in the German Grand Prix Sunday at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg.
While the effort did not yield a point-paying result, it was still a strong showing from the American team as both drivers had to rally from deep within the 22-car field. Gutiérrez got bottlenecked at the start and dropped to 18th while Grosjean started the 67-race from 20th after incurring a five-place grid penalty for a gearbox change on Saturday.

GERMAN GP – RACE

31 JULY 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 2nd, Start Position: 3rd
“I’m very pleased with today obviously. To beat one Mercedes is nice but for both cars to beat one Mercedes and the pole-sitter was really good. In the first part of the race I was sitting in third and the pace was okay but I think I really came to life in the second half of the race and that’s when I was able to show a bit more speed and capture second place. It was the best we could do today and I’m now happy to go into the summer break with another podium in the bag. For me the strategy worked very well, I was comfortable on the supersofts and it worked out my pace was better in the end with that tyre. Drinking out of the shoe on the podium is an Australian thing. It’s called a “shoey”. I said if I win a race this year I’ll do it, but just in case, I thought I’ll do it next time I’m on the podium. The last few races I got a bit more out of the race weekends and it’s nice to get a bit of momentum now before the summer break. Just to stand up there on the podium is the best feeling in the world.”

2016 GERMAN GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 31/07/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 14th
“It wasn’t the best of races… Starting from P15 because of the three position grid penalty meant it was never going to be easy, but we had a good start and the first part of the race wasn’t’ that bad. We were able to overtake quite a few cars, make a good recovery and get very close to the points positions, racing in P11. It even looked like another comeback was possible, but we lost quite a lot of time during our first pit-stop, and that cost us the places we had gained earlier out on track. From then onwards we were unfortunately stuck in P14, which is definitely not where we wanted to be. I’d say it’s not the perfect way to end the first half of the season but in general I’m happy with my performance so far this year – now it’s time for a well-deserved break but I can’t wait to go back racing again in a few weeks’ time!”

German Grand Prix

31/07/16
• Valtteri Bottas finished 9th whilst Felipe Massa retired from the German Grand Prix
• Felipe started P10 but was clipped on the opening lap by Palmer’s Renault which affected the car’s pace. The issue couldn’t be identified or resolved during the race, therefore he was forced to retire on lap 36
• As a result of Hulkenberg’s one-place grid penalty, Valtteri started today’s race from P7 on the supersoft tyre. He moved up to P5 in the early stages of the race, benefitting from his competitors pitting, before dropping back to P7 ahead of Hulkenberg. Following Hulkenberg’s final stop Valtteri was 15 seconds clear of the Force India but with severely worn tyres Valtteri wasn’t able to hold onto the position and fell to P9, ahead of Perez, in the closing stages of the race
• Both drivers retain their positon in the Drivers’ Championships with Valtteri in seventh and Felipe in ninth, while the team stays fourth in the Constructors’ Championship, 15 points clear of nearest rivals Force India

2016 Formula 1 German Grand Prix, Saturday

30 July 2016
Renault Sport Formula One Team driver Jolyon Palmer entered Q2 for the first time since the season-opening Australian Grand Prix by setting the sixteenth best time for qualifying for the German Grand Prix. German Grand Prix - Hockenheim, 30 July

Kimi Raikkonen: ”Our car was behaving pretty nicely today and I was happy with the handling. My last try in Q3 was a bit more tricky, I was struggling a little bit with the feeling from the tires, but apart from that we had no massive issues. I don’t have much to complain from the behavior of the car, we are just lacking speed overall. We need to put more downforce in the car to go faster. This result is disappointing, finishing fifth and sixth it’s not ideal, but this is what it is right now, and we keep working to improve. Usually the race is our stronger side, but every circuit is different. Tomorrow it’s a new day, we’ll do our own race, you never know what is going to happen. We need to make a good getaway from the start and hopefully take the fight to the guys in front, and then do our best.”

