ABU DHABI GP - RACE

27 NOVEMBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 4th, Start Position: 6th
“I am very pleased with my result and how that race went. After being last after turn 1, having to fight my way back and doing it all on a one-stop was the best we could do and I am happy we pulled it off. I knew I was going to come under attack from the two-stop guys as they obviously had more life left in the tyres, I don’t think I could have held Seb off at the end. When you still finish in front of guys who did an extra stop you have to be pleased with the result, especially as we also finished so close to P1. It was an unfortunate tap at the start which caused the spin, it was just a racing incident though and these things happen. I think Lewis was trying to back us up, and I probably would have done the same, you have to try these things to win a championship. It is very nice to finish the season fifth in the championship and to have had some really good results along the way. After yesterday I wasn’t too happy, so now we finish it on a high. It has been a special season for me this year and I am really excited to get next year underway and hopefully bring more success.”

2016 ABU DHABI GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 27/11/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Retired
“I think it was a positive race up until the accident: I was racing in P14 after staring from P21, overtaking the Manors, Saubers and Renaults… So it was being a good, clean race, but it’s just a big shame that Palmer hit me from behind! I was really enjoying myself and I’m also happy with the fact that we managed to recover well after what’s been a very challenging weekend. It’s just a pity that we were not able to finish the season seeing the checkered flag, but it’s been an amazing 2016 and I’m very happy and proud of my season overall. I take home 46 points, a number I would’ve never said at the start of the year! So I think we can all be very pleased. I’m now very much looking forward to 2017! I’d like to thank the whole team for all the effort and hard work, it’s been an unforgettable year and we couldn’t have done it without each other!”

ABU DHABI GP – QUALIFYING

26 NOVEMBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO, Position: 3rd, 1:39.589 (Practice 3 – P6 1:41.831)
“I’m definitely pleased I got the third place I was after. It feels really good. This morning was hard, I did a run quite early and I was nearly a second off Max so it didn’t look good on paper but the track warmed up so much that we didn’t really know what to expect coming into quali. Q1 was a little bit slow but then I picked it up and Q3 was solid enough so I was happy. We’ll see about the strategy. It’s just nice to do something different to Mercedes. We know on the same equipment they’re probably going to be quicker so we feel it should make us go a little bit longer at the start and then perhaps we can bring the race back to us towards the end when our tyres might be a bit different. For tomorrow of course I wish I was in their position, obviously they’ve both got a little bit more pressure than us this weekend, which I’m kind of envious about. But if the win is there for me tomorrow then I’ll go for it and there will be no holding back. You always have this level of respect as they’re fighting for the title, but if they leave the door open and I think I can pass, then I won’t make it easy for them and let them sail into the sunset.”

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:42.003, pos. 17th
“After all the problems we’ve been struggling with this weekend, today’s result is actually the maximum we could achieve, at least from my side – I don’t think I could’ve done a better lap to be honest. We’ve had very little track time during the practice sessions, so it was difficult to go into qualifying without many laps under my belt… I’m happy with the recovery and we still have a chance to fight tomorrow, when I will try and do a clean race and see where we end up. We’re also going blind into the race, as we didn’t complete any long runs, but we will keep fighting until the end, that’s for sure!” [Read More!]

Abu Dhabi Grand Prix Qualifying

26/11/16
Felipe Massa qualified 10th and Valtteri Bottas 11th for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix
In Q1, both drivers were in the only cars on track running the supersoft tyres. Valtteri went out first for his one and only run and was initially P5, but dropped to P11 as others set their Q1 times. Felipe ran twice; once on the supersoft tyre for P11 and again on the ultrasoft tyres for P9 with a 1:41.771. Both drivers progressed to Q2
In Q2, both drivers completed multiple laps on the ultrasoft tyre and the session ended with Felipe securing P9, whilst Valtteri struggled with grip throughout and was knocked out in P11 as the chequered flag fell. He now has a free tyre choice for tomorrow’s race
Felipe set a single lap on ultrasoft tyres in Q3 of 1:41.213 for a P10 start in his final Formula One race

Sergio Perez VJM09-02
FP1: 1:44.155 (P6) 23 laps
FP2: 1:42.041 (P8) 35 laps

Sergio: “It was a positive day for us. We managed to complete a big programme and we have plenty of information to analyse tonight. Looking at the times, I don’t see any big surprises: we are where we expected to be before the weekend started and we’ve done some good race preparation. The track evolved a lot between the sessions, especially with the temperature drop between FP1 and FP2, but I think we’re nearly there in terms of set-up. I think we have done a good job and I am really looking forward to tomorrow.”

