MAX VERSTAPPEN, Finish Position: 3rd, Start Position: 3rd
“The whole weekend we were very competitive and in the race, with the tyres we had, I think we maximised our strategy and we were very happy with the result. Every single weekend you go in you try to win and here practice has been good, Qualifying has been positive and the race went well too. Of course we’re very pleased with that and to come away with a podium and challenging for second at the end at this track, which is not ideal for us, is really positive. When you feel confident with the car then you can do a good job, and during the race I think we managed the car in the best way possible on the hypersoft tyres. In this kind of race you have to manage a lot, fuel first of all, then also the tyres, you have the pressure from behind, you don’t want to let them into your DRS but one point I can see that I was pulling away quite comfortably so then I was challenging Valtteri at the end. So the race was in one way maybe a little bit boring but on the other hand you needed full focus on doing a good job. Seb was very fast today and I could quickly feel that we were just lacking top speed. They tyres were holding on really well at the end when I was challenging Valtteri because he was fuel saving which shows our car was working well and for sure we have a very competitive car at the moment. I don’t think we can challenge for victories on every track, it just depends on how long the straights are but for now I am looking forward to the upcoming races.”

The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team back in the points with Charles Leclerc
Weather: sunny and dry, 20-21°C air, 33-42°C track
The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team concluded a positive weekend at the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix with one car, driven by Charles Leclerc, finishing the race in the top-ten and the other in the top 15 with Marcus Ericsson. Both drivers gave a strong performance, and did a good job of managing their tyres on the demanding Circuit Gilles Villeneuve. After qualifying in P13 (Q2) on Saturday, Charles Leclerc drove consistently throughout the race, and moved forward, ultimately finishing in P10 and scoring a further point for the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team. Marcus Ericsson also did a good job, and advanced during the race, finishing in P15, despite having to slow down in the first part of the race because of traffic. The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team currently holds 9th place in the Constructors’ Championship, with Charles Leclerc in P14, and Marcus Ericsson in P17 in the Drivers’ Championship. The team looks forward to the upcoming races with a boost in motivation and confidence after a successful weekend in Montreal.

Sahara Force India scored two points in today’s Canadian Grand Prix with Esteban Ocon racing to ninth place ahead of Sergio Perez in P14.

P9 - ESTEBAN OCON - VJM11-03
Strategy: Used HyperSoft (11 laps) – New SuperSoft (56 laps)

Esteban: “It’s good to pick up more points, but we had the potential to score even more today. I had a fantastic first lap and got ahead of Hulkenberg, which was the target, and I was running well in seventh place. Then we had a small issue at the pit stop, which cost us a couple of seconds, and it dropped me down behind both of the Renaults. From there I tried my best to fight back and I came close to catching Sainz in the final few laps, but it wasn’t possible to overtake, especially after he cut the track and gained some time on the final lap when I was about to overtake him. It’s a shame because the strategy should have worked really well. I will focus on the positives because it’s been a strong performance by the team this weekend. We can be satisfied with what we have done here. The pace has been competitive, but we need to keep pushing.”

Qualifying - Best lap: (Q1) 1:12.587, (Q2) 1.12.635, Pos. 12th
“I was really happy with the job I did today, and how we’ve worked as a team throughout the weekend to get the car in the right place. I think 12th was more or less where we’ve been this weekend, there was probably another tenth in the car on that last lap, but to move much further up the grid and into Q3 was a bit of a tall order today. I’ve really enjoyed driving the track here, it’s got a lot of character, bumps, kerbs, you’re close to the walls… I felt strong all weekend in Monaco as well but Q1 was a bit of a mess and we missed Q2, so it was nice to get a better result in Montreal. I’m quite optimistic for tomorrow! The upgrade performance in qualifying was good, and we think the bigger step is in the race trim which is where we have been struggling recently. Hopefully we can battle it out and try to muscle our way into the top 10 - everything has been really positive so far and we’ve seen races in the past here where a lot can happen, so I’ll keep focussed and do my best to bring home some points.”

The work last night and in final practice really paid off and we took big steps forward in the build-up to qualifying. So I have to say a big ‘thank you’ to the team because we are really making good progress with this car. I think there is all to play for tomorrow: we are often stronger with race pace so the job tomorrow is to try and get ahead of Hulkenberg and bring home some big points.”