Gutiérrez to Start 11th, Grosjean 20th in German GP

Jul 30, 2016
Haas F1 Team’s preparation for the German Grand Prix got off to an inauspicious start in Saturday’s final practice (FP3) at the Hockenheimring in Baden-Württemberg. Romain Grosjean spun off turn three of the 4.574-kilometer (2.842-mile), 17-turn circuit with nearly 40 minutes still remaining in the session. It was a minor sideways excursion through the grass and Grosjean was able to drive his car back to the garage. But on the way to the garage, Grosjean mentioned something was awry with his gearbox. Upon arrival, the team quickly determined a gearbox change was necessary, which meant an automatic five-place grid penalty for the start of Sunday’s German Grand Prix. Grosjean was credited with just four laps in FP3, none of which were at full speed.
Teammate Esteban Gutiérrez, meanwhile, had a trouble-free FP3. He logged 17 laps with a best time of 1:17.160, good for 13th fastest. Gutiérrez earned the quick time on his 13th lap while riding on a set of Pirelli P Zero Red supersoft tires.

3 grid position penalty for tomorrow’s race
“A very difficult qualifying session. We are struggling here in Hockenheim – we always knew that a power circuit like this one was going to be a challenge for us, as we are not quick enough on the straights. Having said that, I think I put in a very good lap. I feel good in the car and the package is working, but this is the most we could extract from the car today. Tomorrow we will try and fight for more points – of course it won’t be easy but we will surely give it our all and try and finish as high up as possible; it would be good to go on holiday with a few more points in the bag!”

German GP Qualifying

30/07/16
Valtteri Bottas qualified eighth and Felipe Massa 10th for the German Grand Prix
Both cars progressed from Q1 into Q2 after one run each on the supersoft tyre, with Valtteri easily advancing through in P7 and Felipe in P15
Valtteri and Felipe both went out twice in Q2 on new supersofts. The Toro Rosso of Sainz hampered Felipe at Turn 2 on his first run, which forced him to go again. Felipe eventually made it through in P10 on his final lap. Valtteri made it through to Q3 in P5 with a 1:15.490, his fastest time of the day
Setting one timed lap each in Q3, Felipe headed out first onto a clear track, followed by Valtteri who also entered the track with no cars ahead. Valtteri and Felipe crossed the line in P6 and P7, but dropped to P8 and P10 as the remainder of the field finished their flying laps

GERMAN GP – QUALIFYING

30 JULY 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 3rd, 1:14.726 (Practice 3 – P3, 1:15.837)
“In Q3 I knew I had to find some more time and I put a really good lap together in the first run. Then I knew there wasn’t much more for the second run so I probably tried a little bit too hard and made a few mistakes, but in the end it was a nice qualifying. Third is a good place to start. Hopefully we can look at Mercedes tomorrow and have a good battle with them and not focus on what’s happening behind us. The feeling in the team is very good at the moment. In the last three races now both Red Bulls have been in front of Ferrari and it seems like we’re getting a little bit closer to Mercedes. Everyone in the team is happy and it’s nice standing here knowing that I’m in the top three. Tomorrow I think we’ll have a good chance. The long runs yesterday looked a bit better than they did in Budapest so let’s see. I’ll start the race on slightly older tyres because I had to do two laps in Q2, which means they are not as fresh for the start but it’ll be fine. I’ll go hard and hopefully get in front and at least lead some of the race. If I can’t lead the last lap then I’ll try and lead some and be on TV. Whoo!”

GERMAN GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

29 JULY 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN
First Practice Session: 1:16.927, Position: 5, Laps: 29
Second Practice Session: 1:16.456, Position: 4, Laps: 40
“A good start to the day and weekend in general. The first session I was learning the lap with the car, we had a bit of front locking that we will hopefully get rid of tomorrow. The second session was good, definite progress from the first as I continued to learn the track and get used to the car here. Everyone knows this track is quite hard on the tyres so no real surprises there. We are not too far off Mercedes, we are matching Ferrari and the long runs were all pretty positive. We will have to wait and see how some of the rules work, from what I have heard in general it shouldn’t be too bad. I think the radio rules make it nicer for the fans so they can hear what is going on and not just listen to commentary. I think the fastest way around the track is within the track limits so we will try and keep to that. I don’t mind what the other drivers have said about last weekend, I’m happy and confident with my driving and defending, they can talk to me if they want but I don’t feel any pressure from them.”