Weather: FP1: dry, 30-32°C air, 34-38°C track; FP2: dry, 27-25°C air, 30-27°C track

The practice sessions ahead of the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix went according to plan for the Sauber F1 Team. As the final race of the season starts at sunset and finishes in the dark, the FP2 session was more crucial in terms of temperatures and track conditions for Sunday as well as for qualifying tomorrow. As usual, the second free practice was mainly about race preparation with short and long-runs on all three tyre compounds: soft, supersoft and ultrasolft tyres. [Read More!]

Abu Dhabi GP Practice

25/11/2016
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: In general, we can be quite happy with today’s running. We ran a complex test programme in FP1, predominantly for next year and this weekend, and have got some really interesting test results, which we’ll be carrying into the winter. FP2 was more concentrated on this weekend’s grand prix; running low and high fuel, both of which looked good. We tried two different set-up directions on the car, which has helped us understand and identify the clearest direction to work on for tomorrow. The high fuel on the ultrasoft tyre looked really good. And on the prime and option tyres we look reasonably competitive so, whilst we have a little bit of work to do on the car set-up and configuration tonight, overall we are looking in pretty good shape.

MAX VERSTAPPEN
First Practice Session: 1:43.297, Position: 3, Laps: 26
Second Practice Session: 1:41.389, Position: 4, Laps: 24
“My last Friday at the track for this season wasn’t bad. We had a few issues with the car today which meant aborting the last run was the sensible thing to do so we can check the car and make sure we are ready to go in the morning. Nothing is broken and there is nothing to worry about, just safe to stop early. The grip is always a bit difficult in the first session here with the temperatures being higher but already you can tell it’s a lot better as the track is cleaner in FP2. The Ultrasoft compound dropped off quite quickly, as you can tell by the short runs on them but the soft seems to be performing well. Ferrari look strong but we are up there also. I had a bit of traffic on my quick lap so I’m confident we are competitive, it should be an exciting qualifying tomorrow. Generally over the season we have improved from Friday to Saturday so I think tomorrow we will be strong.”

RACE PREVIEW
25 – 27 NOVEMBER
YAS MARINA CIRCUIT
ROUND 21 OF 21

It’s just seven years since Abu Dhabi arrived on the calendar with Formula One’s first ever twilight race, yet the Yas Marina circuit has already established itself as a staple of the season. The ultra-modern design stands apart thanks to its unique features, including the LED-lit hotel sprawling over the circuit and tunnelled pit lane exit, as well as joining the likes of Monaco and Singapore in boasting a trackside yacht-filled marina. The long straights and open nature of the circuit promote entertaining racing, and the venue was the scene of celebrations for Williams in 2014 as a double podium for Felipe Massa and Valtteri Bottas secured the team 66 points in the double points system, the most points scored by a team at a single grand prix.

Tough Luck After Promising Weekend in Brazil

Nov 13, 2016
The Brazilian Grand Prix Sunday at the Autódromo José Carlos Pace in the Interlagos district of São Paulo got off to an inauspicious start for Haas F1 Team. In wet and dreary conditions, Romain Grosjean’s day quickly became even drearier when he spun his Haas VF-16 on the reconnaissance lap en route to the grid.
Grosjean backed into the barrier on the run up to the start/finish line and his car suffered substantial left-side damage. With the crew unable to make repairs, Grosjean’s day was over before it even began. He was set to start seventh, equaling his best start of the year (Japan), before misfortune struck.

2016 Brazilian Grand Prix

Brazil, Race, Grand Prix | 13/11/2016
Autódromo José Carlos Pace, Sunday November 13

Fernando Alonso salvaged a single world championship point after a truly chaotic race in Brazil.

The grand prix was dominated by the weather, with a consistent, light rain prompting a start behind the Safety Car for the first seven laps. Thereafter, the race was: run behind the Safety Car (following Marcus Ericsson’s accident), restarted and red-flagged (following Kimi Raikkonen’s heavy crash on the start/finish straight), restarted, and red-flagged for a second time as the rain worsened, run behind the Safety Car once more after Felipe Massa spun and crashed.

BRAZILIAN GP - RACE

13 NOVEMBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: 4th
“I think the word for today is ‘Exciting’. I overtook Nico around the outside of turn 3 which was really fun to do, I just seemed to find a bit more grip out there. I then started chasing Lewis which resulted in me having a massive moment in the final sector, I was really lucky to keep it out of the guard rail. After that scare my pace was still good and I held onto P2. The rears then started to lose grip and I was told Daniel had pitted for Intermediates and was going fast so I followed that plan. For a lap or so it was really good but then more rain came which resulted in no grip in the last sector. There was no way we could carry on so had to pit again for wets. From there on the race was really good fun, plenty of overtakes around the outside because if you stay behind them there’s too much spray, I had to find another line. I just kept my head down and managed to get past quite a few cars in the remaining laps. I could hear the crowd going crazy when my engineer was on the radio, so I’m very thankful for the Brazilian fans for getting behind me. At the end when I crossed the line it felt like a victory, it was almost as beautiful as my race in Barcelona.”