“I think we did a really good job today, the car has been performing very well and we made the most of it. In Q3 we were just lacking a little top speed but we were close and I’m happy. We have no issues, the pace was decent and we are not too far behind. The whole weekend I felt very good on the hypersofts which makes me more comfortable to attack the corners and this is always a good combination. The little engine upgrade probably pushed us a bit closer which is always nice to have. This track feels a little like a go-kart track and hitting all the kerbs is good fun. We have been fast all weekend and in the race we are usually faster than in Qualifying. We are starting on a different tyre which will make things interesting in the race but we will see, because many things can happen and if the safety car comes out that can change everything. We can definitely overtake on this track so that will give us many possibilities.”

Weather: FP3: sunny and dry, 20-22°C air, 34-38°C track; Qualifying: sunny and dry, 23-24°C air, 32-44°C track

Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team finished qualifying ahead of the 2018 Canadian Grand Prix with one car (Charles Leclerc, P13) in Q2. This accomplishment marks the fourth consecutive time that the young Monegasque driver has advanced into Q2. The team headed into FP3 with the same car configuration on both cars, and focused fully on qualifying preparation. It was clear to the team that Q2 was possible for either racer. The drivers started the qualifying session well, with both putting in a strong performance. Unfortunately, Marcus Ericsson made contact with the wall during Q1, damaging the front right of the car and having to abort the session before it ended (P19). Charles Leclerc managed to get up to speed and follow the track evolution, advancing into Q2 (P13). The Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 Team looks to tomorrow’s race with confidence following the strong pace shown since the beginning of the weekend.

Seb over the moon after Qualifying, Kimi unsure about what happened

Montreal, June 9 – Every metre counts on this 4.361 Km long circuit where half a tenth of a second can make a lot of difference. Scuderia Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel got the best out of it today and his effort resulted in pole number 217 for the team, the 4th in the season so far. Conversely, a small mistake on his very last run, cost Kimi Raikkonen dear and he had to settle for fifth place when a much better result had looked on the cards. However, the substantial performance improvement that the SF71H has shown since the first day of practice means there’s a lot of potential to be explored in tomorrow’s race.

Seb and Kimi predict further improvement for tomorrow

Montreal, June 8 – A very mixed picture emerged from the first day of practice at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, where Kimi Raikkonen was in second place on the timesheets and Seb Vettel managed fifth best after losing some time in the garage and then being hampered by a red flag and traffic on his fast runs. The Canadian circuit is notorious for featuring strong track evolution as the weekend progresses, so it is not easy to predict what the future holds.

"The car seems competitive here, now we need to deliver the result tomorrow in qualifying"

Circuit Gilles-Villeneuve, Friday 8 June
The team maximised its track time in FP1 – despite a brief red flag stoppage – to complete a productive session, testing various components and conducting a number of set-up changes while also bedding in new power unit upgrades for the first time.

The second session began with a continuation of the morning’s programme, before moving towards longer runs with higher fuel. Stoffel tagged the wall at Turn Nine mid-way through the session, and brought the car to a stop on the track to avoid further damage to the floor. While the incident damaged his right-hand suspension, the team is confident the appropriate repairs can be made before tomorrow’s sessions without any concerns. [Read More!]

Sergio: “I’m happy with the feeling of the car. I got up-to-speed quickly this afternoon and it feels like we have good potential for the weekend. I think there is more speed to come, which hopefully we will find tonight to be ready for qualifying. The track was changing a lot during the session and it should keep improving tomorrow as well. The long run pace was strong and I think we can have a competitive weekend.”

Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering: This morning we concentrated on aerodynamic development in the realms of the front end of the car. We collected lots of important data which will be fed into the development programme and we made some good discoveries. We incurred a bit of damage with drivers pushing to the limits straight away this morning, but this afternoon went smoothly and we collected tyre data on both low and high fuel. We looked more competitive on the high fuel but we have gained an understanding of where we need to improve on low fuel to be more competitive. There is a lot of work to do tonight and we will aim for a clean day tomorrow in preparation for qualifying.

Second Practice Session: 1:12.198 Position: 1, Laps: 39
“Today was a good day, the car is working very well. We did not really change a lot initially and that’s always a good sign and gives you hope. I think we looked quite competitive and it was a positive start to the weekend. Mercedes was very quick, but I think we are not too far away. The tyres worked well, we were quite fast and to see it in the long run, we can be even faster. The car did everything it should do, it started well straight away so I just followed the track. We are still lacking a bit of top speed, but we can make some improvements and tonight we will see what we can do. But so far everything went well and I have a good feeling.”