German Grand Prix - Hockenheim, 29 July

Kimi Raikkonen: ”On Friday it’s always difficult to have a clear idea of where you are, from tomorrow we’ll understand more, but the session today was not too bad. For sure there’s some work to be done to improve, but more or less we are about there. Obviously we want to be in the front, so this evening we are going to focus on fixing some things and improve in certain areas, then I’m sure we’ll be ok.”

German GP Practice

29/07/2016
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We concentrated on aerodynamic testing for most of the morning, focussing on the front wings in particular. We looked at the different specifications of the different front wing packages across the two cars. In the afternoon we concentrated on tyre work. We’re a little bit out of position on low fuel runs. On the high fuel runs it’s slightly better but the field’s a little bit mixed up so it’s very difficult to tell. We’ll have a clearer picture tomorrow, but I think we’ve probably got a bit of work to do tonight. The good thing is that the areas we need to work on are very clear. Weather wise I think it’s going to be a straightforward weekend and if it does rain tomorrow then it shouldn’t be too heavy as far as our forecasts are showing.

Formula 1 German Grand Prix – Practice – Friday

29.07.2016
Weather: sunny/overcast and dry, 23-26°C air, 32-45°C track
The Sauber F1 Team was able to go through the planned programme in both practice sessions ahead of the German Grand Prix. However, it was not a trouble-free day at the Hockenheimring. Felipe Nasr had issues with the driveability and handling of the Sauber C35-Ferrari, whereas Marcus Ericsson had a fuel pump issue at the end of FP2. In FP1 the Sauber F1 Team continued with the aero tests on both Sauber C35-Ferrari. In the afternoon the focus was on race preparation, with short and long runs on soft and supersoft tyres.

“It was good to drive here for the first time with an F1 car – it was obviously quite challenging, but I enjoyed it. The conditions out there today were tricky, especially with the wind that picked-up during this afternoon’s FP2 and there was also a bit less grip on track. We don’t look too bad here, but we still need to keep finding time – I think the others could improve massively for tomorrow and we have to make sure we do the same. It’s very competitive out there and the long straights don’t make it easy for us, but this doesn’t mean we won’t stop working on it! I’m feeling positive and I look forward to the rest of the weekend.”

24 July 2016
Renault Sport Formula One Team driver Jolyon Palmer was a half-spin away from his first Formula 1 points as both he and Kevin Magnussen moved up the order in a hot and fast-paced Hungarian Grand Prix. Jolyon was running comfortably in P10 with strong pace relative to those around him when the rear of his R.S.16 stepped out at turn four. Despite catching the spin Jolyon was unable to recover the resultant lost positions. Nevertheless, he still finished P12 in a race he described as his ‘best-ever’. Kevin finished in P15 after starting from P19.

Hungarian Grand Prix - Hungaroring, 24 July

Maurizio Arrivabene: ”Today we saw a great reaction from the whole team. Once again, we were able to show that we never give up. Our drivers did an outstanding race really giving their best and, if Seb could have benefited from a better starting position, the final result would surely have been different. As for Kimi, he showed that he fully deserved his contract to be extended into next year. Having said that, when you don’t reach the podium you can’t be satisfied, and indeed we aren’t: but this does not mean that we are not ready to take the fight to the end.”

HUNGARIAN GP – RACE

24 JULY 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: 3rd
“I’m really pleased with a podium today, I don’t think we could have got a win. We tried at the start; we had a good run off the line and at the apex the Mercs were in my blind spot, so I thought I was in the lead, but on the exit I was done by Lewis (Hamilton) and then Nico (Rosberg) got me round the outside of Turn Two. I think even if we had got the lead, their pace was good so they could have even over-cut us if they stayed out an extra lap. Third was the best we could do and Seb (Vettel) got really close in the last three laps; my tyres were getting towards the end, so coming over the line in third was good. Three podiums in a row here is great, it’s a good place for me. I feel really good. Fridays and Saturdays have been really good for us from the start of the season but the last few Sundays, for whatever reason, I haven’t been that satisfied with, so it was important to put it together from Friday to Sunday this weekend and I believe I did that. And now we’ve got another in seven days, so that’s another chance to be happy again!”