Formula 1 Brazilian Grand Prix – Race – Sunday

13.11.2016
Weather: rainy and wet, 18-19°C air, 20-21°C track

An exciting Brazilian Grand Prix led to an exceptional race for the Sauber F1 Team: the wet race in Interlagos favoured Felipe Nasr – the Brazilian finished in P9 after starting from P21, while handling the difficult track conditions very well. Several safety car phases and two red flags did not confuse the Brazilian on his way to score his first points on home soil. Marcus Ericsson was quite unlucky, as he lost his Sauber C35-Ferrari and hit the barriers on lap 12. After scoring its first points, the Sauber F1 Team is now tenth in the constructors’ championship (2 points).

Brazilian Grand Prix

13/11/16
Valtteri Bottas finished 11th and Felipe Massa retired from the Brazilian Grand Prix
The start was delayed due to heavy rain and a series of safety car periods and two red flags, on laps 21 and 28, broke the race into several segments
Both drivers lost track position when the first red flag penalised their early switch to intermediate tyres
Valtteri contested the points placings for much of the race, and made up two places on the final lap
Felipe was making good progress in the treacherous conditions until he crashed out of his last home grand prix on lap 47, prompting emotional scenes as he was cheered by fans and greeted by teams as he walked back down the pitlane

2016 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX – SUNDAY 13/11/2016

Carlos Sainz (STR11-01, Car 55)
Race: Pos. 6th
“Well, the rain dance definitely worked and what a race that was! I’m super happy! To finish P6 after qualifying P15 yesterday is just amazing. I thought it was too risky to put the intermediates on and I asked the team to leave me out on extremes, and it worked! Today was all about a good strategy with no pit-stops for me and a strong pace with no mistakes. To do it in these difficult conditions just makes it even better. It was so hard to drive out there today – it was very, very difficult to keep the car on track at times! It was really tricky, especially in the aquaplaning areas like Turns 13 and 14 … Particularly during the Safety Car restarts, when you are racing at 300kph and you can’t see absolutely anything, it’s risky! Having said that, I really enjoyed it today, I love the rain – I’ve always been strong in the wet, since I’m a kid in go-karting and today was no exception. We can also be very proud as a team, as we were matching the pace of the top runners in the wet, which means that our car is actually a very good one and that we’ve done an excellent job all weekend – I’d like to congratulate everyone for this! To bring back home another 8 points when we were not expecting many more is great news, I’m over the moon - I have to say that this second half of the season is full of surprises for us and I definitely welcome them!”

Brazilian Grand Prix - São Paulo 12 November

Kimi Raikkonen: “Today everything felt a bit more normal than yesterday and I was happier with the car. Overall it was easier for everybody, the cooler temperatures helped, yesterday the track was very hot. To be honest the feeling in the last lap was not so good, the front was sliding in the first two corners and I struggled a bit in the middle sector to put the lap together. I knew that it was better than the previous one but I thought it wouldn’t be enough because it was not an ideal one; It was good enough to be third and I’m positively surprised. Mercedes was too far but today it worked out pretty well and we can be happy with this result. There is potential in the car, we are getting where we should be. Tomorrow we can only do our best, with weather conditions you never know and things can quickly change.”

2016 Brazilian Grand Prix – qualifying

Brazil, Qualifying | 12/11/2016
Autódromo José Carlos Pace, Saturday November 12

Fernando Alonso will start tomorrow’s Brazilian Grand Prix from 10th position, after posting strong lap-times in all three qualifying sessions on Saturday afternoon. Jenson Button starts 17th after failing to find a satisfactory balance in either FP3 or qualifying.
Jenson was mystified by the lack of pace, but the team will analyse the data overnight in a bid to resolve any outstanding issues.
With rain forecast for tomorrow, there’s still much to play for this weekend.

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:13.071, (Q2) 1:12.726, pos. 14th
“A decent qualifying. I don’t think there was any more we could extract from the car and a P14 is the most we could achieve today. My Q2 lap was quite clean in these tricky conditions – there was a lot of wind and it was hard to find a good balance of the car – and I’m pleased with my job today. I have to say that the track conditions changed a lot from yesterday to today and we therefore had to adapt ourselves and carry on learning during the session, which wasn’t easy. Having said that, it’s always an enjoyable track to drive and every single corner is different to the next one – it’s definitely a circuit with a lot of character! Hopefully tomorrow there will be some rain so that we can have a good race!”