“A solid race from us today here in Budapest, I’m satisfied with the result. I’m pretty pleased with the race, even if Fernando Alonso got past us at the start. We were able to keep up with McLaren’s pace, something that during the practice sessions on Friday and Saturday didn’t look like we’d be able to do… It was just impossible to overtake him! If you would have told me I’d finish P8 after the bad start to the weekend that we had, I wouldn’t have believed it! I think we can be very happy and pleased with ourselves – the team did a great job to turn things around and I’d like to thank them for this! We can now go to Germany feeling confident.”

Q1 was initially delayed by twenty minutes following a heavy downpour, then continued to be interrupted by further rain and red flags. Kimi Raikkonen: ”I’m disappointed by the result of this qualifying, it’s really a shame because our car has been working well all weekend and even in wet conditions the handling was very good. For sure we are far from where we should be. At the end of Q2 I went out for my last attempt and I did a decent lap, at least for that moment, but the conditions were improving every lap, the track was getting faster and unfortunately we did not make it through Q3. Whatever the reason, when the conditions are like today it’s not easy. We tried to do the right things, unfortunately we will pay a price tomorrow, it will be difficult to overtake starting from the back but we won’t give up. We’ll do our best, the speed is there and I’m sure we can make something out.”

DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 3rd, 1:20.280 (Practice 3 – P3, 1:20.726)
“When I saw Fernando had spun in Turn 9, I was furious as I was up on my lap by quite a bit and when I heard Nico’s pole time, then the time was definitely there. How affected him or Lewis were (by the yellow flag), I don’t know, but I think we had better than a 19.9 in us. We don’t get many opportunities to get a pole from Mercedes, but I thought today there was definitely a chance. But, the positives are that we were quick, we had good pace and I was happy with the car. I was happy with it yesterday and I think we found even more speed for today, so hopefully that means good things for tomorrow. It was fun with the changing conditions, I really enjoyed it; let’s say I embraced the conditions from the start. It was crazy, there was aquaplaning, spray, it was really hairy and the adrenalin was flowing. It was drying very fast and we had to adapt and be on it, it was cool.”

“Wow, what a qualifying session, and what a result… I feel so good! If I say the truth, this morning we thought we wouldn’t even make it into Q3 after seeing our pace in FP3 but suddenly in Quali everything turned around. I felt much more comfortable in the car and surely the rain and cooler conditions helped. It was probably the toughest qualifying session of my career – to judge each time what tyre to choose, which line to take, see where it was dry and where it was still wet, to cool the tyres, then heat them… It was very, very tricky! But we were in the right place at the right moment every time, we got through every Quali session and we ended up in a great position for tomorrow! I just hope that in the race we can maintain the good feeling we found today in Quali.”

Formula 1 Hungarian Grand Prix – Qualifying – Saturday

Weather: FP3: sunny/overcast and dry, 26-27°C air, 42-48°C track;
Qualifying: rainy/overcast/sunny and wet/damp/dry, 21-26°C air, 25-34°C track

The Sauber F1 Team finished an exciting qualifying ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix in P16 (Felipe Nasr) and P20 (Marcus Ericsson). Due to heavy rain, the qualifying was delayed (14:20 hrs, CEST) and had to be interrupted four times in Q1 because of the difficult conditions. Felipe Nasr put in a good performance, especially in the wet conditions in Q1. Marcus Ericsson made a mistake and hit the barriers. The chassis at his Sauber C35-Ferrari needs to be changed, which means that Ericsson will start the Hungarian Grand Prix from the pit lane.

Hungarian and German Grands Prix Preview

19/07/16
RACE PREVIEW
Hungary
21 - 24 JULY
HUNGARORING
ROUND 11 OF 21
When making a mid-summer trip to the Hungaroring you can expect to endure temperatures in the mid-30s. For a driver in the cockpit of a Formula One car, this can be in excess of 60 degrees. Combining these conditions with the demanding barrage of corner after corner with very few straights for rest and you have the kind of situation Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa will have to endure during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Although moderately slow in Formula One terms with an average speed over one lap of 120mph, the slippery track conditions result in the circuit being a challenge the drivers relish.

AHEAD OF THE HUNGARIAN & GERMAN GRAND PRIX

Max Verstappen
“Hungaroring is a great track and Budapest is a really cool city. Normally when we arrive it’s pretty warm which is nice. I always enjoy driving there because it’s a small track with a big car so it gives a bit of a go kart feeling, it’s also pretty tough due to all the turns, so you don’t really get a chance to rest and usually end up pretty sweaty in the heat. Sector 2 is my favourite part of the track, it’s all about hitting the apex of one corner right so you are in the right position for the next one. If you get it wrong it’s a big time penalty, so you need to be really focused. [Read More!]

2016 Formula 1 British Grand Prix, Sunday

11 July 2016
Renault Sport Formula One Team’s British Grand Prix came to a frustrating end with a double retirement. Jolyon Palmer and Kevin Magnussen stopped on lap 38 and 50 respectively both with suspected gearbox problems. The mixed track conditions presented scant opportunity for advancement from their P18 and P16 starting positions, with both Jolyon and Kevin caught in traffic before their retirements.

British Grand Prix

Jul 10, 2016
The 50th running of the British Grand Prix at Silverstone Circuit proved treacherous when heavy rain fell just before the start of the 52-lap race around the 5.891-kilometer (3.660-mile), 18-turn track. Whatever strategies teams had in place for their drivers were washed away. In their place were seat-of-the-pants decisions as the track quickly changed from wet to dry.

British Grand Prix

Silverstone Circuit 10 July
Maurizio Arrivabene: “We knew, coming here, that it would not be an easy track for us-but if you want to be on top, there must be no ‘difficult’ ones. This is a circuit which, power unit aside, puts a premium on other factors which we were lacking here. It’s not the first time it happens, but perhaps it was much more apparent this weekend. In these conditions, we opted for a very aggressive strategy, pitting in for Intermediates after the initial Safety Car stint. Unfortunately, this choice did not pay off because of the Virtual Safety Car which came out immediately afterwards. But to be honest, the best we could have done was to gain one position in the race. Our drivers did a solid job, despite being hampered and somewhat frustrated by the technical issues we are aware of. Now we must turn the page, look ahead to Hungary and capitalize on the hard lesson we learned here.”

Formula 1 British Grand Prix – Race – Sunday

10.07.2016

Marcus Ericsson’s heavy accident that happened in FP3 on Saturday still had an influence on the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, as the Swede had to pass another medical check this morning that allowed him to race. After starting the British Grand Prix from the pit lane, an electrical issue on the Sauber C35-Ferrari forced him to retire on lap 12. Felipe Nasr started the race in P21 and finished in P15.

BRITISH GP – RACE

10 JULY 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: 3rd
“I felt like I had great pace today so once the track dried up I just tried to have a go. In the beginning I had a lot of spray so it was hard to see where I was going, especially in the first sector. Once I passed Nico I felt like I was closing on Lewis but then he pitted for slicks. We maybe stayed out one lap too long but in the end the race was great and the car was working really well. I had a great battle again with Nico afterwards but as it dried the Mercedes just had too much speed on the straights. I tried to keep up and there was no pressure from behind so I just concentrated on doing my own race. I had a few moments in Turn 1 which was a bit tricky so I had to be careful there but I hear a few others also struggled. The move on the outside at Becketts was fun, he was finding the inside so I thought let’s try the outside. It was a risky move for sure. The car had the grip and I had the feeling so it worked well. There’s a bit of run off there anyway so I had room if it went wrong. In the end we only finished roughly eight seconds behind so I think that is really positive going forwards and shows we are closing the gap. The fans here were great, I couldn’t believe how loud they were and they really supported me. Understandably they were behind Lewis but they got behind me loads also which was great to see.”

2016 BRITISH GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 10/07/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 8th
“I’m pleased with my race today, it was a decent one. We had a very good first half of the race in the wet and mixed conditions – we were fast, the car felt amazing and at one point I was racing in P6. Unfortunately I made a mistake going into Turn 1 – I’m not very happy about that! From that moment onwards I had to calm myself down and reset my confidence a bit. I kept my head down and to cross the line in P8 is a result we can be happy with, even though it’s a shame that we were not able to beat the Force Indias. Having said that, this is the fifth time we score points in the last six races, so we are definitely going in the right direction and we just need to keep pushing. The next race in Hungary should suit our car well so I’m looking forward to another good fight for points!”