Valtteri Bottas qualified 11th and Felipe Massa 13th for the Brazilian Grand Prix.
Valtteri’s single run in Q1 was enough to progress to Q2 in P9. Felipe ran twice, with his second run on soft tyres sending him through in P8.
Valtteri was P7 after the first run in Q2, but as the field tightened his second run wasn’t enough to progress into Q3, falling short by just a tenth of a second.
Felipe improved on the second lap of his first run of Q2, to sit P8 on the leaderboard. However, as other cars crossed the line, Felipe dropped into the knock-out zone and was unable to improve on his second run after suffering from understeer.

BRAZILIAN GP – QUALIFYING

12 NOVEMBER 2016
MAX VERSTAPPEN, Position: 4th , 1:11.485 (Practice 3 – P5 1:12.077)
“I was just a little disappointed with my last lap, I was expecting someone to jump ahead of me so Kimi being in front wasn’t a big surprise. It was an odd session, Q1 and Q2 felt good but then I wasn’t very happy with the grip of the new set of tyres I got. We need to look into this as the rear felt slick in sector 2, we will analyse and hopefully figure out why. We have ended up very close to third position which realistically is the best we can do in dry conditions so todays result is still pretty good. We have split the Ferraris which means we will have a fun race on our hands tomorrow, especially if the weather changes. It was a bit of a shame the rain stayed away for qualifying. We had a few drops but not enough to make conditions swing in our favour, it is supposed to rain more tomorrow so let’s look forward to that. With some wet track condition our level of grip compared to other cars should come up a bit. Long run pace looks good so after a strong start we can put on a good race. I will go out there tomorrow to perform the best I can and deliver the highest finish position possible for the team. I haven’t paid much attention to the stories of Mercedes talking with Red Bull, Nikki was in our hospitality but he just likes our food and drinks, they are very good. He is Austrian so perhaps just wanted an Austrian drink.”

For the Sauber F1 Team the Saturday ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix could not have been more disappointing: After identifying issues on Marcus Ericsson’s car, the Swede was not able to run a proper lap in FP3. As his Sauber C35-Ferrari’s engine needed to be changed, he was delayed going into Q1. Also Felipe Nasr could not run through his planned programme in FP3, as there were engine issues as well – however, his engine did not have to be changed. BRAZILIAN GP – FRIDAY PRACTICE

11 NOVEMBER 2016
DANIEL RICCIARDO
First Practice Session: 1:12.371, Position: 4, Laps: 27
Second Practice Session: 1:12.828, Position: 5, Laps: 43
“Today it was really hot and you could feel the tyres were having a hard time, and it means we were not as quick as we’d like. On the long run today I didn’t feel we were that strong towards the end of it but I feel that once the track cools it’s going to be completely different. We are a bit closer to Mercedes than we probably expected, and there’s still a bit more to come from the car, but to really have a chance to win then I think we need some rain to help us. The rain would be fun just to change it up a little bit but even if it’s just cooler tomorrow and on Sunday as forecast it will be better on the tyres. Of course we will try and improve what we have done today but I think tomorrow will be another story.”

2016 BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX – FRIDAY 11/11/2016

First Practice Session
Best lap: 1:14.090, pos. 12th, 15 laps
Second Practice Session
Best lap: 1:13.689, pos. 12th, 46 laps
“It was a decent day. Even if we missed a bit of track time this morning, we’ve completed a good amount of laps today, as we were able to catch-up well in FP2. We’ve ticked all the boxes and it therefore was a useful Friday. It will be an interesting race on Sunday because it’s quite hot here as we saw today, but the conditions can quickly change and we will need to be fast reacting to them.”

Brazilian GP Practice

11/11/2016
Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: We are pleasantly surprised at how good our pace was today. We’ve done a lot of set-up and development work in the simulator, and then subsequently on the track here, and the drivers are happy with the results. We knew we had to take a slightly different approach for a track like this, with the low-speed corners, so that’s what we’ve been concentrating on. Both the low and high fuel runs looked good, we could run the soft tyre easily as long as we need to, and it was good on the medium tyre as well. There was a lot of degradation on the high fuel, but the degradation was high today so the aim is to have relatively less than other people. Felipe suffered a flat spot on his long run that knocked his pace back a little bit, but overall we’re in good shape.

The Sauber F1 Team was able to run through the planned programme in both practice sessions ahead of the Brazilian Grand Prix in Interlagos. AHEAD OF THE BRAZILIAN GP

Verstappen
“I like the track in Brazil, it’s a really special layout with quite a bit of height elevation, and it is anti-clockwise which always adds a bit more fun to the challenge. The track is quite a technical layout, especially sector 2, it’s important to get this right for a quick lap. Like many of the circuits we race at it has had a lot of history and great moments over the years, this makes it one of the “special” ones on the calendar.