British Grand Prix

10/07/16
Felipe Massa finished 11th and Valtteri Bottas 14th in the British Grand Prix
Valtteri started on wet tyres under safety car conditions, but switched to the intermediates when the safety car was called in. He was one of the first front-runners to switch to the intermediates on lap five, but struggled with the mixed conditions. He spun on lap 10 in the wet and fell to P13, before pitting on lap 16 for the medium compound tyre where he struggled with pace.
Felipe also started the race on wet tyres before stopping on lap six for intermediates. He made the switch to the medium compound tyre on lap 16 but couldn’t make them last until the end of the race and was forced to pit for the soft compound on lap 38. The fresh tyres allowed him to gain a position late on as others around him struggled with degradation.
Both drivers retain their positon in the Drivers’ Championships with Valtteri in seventh and Felipe in ninth, while the team stays fourth in the Constructors’ Championship

BRITISH GP – SILVERSTONE CIRCUIT, 9 JULY

Kimi Raikkonen:
“Fifth and sixth is not what we want, we are not happy with where we finished today, but this is the best we could achieve. We know our limits on this track and where we struggle, the circuit layout and the conditions don’t make it very easy for us and we are a bit stuck with the things we can do. This afternoon the car felt the best it has been in the whole weekend, but obviously we were not fast enough. In Q2 I made it very difficult for myself, I spun at the start of my run with the first new set, and then locked the front wheel on the next one. At my last attempt I was able to make it through to Q3, but these things shouldn’t happen. Race conditions are always different and can change a lot here, usually we are stronger in the race and hopefully tomorrow will be the same. We’ll try to make a good start, make the tires work and take the right decisions”.

Haas F1 Team to Start from Row 7 in British Grand Prix

Jul 9, 2016
Prior to qualifying for the British Grand Prix, teams had one final practice (FP3) to prepare for Sunday’s 52-lap race around the 5.891-kilometer (3.660-mile), 18-turn Silverstone Circuit. The 60-minute session on Saturday ran under cloudy skies with an occasional rain sprinkle. This meant Pirelli Cinturato Green intermediate tires were used at the start for teams’ installation laps.
After a little more than 20 minutes, the track dried out enough for slicks. Haas F1 Team drivers Esteban Gutiérrez and Romain Grosjean employed the same tire strategy – a stint on Pirelli P Zero White mediums and a final run on P Zero Yellow softs. It was on the soft tires where both drivers set their fastest laps – a 1:32.895 for Gutiérrez on his 10th lap and a 1:33.344 for Grosjean on his 11th lap to place them 11th and 13th fastest, respectively. Gutiérrez totaled 12 laps and Grosjean amassed 13 laps.

“I’d love to see two McLaren-Hondas in the points tomorrow”
Silverstone, Saturday July 9
A day of mixed fortunes for the McLaren-Honda team in front of a packed house at Silverstone.
Fernando Alonso had a straightforward session, climbing through into Q3 – the fifth time this year that the team has qualified a car inside the top 10. JULY 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 3rd, 1:30.313 (Practice 3 – P4, 1:31.561)
“I think the whole weekend we have been pretty strong and that resulted in a really good Qualifying, the best of my F1 career to date and definitely the best we could do today. Sometimes I have been very unlucky in Qualifying but today has gone well and I was able to show my potential. From now on I will just focus on that and try to keep it up. I’m not focussing on trying to beat my team mate, the points come from the race so that is the important part for me. Silverstone is a great track and I always enjoy driving here. Going through Maggots and Becketts the car is fantastic, no oversteer, no understeer; it feels so nice going through those corners. The car has been performing brilliantly all weekend so I’m looking forward to the race. Hopefully we can maintain this position, it will be important to try and keep up and also keep fighting behind. If it rains we could be a lot closer to Mercedes but if not then we’ll try to just keep position and we will be very happy with that.”

BRITISH GRAND PRIX

Silverstone, 8 July –The two Ferraris were fourth and sixth fastest come the end of the first free practice session for the British Grand Prix. This historic round of the calendar is in its 67th year. Strong winds kept the rain away from the track, so the session was run entirely in the dry. The programme involved the usual work to find the set-up best suited to the track, as well as trying some new aerodynamic components. Sebastian Vettel started out on the Hard tyres, before switching to the Softs on his SF16-H. For his installation lap his car was fitted with an updated version of the Halo prototype – the tubular structure designed to improve driver head protection in the cockpit – which had already been tried by Kimi Raikkonen at the Barcelona track during the second winter test. The Finn was sixth fastest in 1.33.039, starting his day on Medium tyres before switching to the Softs, while Vettel did a 1.32.501. Fastest was the Mercedes duo of Lewis Hamilton (1.31.654) and Nico Rosberg (1.31.687.)

2016 British Grand Prix – free practice

“Smooth progress in both sessions”
Silverstone, Friday July 8
Strong winds made progress difficult during the first day of practice for Sunday’s British Grand Prix. The weather became gusty during the afternoon session, with both Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso reporting that it was difficult to balance their cars due to the winds.
Jenson had a minor engine data issue in FP2 – it halted set-up progress while his engineers and mechanics worked to identify the problem, but, once he’d fitted the Option tyre at the end of the session, he was able to record some useful lap-times. [Read More!]

British GP Practice

08/07/2016
Objectives: Aero evaluations, set-up and tyre work.

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We’ve been focusing on three areas today. Testing the new aerodynamic parts on the car has been the priority. We’ve got the new front wing here, so we’re ensuring we’ve done our due diligence to evaluate it. We’ve also been testing various different set-up options across the cars, in terms of mechanical and aerodynamic set-up. We’ve been tyre testing, running the soft and the medium compounds. It's not that clear cut yet as we saw different teams doing a variety of programmes. At this stage, the medium compound looks a little bit difficult to manage for us and some of the other front-runners. We need to try and understand that. The pace is definitely in the car, we just have a lot of work to do tonight to ensure we can unlock it tomorrow.

“I’d say this has been our toughest Friday so far this season… We all expected a bit more performance wise. It’s been a very tricky day because of the wind and track conditions, so we definitely have a bit of work to do overnight in order to overcome these difficulties. We aren’t where we wanted to be, but this doesn’t mean that we can’t turn things around and be on top of it tomorrow – I’m confident we can make this happen!”

BRITISH GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

8 JULY 2016

DANIEL RICCIARDO
First Practice Session: 1:32.773, Position: 5, Laps: 30
Second Practice Session: 1:32.051, Position: 2, Laps: 30
“Generally today was really good. It’s always hard to know where the others are but I think we’re pretty happy and the longer runs seemed to be a bit more competitive so we’re getting there. Not a bad Friday. We look fairly good compared to Lewis at the moment but I feel they’ll have a bit more at their disposal tomorrow. I especially wanted to get on top of the race runs today and understand it a bit better, as that was a weakness last week in Austria. I think we’re doing alright. Sunday could be a really good fight with Ferrari for a podium. Hopefully we can make those tyres last a bit longer and get up there.”

RACE PREVIEW
8 – 10 JULY
SILVERSTONE
ROUND 10 OF 21
‘The home of British motorsport’ is naturally a treasured place in Williams’ heart, and not only because the team won both its first and 100th grands prix at the circuit. The track consists of long, sweeping corners and fast straights, making it one of the quickest laps on the calendar. The race at Silverstone is the joint oldest consecutively staged grand prix along with Monza, and is a race Williams has won 10 times, including four consecutive years from 1991-94. Williams was once again on the podium with Valtteri Bottas in 2014. [Read More!]

2016 AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 03/07/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 8th
“I’m very pleased with my race today, especially because we didn’t have an easy one! We started from the back and did a good start, managing to get into the top 10 in the early stages of the race. Suddenly, after the second pit-stop during the Safety Car period, we were nearly last… Which meant we had to do a very good last stint on the Soft tyres – 35 laps – overtaking lots of cars and managing to get back into the top eight, something a bit unexpected after seeing myself back in P15 with half the race to go. After a tough Saturday, I’m happy to finish the weekend with a good result as we’ve worked very hard for this – now we just need to make sure we have better Saturdays in order to start races further up the grid and fight for more points. I’m confident we can do it and I look forward to next week’s race weekend in Silverstone – my favorite track together with Spa – where we will keep pushing!”

AUSTRIAN GP – RACE

3 JULY 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 2nd, Start Position: 8th
“It’s a great feeling to get the second Formula 1 podium of my career. For sure that was a good race today, the car was performing well, as were the tyres. I managed to overtake some cars at the start and had some good battles so that was really good fun. From there on I did my own race, Kimi was catching fast but I managed to hold him off until the end. I expected P3 but got the P2, I was surprised but very happy to pick up another position in the last lap. The safety car definitely helped us today and allowed us to make the most of the pit stops. Towards the end we had to deal with the pressure but that just means you can’t make any mistakes, and we didn’t today. I hit some traffic which cooled the tyres and made it a bit tricky but we finished with no problems. We are working hard for this season and picking up podiums so it’s definitely positive looking at 2017, and looking at Silverstone next week it should be good, the car usually performs better there than here so that is another positive after a good day today.”

Gutiérrez to Start 11th, Grosjean 13th in Austrian Grand Prix

Jul 2, 2016
Prior to qualifying, teams had one final practice (FP3) on the 4.326-kilometer (2.688-mile) nine-turn Red Bull Ring to prepare for Sunday’s Austrian Grand Prix in Spielberg. It was a productive effort for Haas F1 Team, as both Romain Grosjean and Esteban Gutiérrez logged significant laps during the hour-long session under a partly cloudy sky and warm temperatures.
Gutiérrez turned 22 laps with a best time of 1:08.475 to place him 12th quickest. Grosjean ran 21 laps with a best time of 1:08.550 to earn the 14th fastest spot. Both drivers shared the same tire strategy. They used the Pirelli P Zero Yellow soft tire for their installation laps and then switched to the P Zero Red supersoft tire for their first timed stints before completing the session on the P Zero Purple ultrasoft tire. It was on the Red supersofts that Gutiérrez and Grosjean set their fastest laps.

AUSTRIAN GP – QUALIFYING

2 JULY 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 7th*, 1:09.980 (Practice 3 – P4 1:07.639)
"It was quite fun coming into Q3 knowing that it was going to be wet and I like it when you have to adapt quite quickly. We got out on the intermediates and started with a pretty good pace and I was happy, but I knew it was going to dry by the end of the session and the slick tyres were going to be better. In hindsight I would have liked to have come in a bit earlier and at least had two laps on the slick tyre so that’s probably where we missed out in getting those extra few positions. I think I’ll start fifth now from some of the penalties, which is alright and we did well in Q2. We got through on the super softs so that hopefully pays dividends tomorrow and we can be closer to our rivals.”

AUSTRIAN GRAND PRIX – SPIELBERG CIRCUIT, 2 JULY

Kimi Raikkonen: ”Today a lot of things happened. In Q3 the rain came, but by the end of the session the track was drying up, so it was difficult to know if it was ready for dry or wet tires. When the conditions got a bit tricky, we did not get it right because of many little things and did not manage to put a good lap together when it mattered. It is a bit disappointing to finish sixth, I felt there was more to come, but with the guys in front being penalized it’s not too bad. The car has been handling well all weekend, in dry and wet conditions and we had the speed, so I expect it will be ok. Tomorrow it will be a difficult day for everybody, the conditions will dictate a lot how long the tires will last, it will be a key point. We’ll try to do a lot better than today”.

Unfortunately I was only able to do 10 laps before having to stop… For sure we could’ve qualified higher today and I’m disappointed with the result. 2016 Austrian Grand Prix – qualifying

“We start from P3 tomorrow, which is mega!”

Zeltweg, Saturday July 2
Jenson Button will start tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix from third position after he and the team brilliantly judged drying conditions to nail a competitive time in the dying seconds of Q3.

As the rains fell during qualifying, Jenson was the last driver to switch from Intermediates to Options and, subsequently, the last to cross the line as the track dried. He set the fifth-fastest time, but was elevated to third by virtue of the five-place penalties given to Nico Rosberg and Sebastian Vettel. It was a perfectly managed session from the driver, engineers, strategists and mechanics.

Fernando Alonso was extremely unlucky in Q2. He set his first timed lap on used Options, then, after fitting fresh rubber for the second run, encountered yellow flags at Turn Three after Jenson locked up, went wide and ran into the gravel. Without an opportunity to better his earlier time, he will line up 14th.
